I R wanting dull saturday night telly related answers!

I R fatnick!, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Fatnick, How are you doing? Where are you from? Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On Saturday night I was watching Sapphire and Steel. That is dull television, I saw the last adventure and was wondering why anyone watched it.

I have not seen either of the programmes you mentioned, but long live Saturday night television as long as La Femme Nikita reigns supreme, with non stop music videos afterwards

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you found sapphire and steel boring because you don't understand it, mene. if you'd seen the previous 5 adventures you would know how great it is. and BTW, david mccallum is SOO sexy. i lurve surly men

did you see saturday nights episode of LFN, mene? i hope steve still has it videotaped.

di, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The VAST majority of people find Sapphire and Steel boring. They are, of course, wrong. The writer, PJ Hammond, was a special stripe of tv drama genius.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well it must be nice to be part of an exclusive majority Alan.

OK I should give it a chance by watching through the first episodes then. It might make more sense.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah menelaus you so don't get it. but by the way, that doesn't mean i subscribe to the idea that the writer was a "genius". i find the concept to be not only ridiculous but also tedious.

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh well then, I think I am going to have to get myself a web diary so I can deal with my issues some place other than the ILE forum. Currently I am in a sulky mood & feeling underappreciated so the idea of Genius is something I would quite like to espouse for myself. I could be tortured rather than just inadequate.

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but your not tortured, menelaus. there is more to your personality than that, thank god

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

See! You dont understand me!

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have only known you for like two seconds. if your gonna get all tortured on me, then i would have to say you picked an unlikely sympathiser. but aha! maybe thats contributing to your romanticly angsty opium-ridden existence, Herr Schumann.

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and I'ma not gonna stop taking cocaine until my nose falls off woo-ooh

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, shit mene i thought it was sherbert. thanks a lot

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, thats what I sell to otago girls students

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maybe you should try that on fatnick

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the secret is out now. besides I don't think fatnick is foul enough to run with my pack of wolves.

I really am excelling myself foulness-wise tonite. mmm tastie

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes your foulness is exceptional, i could smell you all the wqay across arc. oh no that was just the wafty hippies upstairs

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely you jest, I am as fresh and fragrant as a daisy. speaking of which, I might theive some flowers tonight, the last lot I stole are looking a bit swarthy

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mene i've just eaten i packet of blue cheese and you say the word "swarthy". god i've been trying to forget i screwed that guy.

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and you just had to share that over the internet didn't you? spread the bile, spread the bile!

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey hes your friend

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eh?

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

blimey, i wasn't being *entirely* serious folks. it seems ridiculous to call an obscure writer a genius, especially if the VAST majority of people find his work boring. it must be nice to be part of *any* majority.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my point was that it seems ridiculous to call ANYONE a genius. hey but don't worry, i weren't having a go at you or nothing alan.

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

should culture and artistic value be dictated by the wants of the masses?

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

am I even making sense? its too late in the day for this

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it is vaguely ridiculous, but i find it a good label for people working creatively in ways that are a huge break from previous work and yet are utterly compelling.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i prefer to use the term "talented". there's an awful lot of baggage that the term genius brings with it which people who would be otherwise intelligent often subscribe to. i don't want to get into this too deeply, i might step on some peoples toes.

di, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and in saying that i've probably made some people paranoid, so perhaps i will have to elaborate. think of the way in which the word genius also carries with it connotations of psychological imbalances. you can see how that would wrok against women - men get branded as tortured geniuses, whereas a talented woman could never be branded as a genius thanks to our sexist culture, her talents would be inauthentic as shes "mad".

i also am wary of the way in which the label genius seems to elevate people to a level above critique.

on a different path, there's a certain local celebrity who is often referred to by himself and others as a genius, and this seems to pass as some kind of excuse for him behaving quite despicably. which, after the valid reasons i have already stated for my suspicion of the term, just serves to make me feel more strongly against it.
