POO: Movies Set In Texas

and/or discussion of Texas movies

I saw The Last Picture Show again last night, just saw Frailty, I've seen Office Space and Dazed & Confused dozens of times together, A Perfect World is Clint Eastwood's best as director. Haven't seen most Westerns set in Texas, or the new Alamo movie. Or Giant - I need to rectify that, I think.

So many great films, it's tough to choose.

(note: this might be the one and only Texas-pride post you'll ever see out of me)

There was one involving a murder spree or something like that, I don't recall the title...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i would say that last picture show is by far the best i have seen

todd swiss (eliti), Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

As a proud San Antonian, I have to say that Cloak & Dagger is the coolest TX-set film out there. IMHO. Intrigue! Bad visual effects! Lots and lots of shots of the city that don't normally get highlighted! Halfway decent acting! Me watching the film going, "I've been there! And there! I know about that place! I remember when that place was still there!"

Since "The Last Picture Show" has been mentioned, I'll mention "Hud". It is another good 20th century western based on a book by Larry McMurtry.

Days of Heaven (1978) is was of the most beautifully shot films I've seen, set in Texas though I believe it was filmed in Canada

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Sunday, 2 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Dazed and Confused on this one.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Sunday, 2 May 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Giant - I need to rectify that, I think.

Ask for Janice is going to tan your hide for not seeing that earlier.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" really does have some gorgeous moments (I love Franklin's accent!) tho obv it's a pretty horrible thing to choose as my fav cinema Texas moment. Leatherface's dance at the end tho, wow. "Head" cos Michael Nesmith was the main Monkee and that movie wasn't really "set" anywhere so let's say it was Texas

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Lone Star

Days of Heaven is a better movie of course, but I don't think of it as a Texas movie.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Dazed and Confused

The Second Drummer Drowned (Atila the Honeybun), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

and where does Five Easy Pieces take place? Is that Texas or Oklahoma? Because that's a good one, too.

The Second Drummer Drowned (Atila the Honeybun), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Rushmore
Bottle Rocket
Brewster McCloud
Reality Bites
The movie which "stars" Henry Rollins as a cop
The Bad News Bears
Fandango
Tin Cup

el maury, Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

are you serious about Brewster McCloud? I swear it's one of the worst things I've ever seen.

The Second Drummer Drowned (Atila the Honeybun), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the oil field scenes were both set and shot in Callifornia

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Legend of Billie Jean!

Actually, Last Picture Show is my pick, too, but LBJ needed a mention.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Last Picture Show is one of my favourite movies (and a great book, with two terrific sequels, one made into the awful film Texasville), so that, definitely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was just thinking that it's a shame Texasville didn't come out as well since it probably means they'll never film a version of Duane's Depressed. But fans of the movie should definitely read the book(s).

what was that weird henry rollins road movie? the chase? i think they shot part of that near where i grew up outside houston.

duke houston, Sunday, 2 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Giant - I need to rectify that, I think.

:)

I've said it here many times before but I'll say it again: GIANT! GIANT! GIANT!

I'm slightly obssesed with this film, I have three framed vintage posters for it my living room. Only money prevents me from covering my walls with more.
My dorky little fan page

Milo, come FAP with me in the EDT and we'll have a watching party.

re: Austin Stories. I have this whole series on tape and love busting it out for nostalgia's sake. (shed a tear for pre-net boom Austin). A college buddy of mine was one of the regular characters. It was his fifteen minutes.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 2 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't they film parts of The Chase on a "new" (at that time) section of Beltway 8? I think this was sometime after Huey Lewis and the News performed. To non-Houstonians: HL & The News performed at a toll road dedication. Consider yourselves informed.

el maury, Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa el maury sounds like we are from the same area, or you are/were just civially aware. that huey lewis reminder is on point.

duke cypress, Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

chainsaw and last picture show would be my picks.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Duke Cypress --

I am from just off Gessner, between Long Point and Hammerly. A product of Spring Woods High School. I live in Athens, GA now, but I enjoy going back a few times a year. You know, I used to detest Spring Branch (and all of H-Town), but now I sort of appreciate it. You have all of these ethnic groups that have moved in since the 70s, and it's really a vibrant community. On Witte Rd, the building is still standing where my dad, while in high school, repaired lawnmowers. Next to it is a Vietnamese restaurant, and next to that is a Mexican grocery. I think it's cool.

el maury, Monday, 3 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone who doesn't pick Tobe's timeless classic here is fooling themselves.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure

anonymous, please, Monday, 3 May 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

maury i lived in klein early part of my childhood but served the duration (thru hi skool, cy-fair) in cypress. i've lived in NYC for over ten years but my folks are still in houston. and you're right it's no step down in cultural diversity when i go back. it's just so flat and expansive to me now whereas i had no perspective on that when i was growing up there. bear in mind we've had an exchange revolving around an overpass here basically

duke forest, Monday, 3 May 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

hey sam, if you would be willing to hook me up with austin stories, would you email me about maybe some trade ideas? i have a few episodes but would love to have them all!

ron (ron), Monday, 3 May 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

cloak and dagger blew my mind when i was a kid. i saw henry thomas just the other day on the street.
