I think a lot of the isolation the 'public' feels from contemporary art stems from the fact that your average joe isn't going to have complete knowledge of the theoretical (Derrida, feminism or suchlike) blather that informs a lot of contemp. stuff.
That said, though, I do think a lot of art since the early 70's has stiven to isolate itself as a pre-emptive reaction against its own eventual canonization.

contemporary means reflecting the present situation - non?
perhaps we're all a little isolated
sitting in the warm glow of the computer screen - shooting random remarks - waxing our witty repartee
this forum life is great for isolationism... you can have endless open ended conversations and nobody butts in to make you feel inadequate
and you can ramble on and on and - you get the picture
I'm saying go play a sport - but at least take a frikkin walk in the woods and feel the brisk breath of ol mother nature...
