Graham hates "on the money". Ally hates ALL OF IT! What do you wu - er, love...and what suXoR?

Tom, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eye heart everything, duh.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate GRATE. You did ask.

james, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm kind of leaning towards all of it being a bit annoying. I wouldnt say hate. It's just a ship that sailed without me.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R spekaing true english! I R finding it in queens english dictionary! I r breaking into buckingham palace (with my sponge and I R's rusty spanner, hemhem!)

I R prof. of englishology!, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like "grate" because I can't ever say the word without thinking of that spelling, and "wuv" is irritating because I already say that I LOVE everything. I like the "Xors" though.

Maria, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the swearing & name calling, but I like all of you. Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grate grates.

james, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Grate" is by far the worst, though the new "I R a fucking moron" trend is really getting up there for me. Tom is right though, I hate all your slang, that's why I don't do it but when I do my own slang I get copied and then I have to stop because it becomes ILE slang by default, which is ass, duh.

Ally, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R would be watching my back if I R were you ally! grrr!

I R angry, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tired of - grate (especially so when no other words misspelled, less so when capitalized, not so at all when Sarah or MJ use it), "I R"

Not Tired of yet - wuv

Deathless - XoR, equals sign = classic, classic/dud

Revived - cockfarmer

Mark Sinker by the way is not on holiday, he is in a secret bunker working on the IL* words and phrases for 2002.

Tom, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think I ever stopped using kokphamah.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can we declare a moratorium on "grate," then? I hate it as well, since I tend to overuse "grate" in the legitimate sense when talking about music.

Actually, I'll take care of the moratorium personally.

Nitsuh, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Cockfarmer" is fine. I hate most of the rest.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, nevermind -- I'll wait a day. Then I will post the "URGENT AND KEY: no one likes it when you say 'grate,' so you might want to take that into account in the future" thread.

Nitsuh, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like all the slang, and I think Ally is a miseryguts who needs a good tickling.

DG, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does nobody larff any more? Or did they ever? I have trouble with 'wuv', but no problem with grate. But some of it totally puzzles me. Xor?

Search: Dude, where's my...? It slipped out in York and has spread like wildfire, proving that as a phrase it has the power of a thousand suns.

Al, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does nobody larff any more? Or did they ever?

Does anyone remember LAUGHTER?!?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used urgent and key in a text message and confused the fuck out of Sara (who must be mentioned in every post), who thought I meant it literally. Anyway, I love everything (that just came out as what I thought, and I'm not gonna change it), except OTM.

Graham, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And anything Fat Nick related. Sorry, but I'll hit you when I [next] see you.

Graham, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wouldn't do that Graham, he'll mash you.

DG, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I R drunk. I'll take on anyone. Car Park. Now.

Graham, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, I mean it, don't pick a fight with FatNick, you'll get hurt.

DG, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG, I'm trying my hardest to be a drunken thug here. Throw me a fricking bone.

Graham, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Grate" really gets on my nerves, and what's worse is that often people all caps it. Whether that's on purpose to annoy people, I don't know. "Wuv" is annoying too, because I always imagine someone actually saying the word and sounding like a total idiot. I'm still a fan of "-XoR" for some reason. Maybe it's because it is more dynamic than the others.

palpable, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd have thought that about 'wuv' too if I hadn't heard Emma and Pete say it and have it sound funny.

Tom, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish the I R stuff would go away, and that Xor stuff too. Grate doesn't grate though for me.

sorry I'm the curmudgeon this morning.

chris, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the GRATE and all-caps haters need to read Molesworth asap.

i like it all except maybe for 'wuv', but that is growing on me. 'I R' may be annoying in a month or two

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i just get worried as i tend to pick up slang remarkably easily. however since i read MOLESWORTH well before discovering ILE and have been saying things like "as any fule kno" for years i don't feel as thogh i've nicked it from anyone. it's GRATE to have it back infact, cheers cheers.

apart from that i really like all the ILE slang. keep on with yer cockfarmers and yer I Rs, that's what i say!

katie, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, it was very weird to find that everyone on ILM seemed to have read Molesworth. for years i was the only person i knew with a copy [chiz chiz]. also there are lots here who are interested in the Underground, railway lines, and that sort of stuff which is cool

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"cockfarmer" and "wuv" are shocking and must go.

i like:"(x is)...urgent and key".

ambrose, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why does everyone hate Cockfarmer so?

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like cockfarmer. i like "knobgoblin" more though.

katie, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

KNOBGOBLIN!

RickyT, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES. the knobgoblins have invaded!!

katie, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ambrose, remeber we are going to middle sized Tom's this evening

Ed, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ILE slang is mostly annoying rubbish but I have been known to lapse, at least in my head. (sorry I had to say it). GRATE reminds me of my old UK-Indie mailing list days when I worked at the BBC so it has nostalgia value. I also don't like the word sucks (or suxor), but am often lost for words to replace it so coddled in americanisms am I.

Ed, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'pongs'?

Nick, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't hate cockfarmer, I just think it's a pretty silly word. I'd rather a good old fasioned insult like fool or something. Maybe I'm missing something .

Ronan, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love cockfarmer BECAUSE it is a silly word. This reminds me also that I haven't used TWUNT in a while. Mingpiece is also quite good, as is QUARE in the Brendan Behan sense. I said earlier that Ally-ese has a rhythm I like; it's entertaining.

By and large I wait for slang crazes on ILE to die out naturally. It would be really rude to say if any annoyed me - I have more subtle means.

suzy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cockfarmer and fuckpuppet delight me.

Maria, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have never used 'G----', or 'W--', or, actually, any of the ilx sland (i think). i do not mind if other people see fit to though

gareth, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We shouldn't pigion hold people (as it says on the Jay-Z vs. Nas Throwdown thread). There's not enough IL* slang on the Jay-Z/Nas thread. There's not enough Jay- Z/Nas slang on IL*. G to the izzeR, A to the izzaTE. I'll let you hold my pigion if you'll let me hold yours.

Frank Kogan, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love that thread, and all the loonies it attracts.

bnw, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally: if [x]is bus, do you or do you not like [x]?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Holy cow. i've never looked at the JayZ/Nas thread before. Who are all those people?

my fave new hip hop slang: all up in my kool-aid.

Samantha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wow that's a shouty wordy thread (jay-z/nas).

One thing that bugs me is using "gay" to mean various varieties of crap. i realise that this isn't ILE, it seems to be a N. American thing in general. i really hope it doesn't catch on here tho. it works in fun if you're on about actually, well, GAY things, but not about things that are simply crap.

Alan at home, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One reason for my putting that link was to encourage more IL* regulars to post on that Throwdown thread, since it's become ghettoized. (And I've sent emails to DonWas, Hillis, and Qoolout begging them to post on other IL* threads, too.) Also, I feel weird that there hasn't been some response to all the homophobia and sexism on that thread, but I haven't yet figured out what to say, or how not to be preachy and combative in saying it. I've thought of "I'm gay. I love this thread, but..." as a good beginning, but I'm not gay, so it would be dishonest.

By the way, Jay-Z's "Takeover" is a killer track, and the album Blueprint is worth the money (if that's what you like).

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alan - 'gay' in that sense has caught on here, especially among youngsters

m jemmeson, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

pfff, kids eh. the little perishers.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did have a little weird not somewhere in that thread expressing general concern. Then it seemed to die down within the next few days anyway, so I dropped it.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also -- note that the entire thread is based on a Nas verse where he gay-baits Jay-z.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
All are welcome to come to the thread and state whatever you got to say. Don't say it here and be scared to bring it there.

Qool, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cool - they have ambassadors now!

Tim, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That they do. But how come they don't share our love over here more often? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe it's risky to divert troops in the middle of a war.

Tim, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really do like 'fuckpuppet'. It's a useful word, too. Did someone on ILE actually coin it, or if not, does anyone know who did?

N., Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

isn't that Jonnie's? or was that magical realist fuckbunny?

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wuv 'manboob'.

Sarah, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
'Ning' reprazent!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 27 April 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

you just made that up!

duane, Sunday, 27 April 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Duane, 'ning' is a Suzy term, a derogatory one for people. She'll have to explain what she means by it, because I think I'd misrepresent her.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 April 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope to God "bring on it fuckfaces" sticks around, it gives me the giggles but good

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 27 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ning" really sounds as if it has to be said, rather than just written down. It needs to be accompanied by hand-movement and facial expression to be expressed to its full potential.

Is it my imagination, or is the rate of ilx slang-generation slowing down?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 28 April 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

martin, "you just made that up!" is a standard running gag, i say it all the time & it gets funnier & funnier (to me)

duane, Monday, 28 April 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...

ron (ron), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

God, this thread is so precious! Back in 2001--the first worries over "u r all gay!"

Also, this:

Ally: if [x]is bus, do you or do you not like [x]?

I don't remember what that slang, "bus", meant, but it needs revival.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"You lie like a kite" is my fave of the recent slang.

What's the etymology of "grebt"? Someone get tired of GRATE?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it came off of some thread on ILM where it started as a typo. Kind of like "Bring on it fuckfaces" but with a longer half-life, apparently.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

someone said it started on phone text-messaging, y'know?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Its like more internet-wide typoisms such as "teh" and "froup", which I see a lot, in fact I'm heartily sick of seeing "teh".

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH TEH TEH KILL KILL KILL TEH TEH TEH

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(i hate it too, btw)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

but its teh rox0r!

*runs and hides*

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

where is "you lie like a kite" being used, exactly? I'm glad it's entered the lexicon, but are there specific instances aside from JBR announcing its entrance into the pantheon? not a big deal, just curious

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that a Simpsons phrase? Not that I'm accusing JBR of pinching it of course! I just could swear I'd hear Bart or Homer say it before but I'm probably misremembering.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it's from the 'funny things so-and-so's step father says' or summat

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it, it reminds me of things like "hey make like a tree and go away".

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, it's Matos's phrase.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen 'you lie like a kite' used regularly on the rotating ILX chats, so there's yer primary use, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

it's not ilx-specific iirc, but did saying "k-" as a prefix, eg "k-rub" mean, "very"?

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

yes

phillippa minge (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

like kilo-rub??

Enemy Insects (NickB), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

k

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 11:54 (sixteen years ago)

Oh gawd, NING. The foreshortened version of the opening bars from 'Deliverance' used to describe the myopically inbred, when encountered.

going vogue (suzy), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

I always read it as being 1000xrub, but that was probably wrong.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)
