Can I just say something? Thankyou.

I Love Music, and I Love Everything, have been loosely affiliated with Freaky Trigger. The views expressed on ILM and ILE are the authors' own and are in no way to be taken as the views of the editorial staff or collective writers of Freaky Trigger. To make this clearer, I'm severing the formal link between FT and the twin boards (I actually did this for ILM a couple of months ago) - there will still be a link to the boards from NYLPM but the boards are their own entities and should not be thought of as part of Freaky Trigger.

Also, both ILE and ILM are moderated, and the central moderating principle is that both are self-policing communities. In other words, if a member of the community says something unacceptable, it is up to the community, not the moderator, to say this (unless what has been said is defamatory). All requests for thread or post deletion should be addressed to either me or DG.

Apologies to anyone who used the boards to get to FT or the FT front page to get to the boards.

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was it something we said? Because we can change, if that's what you want.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

do you have any plans to sort uncategorized threads on ilm? i understand that using ilm search is an easier method of finding threads but when wasting a sunday afternoon reading old posts i just thought that the uncategorized threads were becoming somewhat massive.

kevin enas, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom

Is this personal , did the il* upset ?

anthonyeaston, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The ILM uncategorized threads are probably impossible to deal with now, sorry. When I started ILM I had no idea things would get as big as they have done and so my categorisations are really frivolous and useless, mostly. If I win the lottery I'll hire a minion to do it.

It's not really up to me to go into the specifics of what caused this - it was action taken after somebody else was offended and linked FT to a comment on one of the fora. The boards and FT have been completely separate in my mind for ages but I realised on thinking about it that this may not be the case for everyone reading it and I wanted to make that clear.

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

needless to say (or perhaps not?), *i* know why this was posted, and frankly, i think it's childish as hell. (more childish, in fact, than the post which prompted it, if that's possible, because it was pretty low on my list, although certainly not the *most* patently ridiculous/offensive thing i've ever said in print or out, which we won't get into.) whether or not i'm a fascist or anti-semite (i think it's pretty damn obv. i'm not, not the least of which being the fact that my sole contribution to freaky trigger was gushing over a gay, jewish disco artist) is frankly beyond the scope of the argument here. the point of fact is that tom is, indeed, correct. that it's not up to dg or tom to delete a thread because its the "right thing to do." the only person to "call me out" on my post was ethan, and, well, let's be frank, he's not exactly mr. sensetivity himself, so i wasn't even sure (until talking to him right now,) that he was even upset. everyone else gleefully went about posting to the thread without commenting on it, leaving one to assume that a. they weren't upset or b. if they were, they declined to mention it to me. (in fact, most people seemed to be more upset that i would be "making fun of the squares" than my rather off-the-cuff joke. i think bill was the only one who actually hit on the fact that a. it IS a fairly childish attitude, which i was trying to suss out via the thread in the first place.) if anyone here crosses the boundaries, i think the other posters are more than free, publically, to call them out on it. lord knows it's happened before and will happen again. but please don't throw a fit in private and not even bother to confront me directly. and don't hurt tom and ft in retalliation. i'm sure tom is just as (if not moreso) embarassed by the statement as i am right now. but i stand by the fact that (as of the time i post this, no reply in the thread, no email to me) slinking about behind the scenes is just whining, rather than making your feelings known to me where some good might come of it. i hope this reply gets back to the person in question, and i hope that - as i obviously offended you - you realize that i'm sorry, indeed. i've tried, in the past on these boards, to offer some words of solace to you in a shared hardship we've both had to face this year. i hope they didn't fall on deaf ears nor would the opportunity for further dialogue be destroyed by this.

(also, if this means jess is to be shunned out fo il*, so be it, but at least tell me i'm a dick to my face.)

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still wuv ILx, I should make that clear too!

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm not considered mr.sensitivity??

ethan, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't want this to turn into a huge fight, to be honest. I think the policy change is a sensible and reasonable one and prevents FT being linked to anything anyone might find offensive. Apologies also for letting a private exchange of e-mail into the open in this way, which is poor netiquette.

So, two final reminders:

1. If you don't like something that somebody has said, take it up with them if you feel you can before alerting a moderator.

2. Do not assume the moderators have read everything quickly, especially at weekends. Even if somebody had posted a full-on incitement to race war, it might very well be Monday before DG or I see it. Generally one or other of us does look at it at weekends but even then we don't necessarily read every thread. In this case I'd not looked at the thread before being alerted to it.

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nor do i. (want this to turn into a fight that is.) so i'm just gonna respectfully ask anyone who wants to talk to me about it to email me or instant message (dubplatestyle) me off forum. it was also my bad form to post to a public thread, but at least i got to explain myself to the lot of you.

feel free to mutate the thread in any other way of course. :)

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and also, in case it wasn't clear, i wasn't addressing tom up thread, nor was he addressing me. there's no animosity between us.

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Looks like most of us ignored the silly remark. Or saw that someone else called the writer on it, thus 'our work is done' feeling. If anyone was a real anti-semite here I think I would have spotted them by now!

Actually while y'all were busy kvetching etc. most of London was at the Lollies launch. Maintenant je suis trés fatiguée. Zzzzzzzz.

I enjoy that muffin raper..he lives in my nightmares

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn you hanley my PARENTS were raped by a muffin!

ethan, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

god bless hanle y.

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarification: I'm keeping the links on NYLPM on the same basis as my links to any other website I enjoy, i.e. on the same basis the rest of you may very well link to them. I'll move them into the sidebar, in other words.

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You shouldn't sacrifice the traffic over something like this. Just stick behind the free speech ideal, and point any offended party to the source of the post. Maybe you could add a little disclaimer link at the top the two boards, thats what a lot of the bigger sites do that have relatively unmoderated boards.

Any board that can weather 9/11 like we did, shouldn't have to change over one stupid slur.

bnw, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The first time I read ethan's post, I thought he said his pants were raped by a muffin. Which would have been weird. My pants have been soiled by coffee however.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

great, we have a coffee hater on the board now - that's it, blame coffee for all yr problems.
