If we have a new new romantics movement, does that mean I have to wear ballet shoes, a kilt, frilly shirts and grow an asymetrical fringe?

i'd like to see more silver and glitter a la flock of seagulls

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Please, can we? Can we?

have we all gone mad and forgotten the half-formed romo revival we had in the 90s (somewhere around 95 ish??)

please god, no.

I saw someone at the crown the other day, she was wearting frills AND ballet slippers. I thought it was rather impractical and ugly. Frilly shirts are something I could buy into though, or more especially western shirts with tassles. mmm.

In the interests of a cheap laugh I am converting an old pink dress into something far greater by ripping the side seams apart and inserting black mesh, so I can wear it over my other tacky clothes. Is anyone else embracing the 80's by creating their own monstrosities?

I did miss the mid 90's romantic rivival. but I don't think we had one in Dunedin.

I thought that revivals come around every 20 years.

you were saved the embarrasment really. it was so half-baked and felt like nobody really cared about it. bands like Orlando and Plastic Fantastic (NOT to be confused with Fantastic Plastic Machine).

Complete aside: I just googled romo and found reference to Minty as romo, which is bollocks. they were ace.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh! I mentioned Minty just the other day in the context that if I found a copy of "That's Nice" I would like to buy it. I also have half remembered the Mark and Lard version of that. Oooh, Mark and Lard. I believe I bought a Inbetweener on cassette tape just for the Mark & Lard version: UGLY BLEEDER. Ho ho! MmmmmminTAY!

Who were the other bands on that Romo tape then? Plastic Fantastic, Orlando... who were t'others?

Sarah, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have "that's nice" and "plastic bag". will swap for anything to do with action man :-)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dex-Dexter! I still have that tape kicking around at my parents house somewhere.

RickyT, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dex-Dexter!!! Oh my word! I have that tape at my parents house too! Alan, I don't think I have any action mang toys but I'm intending to go to a car boot sale soon, wanna swap? I have lots of Pokémon toys but am extremely loath to part with them. I can swapsie some Pokémon cards with you though?

Sarah, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have the 'Fiddling While Romo Burns' tape right here! "Free with the March 9, 1996 issue of Melody Maker" the tacklisting is:

(side one)
1. DexDexter 'Creature Feature'
2. Hollywood 'Lights, Camera, Revoloution'
3. Plastic Fantastic 'Complimentary Election'
(side two)
1. Viva 'Now'
2. Orlando 'Nature's Hated'

Thing is you need serious cheekbones to even have a chance of getting away with frilly shirts, ballet shoes and the like.

DavidM, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can always were rouge in lieu of actual cheekbones... or just suck my cheeks in.

smythe,mr smythe, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would be totally into it as I absolutely lurved the New Romantics (as my consternation at the dissing of Ashes to Ashes will bear out), but this stage I fear I would look scary like Patricia Field.

Nicole, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hollywood sounded promising, but what did they actually sound like?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was so sad when Romo didn't make a big splash. I really was. Where did they come from? Where did they go? Well, I guess we know where Dickon went. What happened to the guy in Dex Dexter who looked like Emo Phillips? Loved him.

Zoot Woman don't hold a candle to Dex Dexter, Fantastic Plastic and of course, Orlando.

Arthur, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gah! There was no Romo revival in the mid-nineties you crazy fools!

But, if we're talking about Romo then...

Hollywood were pretty cool, plus, they had the clever gimmick of being girls. Viva were good too. Sexus were best though. DexDexTer were a bit rubbish and so were Plastic Fantastic. Minty WERE quite Romo, they tried something different to most Romo bands because, like, they released some records.

Orlando were never really Romo. Fosca are more Romo than Orlando ever were.

In Italy, most of the top ten is filled with bands who look and sound Romo. One of them is even called Velvet. The Ark are better though, I think they're Swedish. Hurrah for EuRomo!
