Which ones are your favourite? And which ones do you have irrational dislikes against?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ceska Republika, samoszrene!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

...err, my favorite is obviously the one where I live, the Czech Republic, the accession of which I (dare I say it?) made a small contribution to (working for the EU and all)... Ok, I'll stop now.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are they again? <----- archetypal British attitude

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Cyprus NO
Czech Republic YES
Estonia YES
Hungary YES
Latvia NO
Lithuania NO
Malta WILL ANYONE NOTICE?
Poland NO
Slovakia NO
Slovenia NO

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Does NO mean destroy or search?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I had a really great holiday in the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia once. The food was excellent and cheap, Kosice very pretty (Bratislava a little less so), there's certainly a racism problem with Gypsies, but apart from that I say Slovakia is cool.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently in foreign languages, the names of Slovakia and Slovenia are even more interchangeable, which makes their adoption of the Euro all the more imperative.

errrr, if Slovenia hasn't already adopted the Euro.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

YES - irrational acceptance
NO - irrational non-acceptance

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Malta and Cyprus will soon be full of British students working in bars.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

don't Cyprus have to sort themselves out and reunify before they can accede to the EU? Or did I imagine that?

The Czech Republic is the only one of the accession countries I've visited. I really liked it. And I met Baaderoni!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If Cyprus agrees on both side to the UN-brokered plan in a vote, then everyone there joins the EU -- otherwise, just the Greek half will join.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

finally the ball in the turks court

cypriot poster, Friday, 23 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

During the ceremony, do all the other member countries sing the "Gabba Gabba" song?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Fingers crossed!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

finally the ball in the turks court

surely the ball is in the Greek Cypriots' court, as the Turkish Cypriots look set to endorse the referendum overwhelmingly? The Greek Cypriots now have the opportunity to reunite their country AND reach out the hand of friendship to their Turkish fellow Cypriots... worryingly opinion polls suggest they will say "FUKU YOPU TURKISH CPRIOTS!" and chortesomely join the EU without their northern compatriots.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amused by the way the EU commissioners are now very annoyed by the Greek Cypriots.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 25 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i am strongly considering applying for polish citizenship to get total eu access.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately total EU access will not apply to accession countries for several years (seven). The only countries allowing fairly unrestricted immigration from accession countries are the UK and Ireland. In the UK you will have to register with the authorities and you won't be able to claim benefits until you have worked for a certain period of time. Most other countries have blocked immigration without prior permission, i.e. a work permit system will still apply for varying amounts of time.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 25 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm ok with that, ed, as i'd really only do it to work in the uk anyway. at this point i'm more worried about inadvertently getting drafted into the polish army.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, does poland even have an army?

"mark, the germans are coming. DO something."

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, does poland even have an army?

I think they have troops in Iraq, so they are always on the lookout for new citizens.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

at this point i'm more worried about inadvertently getting drafted into the polish army.

If you're a Polish citizen living abroad, Mark, it's not a problem. My family emigrated the US when I was 7 and for the last few years I was a bit worried about being drafted whenever I went back, but they recently passed a law to clear that up.

the krza (krza), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

emigrated TO the us. gah!

the krza (krza), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh well, that's good news. i wasn't really looking forward to a tussle.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Malta sounds a bit like hell on Earth, I have to say. Or am I thinking of Gibraltar?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i bet i could totally beat them in a war.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Malta sounds a bit like hell on Earth, I have to say. Or am I thinking of Gibraltar?

Gibraltar has mega-cheap booze'n'fags. But I wouldn't want to live there.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest, I imagine mega-cheap booze'n'fags would be just the kind of thing hell would have.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

malta's part of the commonwealth, innit?

it's also supposed to be really nice, if yer into old stuff.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagined being full of chip shops and reactionary politics.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

and random googlers.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, mega-cheap booze'n'fags = A REAL GOOD IDEA. though that also sounds like delaware, which =/= A REAL GOOD IDEA.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Gibraltar has monkeys too.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally can't post photos today.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I DON'T CARE THAT IT HAS MONKEYS. It's the kind of place the Daily Mail would turn Britain into if it had its way and any spurious 'monkeys' (they're not really monkeys at all) cannot make up for this.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

but what WAS gibraltar before the UK took over? just a big rock at the tip of spain!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

a big rock WITH SMELLY APES

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Barbary Apes then, pedant.

(my photo was nicer)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

see.... Ape eating a banana, and a nice view as well.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

N - Maltese people are, like, obsessive mental Anglophiles. I saw the England Turkey match there and people were going absolutely menko, singing all the right songs, full on red England 66 shirts, waving St George's crosses. When the final whistle blew Three Lions and then World In Motion and Vindaloo were queued up on the jukebox and everyone started dancing. All the British people looked bemused.

Plus the first shop I saw on leaving my hotel was a Dorothy Perkins (!) Malta is full of old British people and crumbling churches, it's actually really pleasant.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you mean gibraltarians?

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I get the impression Malta is like Italy only with the added handiness of them all speaking English rather than foreign. I want to go there some time for a relaxing holiday.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Paul Theroux's defense of the poor barbary apes. "The ape is cruel: when I pinch him he bites me."

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Monday, 26 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

seventeen years pass...

So when’s Hungary getting thrown out.?

Bo Burzum (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 12 August 2021 17:00 (four years ago)

lol

Left, Thursday, 12 August 2021 17:04 (four years ago)

never

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 12 August 2021 18:59 (four years ago)

but i thought free trade encouraged democracy :(

Bo Burzum (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 12 August 2021 19:04 (four years ago)

four years pass...

So ... what do people think of the Hungarian election? It seems objectively good if Orban loses, but Peter Magyar does not give me good vibes. I guess he'd be less of a Russian cheerleader, theoretically open to rolling back some of Orban's authoritarian measures? Or will he just use those powers himself?
