Oh, I remember several First of Mays back here in the north, when it was snowing or hailstorming.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 2 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think you're going to endear yourself to matt by equating northern finland and wisconsin. ;)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It snowed here all day on Friday, sorry to send it your way. Today it's to be almost 80 though, so that should move east too.

Hunter (Hunter), Sunday, 2 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Finland is considerably warmer.

Skottie, Monday, 3 May 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been like 80+ in the five-oh-thrizzy. Ludicrously nice. I'd rather have snow.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

We're having spring in Vermont, too. It snowed Wednesday. 80's the past couple of days and black flies by the legions.

Back in the sixties, it snowed on the fourth of July parade. It's just heaven around here with the weather.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

update if you care:
meteorologically
it's getting schizo:

by end of the week
we'll be rockin' seventies
LIKE MOLLY HATCHET

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

If it stayed in the seventies all summer, that would be fine with me. But I think we'd be flirtin' with disaster.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Minnesota was pretty nice today, they said it was supposed to snow but it stayed at least mid-50's I'd say. Wore the t-shirt all day.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

incrementally warmer now.

It stopped already, it was a mixture of rain and snow, but it was there (and definitely different from the hail we got yesterday). That's the first time I can remember seeing snow in Toronto in May.

We've had our heat off for a month (in Mtl), as some kind of mentalist celebration? as if spring had hit April 1? and I have had to wear wool socks and wrap myself in blankets every evening. If it snows, I think I've already resigned myself to toughing it out... fack.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A cold storm dusted parts of Southern California with snow, snarling traffic and closing highways, but delighting many residents who raced outside to quickly snap pictures or pack together snowballs before the unusual sighting melted away.

The fast-moving storm that dropped snow in the mountains above Malibu and left streets and lawns in Venice, Westwood and elsewhere covered with ice from hail on Wednesday was the latest blast from a cold snap that has kept California in an icy grip for a week.

The forecast for Thursday called for continued chilly temperatures, with lows in the 30s and 40s.

The National Weather Service said the rare wintry precipitation was from an upper-level low moving through the region. Snow levels plunged well below 1,000 feet.

The dusting was an unusual sight for motorists on Kanan Dume Road in the Santa Monica Mountains where it’s more typical to see beach-bound cars loaded with surfboards than a snowplow. It's been at least 18 years since some parts of the area recorded any snow.

Architect Doug Rucker was at his home studio located on a mountain ridge at about 1,700 feet near Kanan Dume Road in Malibu. He said snow was “bouncing like popcorn off my lawns.”

“I went out to take pictures of the snow coming down and after it landed ... It is kind of unusual,” he said.

Jen Naylor, a Los Angeles native, rushed to her sister’s house in Westwood, where the white stuff briefly accumulated in the backyard.

Forecasters say that area was more likely blanketed with irregularly shaped hailstones called graupel that can be confused with snowflakes, but that didn’t diminish Naylor's enthusiasm.

“This was the first time I made a snowman in L.A.,” Naylor told the Los Angeles Times. “We used dried cranberry for the eyes and a baby carrot for the nose because it was a baby snowman.”

The wintry mix brought troubles to Interstate 5, where authorities shut down the highway after heavy snow and ice caused big-rigs to jackknife and block traffic over the 4,144-foot Tejon Pass between the Los Angeles Basin and the San Joaquin Valley.

“We had no idea that it was coming, it just hit us all at once,” said Officer Dave Pokorny of the CHP’s Newhall Station.

Officers on Wednesday escorted motorists through the treacherous path, known as the Grapevine, but then shut down the highway indefinitely, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said.

The cold set in late last week, bringing night after night of freezing overnight temperature to many parts of the state and causing extensive agricultural damage.

In the high desert north of Los Angeles, the early morning low Wednesday was 8 degrees at Lancaster and 14 at Palmdale. Numerous other points in Southern California had lows in the 30s, with some areas in the 20s.

Fire departments across Southern California have reported hundreds of calls in recent days about burst pipes. The Victorville courthouse got flooded when sprinkler heads ruptured, and broken irrigation lines may have caused a mudslide that blocked a private road to five Pasadena homes with 150 tons of debris Monday night.
