sorry, i can't express that enough.
the strip continued for god knows how long (the 80s? the 90s?) and segar died in, i think, the mid 30s.
one of the great, sad stories of comics. segar started off brilliant and did amazing work right up until the lights went out. (in his early 30s, i think.) one of those, coulda been, shoulda beens.

The Popeyes craze was on, fueled by a popular jingle, "Love That Chicken From Popeyes," -- that Dr. John sang.

So, Popeye is seven years younger than Betty White (to the day).

though he should switch to fresh spinach, srsly who tf would eat canned spinach iirc the comics never said he ate tinned spinach - mostly he just referred to it when asked about his indefatigability, or might occasionally be seen eating it off a plateso blame Hollywood for lying to you and misrepresenting this hapless sailor and king (if idrc)

how are the thimble theater comic strips? was just thinking about wimpy today and how much i like the character design of popeye characters. i realized id never read any of the comics, know popeye (other than his general notoriety) primarily from the tv show "popeye and son".

Top ten newspaper strips of all time. Number one at its peak.
(The first few years are merely great, but it's consistently firing on all cylinders by a few years before Popeye's debut. The last year or so get shaky as Segar's health wobbles and ghosts step in.)

of the Popeye-era Thimble Theatre collections are still in print, and absurdly bargain-priced for the large-format hardcovers that they are. The other volumes might be found in small-town second-hand shops for similar costs, or online second-hand for 2-7x that price. But you can jump in with 3 and 4 and pick up who the characters are easily - it's written with the assumptions that readers are dropping in randomly every day.

The Fanta books are wonderful BUT I MUST WARN YOU that each of the six books has a capital letter "P" "O" "E" or "Y" on the spine which, when you but every book spells out POPEYE on the shelf. But if you are OCD and can neither afford/find/desire every volume, you are going to go nuts looking at PO or POPE or POPEY or god help us PPE.
