Did you know from the top of the Prudential Insurance Building in Bromley you can see 8 continents?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my grandfather was part of the division which liberated dachau in ww2. also in his unit at one time: charles schulz (!) just learned whilst watching the eagles game with him.

(and completely unrelated to earlier threads, although i have to say that learning this makes me more proud of a man i already had great admiration for than i thought possible.)

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My neighbour invented medical ultrasound and the Teasmade.

suzy, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My uncle, Peter Lyons, was the army general who started off the assault course in each episode of "The Krypton Factor".

Chris Lyons, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In college at NYU, Rick Rubin asked me to try out as vocalist for his band Hose. He saw me in a kangol hat one day and thought I was a happening fag. I never auditioned, because I thought they were a lame Flipper tribute band and I was a chickenshit. And then they turned into a really good Flipper tribute band. I coulda been somebody!

Arthur, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy, at this point tidbits about your neighbors are not admissable for questions of this sort.

Josh, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Might I just commend Anthony for starting this while Pete is in Sri Lanka? Thanks.

Tom, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is that where the Barnet Ape is? I had missed his presence.

Ignoring Josh's impositions ;-) -- Admiral James Stockdale, Ross Perot's running mate in 1992, lived across the street from us in Coronado and was and is a family friend of long-standing. I should say he really *did* have problems with his hearing aid the night of the VP debate, dammit! Stop making fun of him!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My grandfather as well helped liberted dachau

anthony, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Impositions are only for Suzy, Ned. Enjoy your Admiral Stockdale story.

Josh, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to go to school across the street from Micheal Jackson's 'Neverland' ranch. He invited the entire kindergarden class over to play on his narrow gague railroad/ferris wheel/free video game arcade. Once I saw Micheal in person. He was wearing a white fedora and wraparound shades.

turner, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Melanie Chisholm is my sister.

(NB This only happened in a particularly vivid and othewise very very mundane (ie believeable) dream, but it's the best I can do)

Graham, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

really anthony? how odd (in a neat way of course.) i have to say that it shocked the hell outta me, as i had never heard about it in 23 yrs. of war stories. but, in retrospect, these were mostly lighthearted tales of young soldiers on leave, etc. rarely anything "heavy" (and i suppose you don't get much heavier than that.)

jess, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He ran transport during the war , taking supplies to the front and then bringing the dead and nearly dead back to england . He didnt talk much about the war ( yr right mostly stories of drunken leave and pretty girls )but one thanksgiving over apple pie he went blank and told the whole story in horrfying detail

anthonyeaston, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you are more likely to be injured by your fridge than you are to win the lotto.

Geoff, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my old man flew a fake zero in that old pearl harbour film 'tora tora tora'

he joked that they had him cellotape his eyes into slants for the cameras - what a kidder

you will forget me, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh, you're not the boss of me so THERE. The only people even marginally allowed to tell me what I write pay good money for the privilege, okay?

I discovered on Friday it is possible to make a surrealist smut joke using french fries, tortilla chips, ketchup, and two teaspoons.

suzy, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whales are ungulates

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really want to tell you something fascinating...but I'm stumped. I shall try again later.

james, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me and my dad have won a place on one of the antique cars competing in this year's London to Brighton vintage car rally. About ten thousand people entered the competition. It's this Sunday and I can't wait. There's about 450 cars in the race and the youngest car is 97 years old. I hope we win it!

Trevor, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Did you know from the top of the Prudential Insurance Building in Bromley you can see 8 continents?"

That's nothing Mitch. From the old people's home just round the corner from me, you can see IN continents!

Trevor, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Suzy, I used to know the son of the guy who invented sonar - I wonder if he knew your neighbour?
