Tracks might make good ring tones

I've produced several tracks of my own, using synthesizers, etc., which I think would make excellent ring tones for mobiles. Does anyone know how I could go about getting said tracks formatted so they can be downloaded by mobile phone users. Or at least, in the first instance, can someone tell me if it's possible to somehow get a track from my computer, where it currently languishes as an mp3, onto my own mobile phone, which is a 2002 Nokia type that plays music as opposed to those rhetro bleepy tones.

Thanks! That would be great - just to know how; I'd be interested even if it turns out it's not practicable for me to do this kind of stuff myself, due to my technical limitations or something.

I looked into this about a year ago...each phone seems to support different incompatible formats, but many of these are just plain ascii text files (especially monophonic ringtones). There seem to be a lot of tools to take midi files and convert them to something a phone will understand. Who knows, maybe phones play midi files these days as well.

I gave up on my project to work on my undergrad thesis...best of luck though.

Very kind of you Silas, thanks. I expect it's not going to be easy to set up the sort of enterprise I'm toying with. I strongly suspect that, because the industry would not welcome the competition, I may be overwhelmed by the esoterics of the technology, and would soon be forced to mothball my project, as you did. I'll keep you posted on this thread if I make any progress.

there seems to be a convertor here - from mp3 to ringtone.

with a Nokia, it looks like you'll first have to convert from wav to midi, and then to an Sp-midi format (a file Nokias understand), using the Mobile Music Polyphonic Version 1.9 software.
