Working in the UK after years abroad - WhatdoIgottado?

I'm gonna be working in the UK this summer for the first time in yonks, and I've just been having a worrying conversation with my employer about tax codes, P45s and NI numbers. I mean, I certainly HAD all these things at some point, but I definitely don't have them now. Also, I'm gonna need a bank account in the UK for my wages, and I don't know if I can open one from abroad. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Cause it's scaring me.

P45 is no problem, you just get some form or other off your employer and hey presto. Someone somewhere must know your NI number. Banks are a pain in the arse, you need a ridiculous amount of ID "since September 11th". Halifax are the nicest, NatWest and Alliance and Leicester the nastiest.

Sorry I can't be more help, but don't be scared.

National Insurance info from tha Revenoo:

You can just fill in a P46 when you start yr job - employer will have them.

Bank account may be problematic. SGS to thread as she's recently done this...?

God, I need to have payed more attention to this sort of thing when I returned to the UK. Except I never had a NI Number to start with, and I've still not been given one!

You'll get stuck on an emergency tax code and have to fill out an R40 at the end of the year when you get a P60 to get the money back. Tax year end on april 5th.

What I said on another thread about bank accounts - "Have your last three months bank statements, proof of residency/studentship, proof of address and any references you can get hold of ready in paper form as soon as you go to a bank."

yeah, there's a whole thread on the bank account issue, but i'd try nationwide. they might not give you the most options at first, but it'll at least be somewhere you can get your work cheques deposited and do some internet banking and stuff.

It is quite likely that they will give you a crappy SOLO card instead of a lovely SWITCH card. This will make you a SOCIAL LEPER and a LAUGHING STOCK at Clinton Cards.

DO NOT BANK WITH NATWEST!

If you have parents living here it helps, as you will need a consistent home address. Or if you have a mate in the UK, get them to change the name of the person paying their leccy bill to you, it will make life a lot easier when opening an account.

Kate, surely you have an NI number (they usually put it on your pay packet). If not what is your tax code, if it is emergency you want to get claiming some cash back.

Blimey yes, there goes yr lack of drinking money right off the bat.

They do issue emergency NI numbers, distinguishable by the initial at the end of the number (either M or F depending on... you work it out).

Actually, I've just realised it's been 10 years since I worked at the local Benefits Agency!!!!! and this may no longer be the case.

Don't get me started. I've had a temporary NI number for five years now. In fact, two, counting the second one I was given by the Jobcentre for the two weeks I got benefits. Sigh.
