Taking Sides: London vs New York

ok, its the big one!

i can't decide. i love them both, but have only had 10 days NYC experience. it seemed massive, but then it seemed more manageable. it actually reminds me of a massive Manchester (that bit around Oldham st, and then those clothes warehouses bits).

who wins?

I want to go to New York this year what with the cheap flights and all.

I can go to London whenever cos my brother has a house now and plenty room for me. I was over a few times in the summer which was cool. I like London, what I've seen. I'm definitely getting the hell out of beautiful Dublin when I finish this damn degree so London could be my first port of call. Be afraid.

I think NYC. London has too many problems and niggling issues to be truly great. london seems much more pretentious. It could do with ten years of centralised authority and a an idea for the future, before it could attempt greatness

Funny, I think that about NYC (at least the pretentious bit, though it's hardly universal ;-)). More seriously -- having spent time in both recently, I find them both overflowing with many good points. Without sounding too macabre, though, I suspect NYC will be a place where your money will go a lot farther these days.

NYC no question. It's not a matter of London being bad; I mean if it was London versus LA or Chi-Town or basically any other US city, London would win. But NYC trumps pretty much everything.

I recon that's true. accommodation is about the same, but food and transport seem loads cheaper, booze about the same, but better measures and opening hours.

Ed, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's basically it. Neither are cheap places to live, so neither has an edge there. I do find that NY is a more diverse place, but that's based on limited experience and it's not really anything I'd give a huge edge over another place on anyhow, so let's call that even too. Both have a lot of things to do, which normally would make it even except all of the things to do are open much, much later in NYC. Despite silly caberet laws, NYC has a better nightlife than virtually anywhere, including London. Plus, the sports.

Ah but have we placed Dublin into the equation....we now have a large metal spike on our main street. It's what folks from abroad call "culture". Dublin...NYC....and London are like the holy trinity. Er.......perhaps not.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

London has White Hart Lane so it trumps all.

Jonnie, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New York has Gansevoort St. Think about that.

Ally, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But London has curvy streets and alleys and nooks and crannies and ginnels and NYC has.... lots of grids. Hmmmm.

Sarah, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dublin has me.

You all lose.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grids are much better, but if you want nooks you just have to go downtown, ie the most confusing place ever. ESPECIALLY the financial district, holy shit.

Ally, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

for confusing NYC streets you want Queens. bizzarre tringular grid from hell, it will suck you in.

Ed, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found the grids rather souless, myself. And on the few times I actually walked the streets I wasn't paying that much attention. I really have to go visit that there Americkley again... if you're reading this Matty, can I come visit you and Brian and the cats?

Sarah, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was just ODD. I really have to visit again and just go and walk the streets for a while. I could NOT understand the subway. Or that strange coin system thing they've got going on. Me. Need. Visit. AIR FARES HOW MUCH?

Sarah, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus, the sports.

Speaking of which, does visiting Arizona from NYC result in a massive sapping of strength or what? I was not expecting the overall run balance to be 13-1 after two games in favor of the Diamondbacks.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I felt like committing suicide last time I was in Arizona, so yeah, probably.
