the popular american sitcom...probably there has been a thread on this, but typing friends into the title search function threw up over 100 threads, most of which were not about the sitcom.

classic, always makes me laugh.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic

don (don), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

barely adequate yet superior to most other mainstream offerings, another symbol of decline.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud. Not funny in the slightest and couldn't give a fuck about any of the characters.

penelope_11, Friday, 23 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't it more of a soap opera than a laugh-inducing sitcom now? not necessarily a criticism (although it kinda is) but when i do watch new ones, it is more to see what becomes of them rather than to be amused. for the first couple of series i laughed heartily, so semi-classic i guess...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It makes me laugh when I am supposed to & cry when I'm supposed to. I don't really think it is a soap, surely just a sitcom.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Penelope_11 OTM. Classic only if compared to ally mcbeal.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Joe Stalin bit amongst a few others was great.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

it is still a sitcom, but the (small) appeal it still holds for me is as a soap opera rather than a sitcom. i'm wondering if this is the same for other perhaps.

they seem to have given the characters bizarre new characteristics / personal histories / put them in bizarre and unlikely situations in order to squeeze a tiny bit more humour out of them (see also frasier and that stupid marice murder nonsense)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(fave friends scene = chandler walking in while ross is practicing talking dirty on joey. perfectly timed, makes me lol without fail)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Thsi show's enduring popularity is the main reason why I have no faith in western society. I suppose that's quite impressive really.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It really is terrible. Joey is reasonable, but the rest are vile.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Resisted it for years then saw a couple and errrrrrrrrrrrrr laughed. Tho Ross is repulsive and none of the women are funny, Phoebe least of all.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Phoebe is awful.

It's got a horrible sort of sheen to it by now, the characters are the jokes.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's very watchable though, cos it's so totally vacuous I guess.

what irks me is that it lurks on the border of seriousness or actually meaning something and yet persists with the tiresomely ludicrous situations tailored only for a cheap laugh off the back of the characters that have been built.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Joey passable, the rest of the show dud.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to like the old Chandler, when he reminded me of me, now he's all mature and married and resonsible, NOTHING LIKE ME!!

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Chandler keeps changing - sometimes he's the wired speedfreak Chandler and sometimes he's the fat anti-depressants Chandler. How like real life.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a massive dud, some of the most irritating crap I've ever had to endure on TV, especially in the company of others. I mean, it's nice when they're hating on Ross and Monica, but they still won't change the channel. When I watch it, it's like reminding myself how frustrating people can be.

The only worthwhile aspect is and always will be Matthew Perry. Chandler is classic.

Suit against Warner Bros. reinstated; says Friends set racist, sexist snakepit
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California appeals court reinstated a sexual and racial harassment lawsuit filed by a woman who said she was subjected to offensive comments while working for the sitcom Friends.
Amaani Lyle, who worked as a writer’s assistant for the show in 1999, sued Warner Bros. Television Productions and three writers for the program, saying they constantly joked about women and sex and often ridiculed and mocked black people.
The defendants argued vulgar comments, gestures and jokes were a regular part of creating a program about sexually active young people and in 2002 a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge dismissed Lyle’s suit.
But on Wednesday the 2nd District Court of Appeal reinstated it in part, ruling the defence’s position was not strong enough to warrant a dismissal.
The panel refused to reinstate Lyle’s claim she was fired because she is black and a woman and there was retaliation because she complained about the dearth of black characters on the program.
Lawyer Adam Levin, representing the defendants, said the ruling may be appealed to the state Supreme Court because it could have a “chilling effect” on other media.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Was definitely classic for a long time but has fallen into the fertility trap along with Will and Grace. Childless couples who are upset about being childless are NOT FUNNY!

My mam hates it because even though they're supposed to be friends, they spend all of their time trying to fuck each other over in a way that real friends just wouldn't. And these guys are supposed to be likeable. At least on Seinfeld they were all meant to be selfish bastards who didn't care about anyone else.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

accentmonkey's last paragraph 100% otm - such an odious group of people, but i get the feeling i'm supposed to think their vile character traits are quirky and loveable. which creeps me out.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

There was awhile there, when Joey & Chandler still lived together, in the apartment with the duck and the hen, that the show was really quite funny. Fr'instance: FIREBALL.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck those honky motherfuckers

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(perhaps another reason why earlier episodes were better - a certain naivety to their squabbles in the early days, relatively harmless i think. a lot of the recent in-group feuds have been really quite unpleasant and petulant. just quite ugly to see a bunch of grown adults acting that way [especially as these are ppl we are supposed to like and be charmed by])

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Still, I guess that a bunch of friends who just are really nice to each other all the time are not going to be very funny, are they?

I'm also not sure I like the new, neutered Friends that they show on RTE and E4 at, like, 6pm, with all the references to sex crudely edited. There's something weird about that.

A Failing Grade For "Friends": Sitcom was trashed in confidential 1994 NBC research report

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"this group did not really care about each other the way real friends would. They found the characters smug, superficial, and self-absorbed."

accurate enough.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Crap, I had this whole thing in mind, and then when I clicked the thread it was about the damned TV show.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it was about the damned TV show.

hahaha that would be the best variety show ever!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude...I would clear my schedule for that.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed.

I never really cared about this show for most of it's run, but I started renting some episodes on video and DVD recently and have really gotten into it, in spite of myself. A lot of the criticism levelled against this show is perfectly valid. It's depiction of New York City as a lily white paradise full of nothing but coffee shops and attractive people, where underemployed actors and waitresses can afford to live in large, beautiful apartments is a little grating, and I would never actually be friends with any of the characters, save Joey. However, I find it consistently funny and as with most of my favourite television shows (The Cosby Show, The Wonder Years) I get the impression that these characters really care about each other. I find the boy-love between Chandler and Joey especially touching. For the record, I use the phrase "boy-love" in a very platonic sense, although other interpretations of that phrase might have made for some really interesting sub-plots.

I absolutely love Friends & continue to find it amusing. Much to the disgust of most ppl on ILX I suppose!
