i hope s1ocki sees this....i found a cure for heartburn and acid reflux that works! i have been dogged by it for years and it's been particularly acute for the last 3 months. this "cure" worked for me instantly - it may take a bit longer for you. five minutes after swigging a capful of cider vinegar my heartburn was gone. hopefully for good.
The Secret Ingredient: RAW, LIQUID HONEY – Raw honey in liquid form is really what helps get rid of your heartburn for good. We suggest taking 1 tsp. of raw liquid honey any time you begin to feel discomfort of heartburn or acid reflux. You can also take the honey before bedtime, which will help soothe your esophagus and allow you to heal while you are sleeping.
Honey works fast, and it’s important that you use pure raw honey. (This is the most common type of honey you’ll find at the grocery store – in liquid form… like in those “Honey Bear” plastic bottles, for example). Honey has long been known to fight bacteria, block infection, combat inflammation, reduce pain, and improve circulation. It also stimulates the regrowth of tissue – in fact, there are some people who claim a certain blend of bee powder and honey cures baldness!
8. The Other Secret Ingredient: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV) – Did you know that most acid reflux is actually caused by too LITTLE acid in your stomach? This makes sense when you think about how it works. If your stomach isn’t producing enough acid to digest your food, then more food (and gas) will stay in your stomach for longer periods of time… without getting properly digested. So, since Apple Cider Vinegar is so acidic, it immediately starts digesting the food in your stomach and eases your heartburn very quickly. Please note – some people have reflux because of too much acid. If this is your case, then the Apple Cider Vinegar will probably not help you. If you currently take medications that are acid blockers, you probably have too much acid already. If you don’t know, please consult with your doctor.
How much Apple Cider Vinegar should you use?First of all, it won’t take very much at all. One or two “swigs” should do it (one or two teaspoons). You’ll probably feel a slight burning sensation for maybe 5 seconds, but then it should go away and you’ll notice almost immediate relief. And it should keep you relieved for days at a time.
Another tip is to try and get the best apple cider vinegar you can – we recommend you find some at a health food store, not the cheap Heinz brand found at grocery stores. Some grocery stores will have the good kind – you’ll know it when you see it. The Bragg brand has worked really well, and it usually costs less than US$5.00. But if you don’t find Bragg or another organic APPLE CIDER VINEGAR brand, Heinz should work better than nothing.
Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar together should help you tremendously! We recommend trying just the honey first. If that doesn’t work, try adding some honey to two or three teaspoons of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR in a cup of hot water. If that doesn’t work, try using the APPLE CIDER VINEGAR straight – one swig at a time. The taste of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR isn’t very good, but it should help you get rid of your reflux/heartburn

I totally believe this; I think people get in a vicious cycle with antacids sometimes. But as noted above, ymmv. Similar to introducing more acid with vinegar, I've had good luck with papaya enzyme tablets, you can get them at the health food store.
I've never had too much trouble with heartburn (my husband is never without the tums though) but it's practically unavoidable when you're pregnant, the hormones relax the muscles that keep the stomach acid in the right place so there have been a couple of nights where I've woken up retching into my sinuses. Sexy. Anyway, I found out that wheat really irritates my system, it's the main trigger that I can try to avoid.
Seriously try the papaya tablets though, they're pretty cool.

I gained about ten to fifteen pounds, most of which went to my belly, and started experiencing it regularly for the last few months. excess belly fat can trigger it. but after a 14 day course with a proton pump inhibitor it seems to be gone - should think about that (a la Prilosec OTC or a cheaper generic). for those with recurring problems that is.

FUCK A MOTHERFUCKING FUCKING HEARTBURN.
― Ivana Boob-Reduction (j.lu), Monday, 10 January 2011 05:50 (fifteen years ago)
I'm going to have this until I lose my stomach, tho I did manage to lose 5 pounds last week.
Been taking Gaviscon tho as a change of pace. liquid form. tastes disgusting, but forms a 'barrier' between the esophagus and stomach to prevent acid refluxing int throat.
kinda neat, but my stomach's felt a little queasy since starting on it.
I'm gonna need to make a gastroenterologist appointment soon and get a real script.

have you tried cutting carbs?
― Kerm, Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)
yea I've actually done that a lot in the past week. I dropped 5 pounds without doing any semblance of exercise, so I think merely avoiding my bad habits will help me get down to like 175....I just haven't stuck with it long enough to ever make a dent.
it is hard to get on a decent regimen when your whole life your BMI stays at 22-23 no matter what you eat and in what quantity, and then suddenly at 29, you actually start gaining weight.
― hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
I used to get heartburn and pop antacids pretty regularly, and since mostly cutting cereals and potatoes a year and a half ago it's been a non-issue. I also live off of stuff people say "causes" their heartburn, like coffee, onions, tomatoes... i put srichacha on everything. stick with it. I did it to trim down too and went from 225 to 180 over a couple months.
― Kerm, Sunday, 13 March 2011 23:45 (fifteen years ago)
yea that sounds like a plan. good thing is I really only have to trim 10 pounds or so.
― hold my breathless i wish go dead (San Te), Monday, 14 March 2011 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
I've been on the generic form of Prilosec pretty regularly for a couple of years. My Doc told me I may have to take it for the rest of my life. But I'm going to give it a rest the next few days and see if I can't live without it. Anyone quit taking it cold turkey?
― musicfanatic, Wednesday, 10 August 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
oof, 3-4 days in a row. I've never had it this persistently and I'm not sure the Gaviscon's helping. I have a pretty terrible diet (and yeah, I am way overweight too) but it hasn't changed recently so I don't know what's up.
Also got some muscle aches/pains and am trying not to go "chest pain + arm aches = oh noes" but I am a terrible person for the hypochondria

btw I know lots of people have it worse than I currently do but I dunno, I guess I was just posting in case someone says "if it suddenly lasts for several days out of nowhere you totally need to _____"
― not a player-hater i just hate a lot (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 25 January 2014 18:15 (twelve years ago)
is it stress-related? idk, plenty of water usually the answer to everything but u knew that already and it's not the most fun cure in the world
― John Fitzgerald Chicken (imago), Saturday, 25 January 2014 18:23 (twelve years ago)
hm, I have been stressed lately though no more this week than others lately but Wednesday was pretty hectic and I keep forgetting to get a good night's sleep so yeah, it could well be. also had some TMI gastrointestinal distress on Monday night which is an unnumbered dot I am trying to join to the other dots but may just be a printing error (itt metaphors are stretched past breaking point)
I was drinking lots of water, mainly to wash Gaviscon chalk out of my teeth, but it hurt and I thought it might be washing useful Gaviscon remains off the side of my throat, so I stopped; I'll start again
been meaning to give up the fizzy sugary drinks I have a stupid weakness for and maybe do some kind of elimination diet for other reasons too so I guess this should be a good reminder
