I'm packing up my Calexico and Giant Sand and heading to Tucson....aside from stalking Howe Gelb, what should I do there?

Info about cool non-college bars and record stores and museums would be great.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 2 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

go to the ZIA record stores, take a trip to sedona, pet a prairie dog.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 2 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

are you taking your fabled couch with you?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 2 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm taking that motherfucker to the desert and dealing with it Gram Parsons style.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 2 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

come again!?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 2 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

are you MOVING there? Tucson is one of my favorite cities.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Zia's is okay for your mainstream music needs but nothing beats Toxic Ranch (man I hope it's still around).

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yaaaaaaaay: http://www.toxicranchrecords.com/

start here and they will tell you everything you need to know.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

WAH you never came to an LA FAP. So start some Arizona ones. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hey whoa I ain't movin, just visiting there for a week.

I am however cremating my couch.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Be sure to throw a trucker cap on the barbie.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh okay. well go hang around 4th avenue and visit Toxic Ranch, and go to the observatory on the U of A campus while you're in the neighborhood. Visit the nearest Bookmans. I didn't drink while I lived in the area, but I hear the Kon Tiki and the Meet Rack have good atmosphere.

Museums: The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. UA Center for Creative Photography. Just wander around and look at all the great murals. Go drive way out at night (I recommend Sells, east of town, because they turn their lights off at night) and see the best stars you've ever seen in your life. Start your trip in the afternoon and see San Xavier Del Bac on the way. Oh yeah, Old Tucson for hokey fun.

I know you're not hurting for Mexican food but Sonoran food is a little different that what you have on the coast, so eat up. El Charro is a favorite, and Bill Clinton ate at Mi Nidito in South Tucson.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

man I gotta get back to this city.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum seconded. I had no idea I would find a place like that so amazing. I recommend going either at beginning or end of day, when the light is low and the animals more active.

Hotel Congress: great place to stay, and a fine bar/club too. There's some interesting little shops and bars nearby along Congress.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Solar Culture is a fun place to see shows. Supposedly that hotel downtown where they have shows is cool, too.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you trust me with a gun???

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I need someone to pick off drifters along the side of the road, I can't very well do it whilst steering.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

this is gonna be one helluva road trip. *mwahahahahaha*

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This can't possibly end badly for us.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 3 May 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it should be noted that the Sonora Museum is not a typical museum, ie it's mostly outdoors. (right?)

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, oops. It's got some enclosed spaces through which you can walk (e.g. the hummingbird house), but most of it is outdoors.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

with bighorn sheep!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget the rattlesnakes and tarantulas and gila monsters!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and coatimundi and javelina!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Kitt Peak is the observatory near Sells that I was talking about. Even if you don't look through the telescope, the night sky is totally impressive, but do the telescope if you can. It costs extra for the night observation program; I've never done it but I bet it's super cool. The drive into Sells has one of the largest collections of roadside shrines that I've ever seen, very sad but a memorable sight.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Get yourself a sandwich at Greasy Tony's and then a coffee mocha shake at Bentleys. Both are on Speedway Blvd. Follow that up with a visit to P.D.Q. Records on Grant.

Get yourself a crappy old guitar at the Chicago Store and then go to an outdoor movie

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

god i miss the southwest :(

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man how could I forget PDQ? Emptier of my pockets! Holder of Cure flexidiscs! Wall of Whipped Cream And Other Delights!

Also, Eegee's

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

omg Tanque Verde Swap Meet! It was like christmas when I was a kid. I still remember the jingle from the old location. Ooh, speaking of bad Tucson advertising, does anyone remember the Gordo's guy?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Eeef you like chimichangas, I meand eef you REALLLLLLLY like chimichangas....Come to Gordo's Mexicateria, at the corner of Pantano road and Broadway."

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

this is not a recommendation for Gordo's by the way, it's not that good, just an endorsement of the Gordo's guy.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What a great time! I checked out the record stores that everyone mentioned and came away with a few CDs and LPs, ate at Greasy Tony's a couple of times, went to the Desert Museum and Kitt Peak, wandered around the aircraft graveyards, shot a couple rounds of golf, and took pics all over town. Aside from Lady Ms. Lurex punching out a cop because "I didn't like his face", it went smoothly. thanks everyone!

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yay! pics pls! I'm glad you found the aircraft graveyard on your own even though it's kinda hard to miss. ;)

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 8 May 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha they were hard to miss, but I was directed there...

GEAR!: Excuse me, I'm staying in Tucson and I was wondering which exit...

OLD FELLA: You gonna see those dead planes?!

GEAR!: Zuh???

OLD FELLA: Lots of them planes down there, just sittin'.

GEAR!: Abandoned planes?? I'm there! Thanks, kid! (flips him a nickel)

OLD FELLA: Hey thanks, mister!

I didn't get any pics of them, alas, but it was a sight.

So you're back now, Gear? And can come to the Chakifest? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it's because I haven't eaten anything since lunch and now it's midnight, but that photo is making me hungry. I'm imagining it to be really fancy sweet cookies with candied airplanes atop them, mmmm.

I might be able to make Chakifest, though I have plans all weekend. My friends are flaky motherfuckers so who knows?

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 8 May 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, screw yer flaky friends. Or alternately bring them along.

eleven months pass...
i get into tucson on may 16th! i'll be there until mid-august, i think. this is my summer vacation, if you will (except i'll be working).

reno sweeney (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

tucson's pretty amazing. i stayed at the hotel congress.

i think someone mentioned this musical instrument store before but i was told a good story about the place... apparently the second floor is closed to the public and is filled to the brim with vintage, never been used instruments. long time ago paul mccartney stopped in and offered them tons of money to purchase some of the equipment but they declined.

also, be sure to check out EL MINUTO. they've got tasty food.

other than that, all i did was nap on the comfy couch of wavelab studios, hang out in saguaro national park and spend lots of money at PDQ.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
something to keep in mind if you find yourself in tucson:

the best thai restaurant in town (so they say; i'm heading there for dinner in a bit) is in the same shopping center as feig's kosher market and deli. awww yeah.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Did you ever get bored? You're a big city fool like me. Was there enough to keep your mind stimulated or did you just chill?

Aceveda (admrl), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

i wasn't bored. when there was nothing to do i'd just read a book or watch a dvd or hang out online. which i do in los angeles too; it's not like i go out every night here.

Nico's (several locations)

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:28 (twelve years ago)

I've never been (cause of vegetarian) but ppl swear by the Sonoran Dog at El Guero Canelo. Been on the food channel more than once.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

yeah i was thinking El Guero Canelo. never had a sonoran dog.
have you (or anyone else) been to Saguaro Nat'l Park? trail recs?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:33 (twelve years ago)

ha fwiw "saguaro national park" is like 4 diff places. super cool, but if you're looking for something to do in a day, I'd recommend the desert museum

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:38 (twelve years ago)

google maps app is way confused by the multiple sections of the park. been wanting to check out the desert museum for a long time but I have a nat'l parks pass already so was leaning towards that hmmm. hotels are not cheap there this time of year! scottsdale 2 months ago was much cheaper, I'm surprised by that.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 9 February 2013 04:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah it's high season right now. Go in August and hotels are giving away rooms.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 07:37 (twelve years ago)

also if yr jonesing for a day hike my #1 advice would be skip saguaro Natnl park and do the Romero Pools trail in Coronado Natnl Forest-- 365 days a year it's certified fresh and this time of year there might be enough snow melt to swim in!!

#pr0tip do it on a full moon w/o flashlights

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 07:41 (twelve years ago)

you MIGHT even encounter a bighorn sheep (via endangered species protection)

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 07:42 (twelve years ago)

that trail sounds cool, even though I uh can't swim. thanks for the info!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 9 February 2013 07:55 (twelve years ago)

well at least you can dip your toes in a cool refreshing pool next to a majestic waterfall after a grueling desert mountain hike

damn az is so rad, fuck the haters

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 08:42 (twelve years ago)

tucson sounds great.

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:00 (twelve years ago)

also curious about flagstaff but that might be a little too.. disconnected for me.

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:02 (twelve years ago)

flagstaff is dope too, way more like a forgotten Colorado mountain mining town with an olde-timey downtown college vibe.

fun fact: Cecil B DeMile almost started making movies there but ditched it in favor of Hollywood

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:34 (twelve years ago)

also: speaking of forgotten mining towns: do not sleep on Bidbee!

and whatever you do, do not waste one second in Tombstone, regardless of how much you love the movie.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:37 (twelve years ago)

Bisbee*

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:37 (twelve years ago)

Bisbee has been on my list for while too, will make it there some time soon.
I live near Flagstaff now, it's a nice lil town. Decent size (though if you crave big city life, could become claustrophobic), good mix of long-time locals and transplants, liberal-minded island in sea of conservatism, really friendly people.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 9 February 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

oh shit just peeked out my window and it's a winter wonderland out there, the red rocks look so cool w/snow blanket. but after 2 hoursish driving I'll be in tshirt weather. AZ rad, fuck haters.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Saturday, 9 February 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

eight months pass...

I'll be in Tucson this weekend!

I've talked to people in Los Angeles about going, and a lot of them tell me it's a shit hole.

I don't care. I want to see as much as the southwest before I leave this region for good.

Plus, it looks cool. I'm into nature stuff.

So far, these are the places I will go to:

1. Sabino Canyon
2. Mt Lemmon
3. Space Museum

I'll be driving (from Los Angeles) and will be staying at the university hotel.

Anything specific to this time of year I should see? Or other must-dos and don'ts? I was just told not to drink and drive because the police are evil about that stuff there. Other tips welcome!

Thank you!

The Desert museum is great: http://www.desertmuseum.org

Get a Mocha shake at Bentley's on Speedway: http://www.bentleyscoffeehouse.com

4th Ave. is somewhat of a trendy vintage shop area but worth checking out.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 21 October 2013 20:31 (eleven years ago)

I am going to Tuscon soon! Tops on list is the desert museum (duh), the titan missile museum, and the airplane graveyard :)

I only have maybe two days, which is bummer but still, Tuscon! Maybe I can fine a crabbit!

quincie, Monday, 21 October 2013 20:42 (eleven years ago)

I mean find a crabbit. So not gonna fine a crabbit, that would be madness.

Wow, that place is very inexpensive. Might hit it up for brekkie, as well

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 21 October 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago)

I'll put it in the list, just in case, but ya, I might stick to a smaller radius, except when we go up to Oro Valley.

Hikes?

Looking at a map, I guess I won't be in Oro Valley, just by it, as I will be going to Mt Lemmon. For some reason, I thought Mt Lemmon was in Oro Valley. I'll also be going to Sabino Canyon but that is more east.

But yes, it'd be nice to do some hiking in Oro Valley.

c21m50nh3x460n, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago)

p sure i said this upthread but the romero pools hike in catalina state park is super underrated and depending on how much water is flowing probably even better than sabino canyon:

http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=212

you have to drive through oro valley to get there, and the view of mt lemmon and pusch ridge from oro valley is not only the best in tucson, its maybe the prettiest mountain view i've seen in my whole life (especially right before sunset):

Nice. I'll definitely go to Rigos, J.D.!

It'll be a good reason to drive out of the university/downtown area.

Do the police really stop people at random over there?

I'm not going to get pished but I also would like to enjoy a beer or two and have the peace of mind that I won't get a DUI.

gr8080, I'll look into Catalina State Park and see if I do one of the trails there or Sabino Canyon.

Thanks everyone!
