Minnesota/Minnesotans C or D

I am sick of the Sheep Fuxors or whatever thread. Lets talk about Minnesota. Is it just Canada-south? Are we actually nice? Why do I need to have 12 feet of personal space? Things of this nature.

From the musical taste as superiority thread in ilm (hope the people I quoted don't mind):

i have a natural impulse i think not to offend (and also to feel really self conscious)
-- M@tt He1geson

I think this is the MN Manifesto.
-- VengaDan Perry

It's true. Or maybe it's just me. I don't know.

(ps I'd like to apologize for starting this thread)

Does Canada have a Mall Of The Canadas?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Wellstone was from Minnesota - automatically classic. (Even deducting points for Jesse Ventura.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they have a bigger mall than the Mall of America (MOA). But I have to pay more for my weed I betcha.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It could have a Mall of the Americas, everything from Alaska and Newfoundland to Tierra dl Fuego being in the Americas

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Wellstone was a good guy and very principled. I agreed w/almost none of his ideology, but I was planning on voting for him because I knew he'd rip into the War on Iraq. Conscience of a Liberal was a good read too.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

At the West Edmonton Mall, in Edmonton, Alberta, there is a small plaque near the front entrance that reads: "Fuck Minnesota"

Huck, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats mean.

All the hippies at my school that dream of moving to Canada will be saddened by this information.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, that's great Huck.
It's really strange, the things that people have been mentioning: trying not to offend, being really self-conscious, needing a huge amount of personal space, are things that I personally very strongly identify with, but when I walk around every day and look at other Minnesotans in the street I see none of this in anyone else. I seriously doubt that I look as outgoing to all of them as they do to me (at the one MinneapolisFAP I attended I was gently chided for putting my hood up all the time, I wonder if they knew it was cause I was really self-conscious), so what's going on?

Music = lots of classicness
Sven and Ole jokes = total dud.
Prarie Home Companion = total dud.
Lake Minnetonka/Edina/North Oaks/etc = dud.
endless surbubs = dud.
liquor store closed on sunday/no alcohol sold in grocery stores = dud.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince, Dylan, and The Replacements? So classic.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic for these reasons:
my people
Carleton College
Southdale, the birthplace of postmodernism.
City Pages
The Vietnamese and Mexican food
Walker Art Center
First Avenue
Skyways
All the lakes in Mpls. except for Nokomis
North of the river/south of the river divide, just like London, only diff is that if you are female and living in Shakopee etc. you still style your hair with THE CLAW.
If nuclear bombs rain down on Edina, leave the Convention Grill the fuck alone.
Hating Edina with especial force is just what you do when you are from St. Louis Park, especially if you are Jewish. The Coen Bros. are also from St.Louis Park, and they make digs on Edina in Fargo.
Lake Minnetonka is gorgeous though a bit West Egg. According to my grandmother, those great big mansions were merely the 'lake homes' of yer Pillsburys etc.
Excelsior is pretty classic, the friendliest town on the lake. My dad spent his childhood in Excelsior, where the amusement park was until 1976. My uncle used to be in charge of running the fireworks there.
Blount, my aunt and uncle live *on* Lake Minnetonka and have this beautiful chrome/wood early '60s speedboat which they ride to brunch in Wayzata, passing stoner party islands used by my cousin and the H*U*G*E mansion occupied by my aunt's grandparents back in the day. It took about five minutes to pass the house and grounds and a lot longer for my aunt to shut up about that house.
Summit Avenue in St Paul (where my dad spent the rest of his childhood)
Ragstock
Byerly's (where me and friends played Mink Coats v. Squirt Guns)
Minnesota State Fair and snack opportunities therein

Dud:
Snow
St. Olaf College
Lutherans (aka 'lobotomy for religious reasons')
Mosquitoes AND midges (gnats) in summer
Knowing how to use jumper cables and snow-shovels
Racism towards Viets, especially Hmongs, and Mexicans and Somalis
The NW suburbs: Blaine, Brooklyn Park, Robbinsdale
Morbidly obese Minnesotans at State Fair in their thousands

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think that Prairie Home Companion was pretty carp, too, until I gave the music a good listen.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud: Minnesota Vikings, lutefisk, Ole and Sven jokes, slowly dying old mining towns up in the Iron Range

Classic: Low, the Cows, Duluth, Ironworld, the International Wolf Center, the World's Largest Hockey Stick

http://www.wlra.us/wl/th/wlhstick1.jpg

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bruins could have used that stick last night. How much is the rental next April/May?

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Daria, do not diss the Vikings. Mike Tice is my sister's lovely friend and a classic.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

If Paul Bunyan showed up in Boston with the world's largest hockey stick that would be, like, wicked awesome.

As for the Vikings, I just like making fun of my dad's team as they choke in the playoffs year after year.. oh jeez, ya know dey won't win da Sooper Bowl so why not root for de Packers der. It would be cool if they did pull it out, but I tend to be pessimistic.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Vikings. It's like they feel that winning a title would be too much like showing off.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't around when he played of course, but when I went through a phase of reading up on football history I always thought it was such a damn shame that Fran Tarkenton never won one.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was! My doctor's son was Jeff Wright and played with him as a linebacker, I think.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Wellstone was a good guy and very principled

Except for when he pledged to only serve one term. But Wellstone is classic for that campaign bus.

Classic:
Hating all those cake-eaters in Edina
Hating the Bears
Hating the Packers
Lord Fletchers (hey, my aunt & uncle live on Minnetonka, too...and so did I 30 years ago)
Uptown
The Replacements
Prince
St. Paul
10,000 lakes
Boundary Waters
CP & the Strib (except for CJ)
that free zoo in that park that I can't remember the name of

Dud:
8 months of winter
mosquitos
SPAM
1am last call

don atwater weiner, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Hating all those cake-eaters in Edina means that when your team full of Jewish math geeks and Lutheran human beer kegs beats them at football, chocolate cupcakes are served free to all students and the big cheer at pep rallies is OFF WITH THEIR HEADS.

This is also the gateway into teaching the French Revolution in St. Louis Park. Believe.

Lake Minnetonka must have a ley-line that acts exclusively as a preppy magnet.

Minnesota is a great place to grow up, but people like me need bigger cities than Minneapolis.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to mention broomball and snowmobiles, which are at least as classic as high point beer.

The problem with Minneapolis is the same with most large modern cities--there's not much density to it. It's all sprawl. Which is also part of its charm.

don atwater weiner, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Twin Cities is a FANTASTIC place to grow up, even if you do get stuck out in the woods off a dirt road (which was still kind of classic because it was only 40 minutes outside of downton St. Paul).

Also, SPAM IS CLASSIC.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC:

-Lots of friends there
-Had some good gigs, at the Times and Cabooze and whatnot
-Lots of cool restaurants, and I love going to Maria's or Triple Rock for breakfast
-Halal markets that sell camel meat
-That Sun Ray sign on the way into St. Paul that's had the 'y' out for years, so it says "SUN RA"
-Happy Apple

DUD:

-Asshole drivers, for real
-I can't stand finding my way around Mpls, I've gotten lost there more than anywhere else and (partly as a result of being lost and stressed) gotten in my only car accident, which is still causing me financial trouble
-Driving from Wisconsin to Minnesota is most mind-numbing drive imaginable, and it's just long enough to feel really long but too short to settle into 'driving all day' mode.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a pair of flip-flops at that mall in Edina.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend got married in Edina. It was seemed okay. Flyte Tyme Studios is there, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince, Dylan, and The Replacements? So classic.

You forgot MATOS. KCLASSIC.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Edina used to have a shop where you could buy Bermuda bag covers and 'duck shoes' called McMuffees. The town itself is named after Edinburgh (Edina is the Latin name) and even has its very own Morningside. It is the land of the DAR soccer/hockey mom. I'll check on where Flyte Tyme is but let's just say...highly unlikely, more likely to be Eden Prairie.

Minneapolis road rage is among the most passive-aggressive in the world.

I miss Dayton's, the Lincoln Del, and Excelsior Amusement Park.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I should clarify that these are the only places I've been in Minnesota:

First Avenue/7th Street Entry
some restaurant a couple blocks away
some hotel (maybe it was by the airport?)
the mall in Edina
a gas station somewhere between Minneapolis and Moorhead
a Target somewhere between Minneapolis and Moorhead
a dumpy bar in Moorhead
some restaurant that kinda sucked in Moorhead
a Days Inn in Moorhead (we snuck into the pool later that night)
a Chinese buffet place in Moorhead
yet another gas station

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see more of the state.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Flyte Tyme's website says its in Edina.

Also, Husker Du.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you pretty much covered everything between Minneapolis and Moorhead (as well as Moorhead) so you can check that off the list.

pholm, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

But if you ever have to make the drive again tune into St. Cloud State's radio station KVSC (88.1 FM and kvsc.org streams it online). Probably the best college station in the state and on a good day you can get it almost as far west as Alexandria on I-94.

I have yet to see one mention of MST3K here. I am disappointed in you all.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Don that zoo you're thinking of is the Como Zoo; I live a couple miles away from it and it is great. Also, in a lot of places (maybe it's just in Minneapolis? I don't know) the bars are now open until 2am. As if I ever go out.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

One bad thing about Como is that it's a zoo in the old-school sense of the word. It has really tiny enclosures compared to most zoos proper these days.

disco stabbing horror (lukas), Tuesday, 27 January 2026 19:39 (one week ago)

Who? Oh St Paul yeah it's like other side of the river or something? I think "Minneapolis" is just being used as a catch-all for the greater Twin Cities area, ICE is definitely in St.Paul as well

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 27 January 2026 19:48 (one week ago)

they certainly are and the community resilience and cooperation there has been just as astounding

budo jeru, Tuesday, 27 January 2026 19:48 (one week ago)

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 27 January 2026 20:56 (one week ago)

I feel bad for the school board chair but it’s darkly funny that ICE won’t make their quotas while trying to intimidate people.

Gentler Death Squads Please (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 January 2026 21:29 (one week ago)

I don't think they are really interested in quotas, the White House makes up numbers all the time about how many arrests they've made, they are interested in terrorizing a population into submission

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 27 January 2026 21:46 (one week ago)

I think *Miller* cares about the numbers. I think someone else is cooking the numbers that get to Miller.

I mean, how many times has that fuckin snake McLaughlin repeated the same nonsense statistic about violence against ICE officers in the last 3 months? they're clearly good at it.

Bertolt Blecch (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 January 2026 22:01 (one week ago)

― chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, January 27, 2026 1:46 PM (thirty-three minutes ago)

ah, yes, one of the other many ways GWB paved the way for this administration - the idea that you can "terrorize people into submission". not sure the evidence really bears out that theory.

Bertolt Blecch (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 January 2026 22:57 (one week ago)

ok the dude at the Ecuadorian consulate is a badass. just immediately runs to the trouble and starts saying "no".

ICE saying "if you touch me I'll grab you", like....

...I've tried to avoid calling ICE stupid because I don't want to minimize how much of this shit is by design but I truly don't think some of these people actually know how the law works (in addition to proudly breaking the laws they do know)

my favorite Big Wu reference: https://web.archive.org/web/20051214221024/http://lifterpuller.com:80/citypages.html

Loose talk of boarding the Turf stage and pirating the Selby Tigers' instruments blossoms grandly into a plan to assault random bands at random clubs on random nights. Monick unsheathes his sword and growls, "Avast ye Big Wu" at an imagined Cabooze show.
