Is Essex-speak the British equivalent to Valley Girl?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 12 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No - the essex accent is a lot less posh than the valley girl. I think estuary (sp?) english is more akin to the valley girl idiom.

but it's hard to really make a comparison between accents in a british context and those in an american, as accents are FAR more important in the UK.

Valley Girl Posh? I think of it as trashy, soulless, rootless suburban. What's Estuary? Thames Estuary? North Kent, South Essex?

are they?

crosspost

Posh is not the right word. But the valley girls tend to be moneyed. (unless i totally misunderstand the idea: I'm basing it on the Frank Zappa song)

Estuary English is indeed from the thames estuary. It's a kind of recieved pronunciation mixed down with a touch of mockney. a modern RP.

How much of your expression posh is money and how much is taste? Valley can be rich as hell but it has horrible taste.

I think of Essex as parallel to New Jersey.

Jersey and Valley have a lot in common, when you think of it.

by posh i was meaning moneyed. sloppy wordchoice, for which i apologise...

(and posh has nothing to do with good taste)

two years pass...
Have we had a discussion ever about "The Affect"? I found it particularly pervasive and grating last night.
