CHOOSE WISELY

Those not familiar with these two icons can visit the sinisterly titled Goofus and Gallant: The Project here.

CHOOSE WISELY

Ned, you wrote all those fighting fantasy books didn't you?

Patrick Kinghorn, Monday, 3 May 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, probably Gallant, but the issue with the first question is, is Oskar hot? Does he look awesome? Is he somebody you want to be friends with? Or does he look like a douche bag?
On a related note, I hear that judging a book by its cover is a really good way to pick out your reading material, too.

poop (poop), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you wrote all those fighting fantasy books didn't you?

Hey, someone had to.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. When I was a Highlights-reading tyke, I would always favor Gallant over Goofus and think Goofus was really, really annoying. Trouble was, pretty much every single male in my class was a Goofus, so I kept on wondering where the Gallants of the world existed. I'm just now starting to find a few Gallants.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Gallant is a fucking faggot.

adam (adam), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit harsh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sorry. I don't know where that came from.

adam (adam), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Goofus, since I could always identify with him.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hated Gallant and he brought out my violent tendencies.

But I hated Goofus too.

But Gallant was just such a little stuck-up prick.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"But Gallant was just such a little stuck-up prick."

Exactly.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Gallant is Rod-Flanders-annoying.

Ya know, Goofus & Gallant are actually based on real people. I've met Goofus, and yes he's a bit of a fuckup, in an endearing way. (He's about 60 now.)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gallant is Rod-Flanders-annoying.

You mean Ned, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Rod's the kid, so that makes more sense.

Dave225, I have no idea whether to believe you or not.

Mel's take is wise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Goofus has a bowl cut and Gallant has a butt cut.

I can't decide which is more annoying.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, it's true.. My wife used to work for Highlights magazine. It was like working in a time warp into the 1950's.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Gallant get beaten to death after chastising frat boys for their manners?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHA.

Sounds like I'd rather hang around Goofus these days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I always imagined Gallant's name to be pronounced in a French style.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I choose Goofus, because his name is freakin Goofus.

kirsten (kirsten), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY sorta

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

GALLANT ALL THE WAY. Nevermind I know the strip, you can tell by the title: GOOFUS IS FUCKED UP.

Oh, epilogue: Goofus died this year of cancer. Go ahead, make some jokes about "Gallant stays away from burnt toast, while Goofus smokes Camel nonfiltered under high-voltage power lines" ....

diedre mousedropping (Dave225), Thursday, 5 May 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Hail another year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

believe me or don't believe me, but my granddad was the illustrator for goofus & gallant. i used to pose for his sketches - he would snap polaroids of me yanking an electrical cord out of the outlet and then me politely gesturing to an adult that i would like her to please remove the cord for me. dave225, we have an interesting and tenuous connection.

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

This is a strange universe I have created in this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

Killy, I'm not going to dispute you, but I will say that I was reading G&G in Highlights back in the early eighties. You would've been how old in 1981?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Look at this. The people are these simple little wood people, but yet, look at how much time the artist spent on that fuckin' skunk.

Wait a minute. Who are these bastards?

http://www.highlightskids.com/Stories/GnG/images/h1GnGgoofusLft_f2.gif http://www.highlightskids.com/Stories/GnG/images/h1GnGgallantRht_f2.gif

My Goofus & Gallant were black-and-white sketch drawings, and were at least ten or eleven years old. Goofus was more like a miniature James Spader than he was a lil' Frankie Muniz.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

Hell. Maybe Killy was the model for those two after all.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's like the Hardy Boys, they mutate for the modern generation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

not to long ago we were at the dump store (everything's free) and they had ONE 70's-era Highlights from exactly when i was getting a subscription as a kid. 77/78, somewhere in there. i hadn't seen one since then. it was like proust and his fuckin' cookie. later, i graduated to Cricket.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, Cricket. I had a year of those, they ruled. I think that's where I first encounted Joan Aiken and Quentin Blake. (I almost said 'Quentin Crisp.')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've got a box full of Crickets in my closet right now. I'd say it contains 1979 - 1984. I've saved them all this time thinking that they'd be worth something. Recently checked on eBay, and they were going for 20¢ an issue. For fuck's sake.

dave's good arm (facsimile) (dave225.3), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

Until right now, I completely forgot that I had a Highlights magazine subscription. I wonder where the hell all those back issues ended up?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

The waiting room of my doctor's office.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

I think reading that comic was the first time I became aware of the concept of "strawman" -- though I couldn't verbalise it yet.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

haha, my pop-pop drew the timbertoes too. i never realized that other people had any idea these cartoons existed. my understanding of highlights magazine was that it was exclusively distributed to doctors' offices.

i preferred cricket, although i'm pretty sure i only read the comic strips that ran along the bottom.

PS: i wish my pop-pop could see those goofus & gallant mash-ups, he would luv them.

killy (baby lenin pin), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

i preferred cricket, although i'm pretty sure i only read the comic strips that ran along the bottom.

Oh, that was the key reason to read them. All the insects commenting on the stories and the like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

So let us ask this again.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

have a hunch we aren't getting the whole story on that killy anecdote

balls, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

I was just rereading that and wondering.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

Also, noting that this thread has a death announcement for Goofus = so sad.
