Okay how the hell do you get a Gmail account?

Everyone seems to be getting them, like they're in on this big secret and I can't score one.

I know one way is just to be an active Blogger then you get the option of getting one; but is there still no other way?

Aargh my hotmail account is at 90% and it goes account critical every time I get one of those virii in the mail helphelphelp

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, can't you wait?

"Gmail is still in preview mode as we test it to work out the kinks. So for now, it's not generally available."

Ok so hotmail sucks the big one, ESPECIALLY on dial-up, but I'm biding my time.

de, Thursday, 22 April 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

A: No I can not.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Esp. When everyone else is getting one OMG WTF it isn't fair!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are the Special People. They're fair and have stars in their eyes and flowers in their hair.

de, Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but see of course I put my email there de, but they lie! They are giving them out already I tell you! I bet the thing on the bottom of that page just goes straight to /dev/null or whatever.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe you. It's part of their strategy obv.
They're not going to need much help, mind you, unless Msn, Yahoo etc. steam in with vastly improved services, which they're prob. working on as we speak.
But by then gmail will have some cache. Amongst cool people, bloggers etc.

j0hnc3na4rillz (roxymuzak), Sunday, 9 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never seen an episode of pimp my e-mail, is it really like that?

I just got a new e-mail address! I've had the yahoo one for...6 years, I think. maybe 7. I have to get used to change, though, if I'm gonna get my gmail, soon. woo!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 22 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

gmail is weird. is anyone else using it? you have to want to use it's features in order to make it worth using (threaded messages in particular), and doing that requires some rethinking on how to use email my part. you can't delete messages very easily which is also strange. but I haven't gotten any spam at it either which is refreshing.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

by "it's" of course I mean "its". fuck I hate that.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The threading is an interesting concept yeah and so far seems to have good and very bad points. It works well if you use it the way they want it to work - by top-posting all your replies, which I normally HATE PEOPLE DOING, but its the only way the threading will properly work (as what it does is clip off the quoted text below your new text into a link, so the whole back n forth convo looks like a neat forum board or something!)

The problem with this is, it does this by subject line. Which is fatally flawed because, for example, LJ "reply to your post" notifications all have the same subject line, but you wouldnt want those threaded because theyre not all related! So for something like that, its a bit useless.

I havent used it enough yet to see where else it is good and bad, and I dunno if the threading can be disabled (I should look into that). Im liking the idea of how they might be able to deal with spam (by having such a large repository of spam-tagged mail stored, they'll be able to get pretty smart eventually at stopping it before it gets to us).

But the threading... ugh, so far. But, it is still in beta - I should use my account for good and send them some suggestions I suppose.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend does like it but likewise says it's useless for LJ.

Re: the deleting thing, isn't the point that you'll almost never have to delete mail?

I still want one. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah I forgot about this thread! I ended up getting an account from some sympathetic person. I think it's going to end up being really good in the long run because my hotmail address is difficult to explain to people and it fills up and becomes "account size critical" if I don't log in and delete stuff like literally every single day.

I'm in the process of moving my archived emails from hotmail to gmail and even though I got a program that makes it a lot less laborious it's still a pain because hotmail only lets an account do 100 emails a day, so it's taking me several weeks.

Dan I., Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Im a bit confused over the deleting thing - Ive deleted mail without a problem, whats the issue with it being a problem? You delete it, it goes to the trash, then you delete the trash. It rather cheekily then tells you "why delete? You have 1000mb space!" but it deletes it anyway. Of course, their T&C says "residual material" may remain on the system but Im sure that applies to all webmail really.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just mean that there isn't a delete button for every message, the way there is for most webmail . Or if there is I overlooked it.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh? You can select any or all emails by the checkbox to the left, then from the "more actions" dropdown, select "move to trash". Then click yer trash folder, and select "delete forever" if you want them totally blown away. Not the clearest system, I admit.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I mean, it's hidden in a dropdown "action". I'd rather there just be a "delete" submit button; this makes me think they don't want you to delte anything for some reason. Bad usability! But it's still in beta.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah thats a fair point, and likewise that rude "you dont HAVE to delete stuff!" comment goes in the same vein. I can see some privacy paranoia nuts having issue with this, but eh whatever. Agreed, its in beta - we have the chance to make suggestions, and so should.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

OK I signed up for Blogger and created a one-entry blog. How do I get a Gmail account from this? There don't seem to be any obvious links to it...

DougD, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont think just signing up for a blogger now will get you an account - in fact not even all blogger account holders got one. Only "active" users, and I dunno what they class as active - I'd used mine in March and I got one, but my b/f hadnt used his since last Sept I think and he didnt get one.

If you do get one tho, you'll see a large notice on the blogger dashboard page on the right that mentions gmail and you follow the links. If thats not there, no banana :(

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile the Calfornia Senate votes to restrict some of GMail's terms of service

The bill by Democratic state Sen. Liz Figueroa would require Gmail to work only in real-time and would bar the service from producing records.

The bill also would bar Gmail form collecting personal information from e-mails and giving any information to third parties.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats an interesting conundrum. I'd agree with it, in the sense that there's a potential for say, the govt, to demand a handover of someones email for "investigation" or some rubbish. However that can be asked of an ISP now as it stands - the only difference (and the crucial one, I guess) being that with POP3 mail you download and delete it off thr ISP's mail server.

I'm hardly going to be using a webmail account for anything sensitive (eg work related, full personal info etc) anyway.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

would require Gmail to work onliy in real-time

does this make any sense to anyone?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 29 May 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

People at my work claim to be calling people 'in real-time.' Like you can call them on delay. Yeah, that'd work.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What d'you mean "anymore" Leee? So far I havent seen any invites on my gmail account at all (I already have 2 people after me for an account... yeesh its LJ all over again).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Garn, I signed up purely to reap material benefit. And also to break people's hearts, but now it would seem that my heart is at stake. I dismissed my blogger offer when it first appeared, and only read today that hipsters are after this and were willing to give up things.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"Top" "showbiz" "reporter" Billy Sloan has an article in today's Sunday Mail about how Alan Cummings has just got a Gmail account and offers invites as a chat-up line. "Only the rich and famous have been offered accounts and the change to invite friends to sign up, making it the coolest pcik-up line in the States". I could shag my way round half of Hollywood with my "exclusive" batch of 50 invites.

Article not on-line, sadly, but isn't it nice to know that the Scottish popular media is so up-to-date with this here modern interweb?

I was trying to make the point that this is how crap our local papers are here, in that this was in TODAY'S paper, and is what constitutes showbiz "news". The article goes on to say that people are buying invites off ebay. Are people still really doing that?
