Curse you, New York, for sending RJG home with a broken rib! Well, maybe he doesn't quite have a broken rib, but he is certainly in pain. This thread is for commiserations, jokes, cursing New York, distractions, pity and get-well-soons.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

did he get hit by a plane there?

get well soon richbo

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

now i almost feel bad for punching him in the gut. almost.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

He fell off a rock on Coney Island (which, it must be said, was no one's fault but his own), and is now at the hospital getting x-rayed.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas for the RJG! He was not kidding when he mentioned how he felt after the trip.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think this thread is pitying enough.
That's better, Ned.
Get well soon, RJG!!

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Try Coney Island less, feel better soon.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor RJG. Is his quiff OK?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

His quiff is intact, but he is a broken man still.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I have heard stories about people breaking their ribs on purpose. For increased... flexibility.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Mr the Nipper, you are a card.

Beautiful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My extended period of hiding begins... NOW.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My computer just started printing out this thread for no good reason?!?!

Perhaps it too feels sorry for RJG.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Spontaneous electronic sympathy. It weeps for the master of the kilt and his woes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

poor RJG! Bet he won't be rock climbing again in a hurry.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

why is Coney Island called Coney Island, btw. Is it abounding in rabbits? or pine cones? Or Coneheads? This is just one of the silly things I worry about.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

is he getting mega pain killers?

i'd break a rib for a few days on morphine, i think...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

http://naid.sppsr.ucla.edu/coneyisland/articles/coneyname.htm

Glasgow truly is the sick man of Europe, what with N and RJG both having lurgy. I thought Rich's hurty shoulder was due to a lung infection caught on the three flights home.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

He didn't break it Leslie Ash style?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean "energetically"?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, poor precious widdle pet. precious should try to get a prescription for percodan (and send me some).
glasgow seems to be a hotbed of illness and injury at the moment... not sure if it's advisable to try under these conditions.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping the injury was Cyclone-related.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem could yet develop whiplash, just wait.

p.s. - m., what the hell is "lurgy"?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"lurgy" means an illness or malaise of a non-specific type.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's what that Radiohead song was about? Hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it is usually preceded by the word 'dreaded'.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

In severe cases, you'll hear the bell before you see the sufferer - this is your cue to cover your mouth and leg it.

penelope_111, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Richard! I hope that he feels better soon.

May the powerful spirit of the Boss watch over him and heal him.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

whereas the Radiohead song is your cue to cover your ears and leg it!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

aha. kind of like the mysterious, non-specific malaise that is always carrying off delicate heroines in my beloved victorian literature.

xpost

heh.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

why are radiohead writing songs about richard j g being sick?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

coz songs about Ally C being well would sound too happy?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Nonsense.

RJG's rib is probably not broken, and now it turns out it may have been Millar punching him that was the start of all this trouble!

N.B. he is not blaming Millar. And it was probably the rocks anyway. Foo.

Er...my little toe is a little sore. Just a little.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've broken my ribs twice. I bet lugging his suitcase home hurt like buggery. I bet he's less interested in sex. Um.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot comprehend you being less interested in sex.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

millar done broke another ilxor

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote we legally change his name to Ronnie James Gdio.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

now it turns out it may have been Millar punching him that was the start of all this trouble!

that occurred to me. he landed a pretty solid thwap!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes! Break a rid, change your name, as the old saying goes.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

rib even, rid's are very hard to break.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

JESUS GOD Richard I am so sorry but I warned you at the BBQ! I just didn't believe it'd be you.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's what that Radiohead song was about? Hm.

that's what every radiohead song is about!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No, sometimes they are about abstract feelings of annoyance or contemplative ruminations about considerations.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

carey says: R, I told you they were bruised and not to listen to that old razzle dazzle that likes to put things in other places where they sometimes do not fit. I am the medic here.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm dizzy.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the drugs don't seem to be helping, as much as they did, last night. I am sleepy.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because Dan is making you laugh. Humour + broken ribs = like tickling but with agonising pain.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet it isn't.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen wins : (((((((((((((((

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still confused as to your status; are you bruised or broken?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll never know. unless it gets worse.

the doctor (dave stewart) said there was no point in an x-ray, really, since, whether it/they was/were broken or just really badly bruised, there would be nothing, physically, that they could do to help it/them heal. so, he just gave me lots of pills.

come to think of it, though, he did say "is that okay?" but I was really tired and sore and wearing a gown, at the time, so I just nodded and said "yeah".

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't mess with a missionary man.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice save by RJG there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of RJG sitting in the doctor's and suddenly busting out Usher moves in response to a question.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Eeew.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

we had to pop his collar back into place after he fell too

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's called cracked (where there may be a break at some point, but there's a continuum of bone, so it's kept in place) as opposed to broken (where you now have two ribs instead of one). I get the impression that no-one is ever in any doubt if they've broken a rib.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But yes, it's dispiriting to go to a doctor and be told "we don't know, and we're not going to find out because it doesn't matter". Fortunately this is usually followed by "look! drugs!".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I think you are right re: 'cracked' and knowing about breaks.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah! Also best wishes and sympathy etc. I cracked a rib a few years back, and the pain/nausea is just shite.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

:-( No cartwheels for RJG. :-(

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Cracked sounds so much worse! I suppose it's the onomatopoeia, makes you feel it almost.

Hope tomorrow is kinder to you, pain-wise, RJG.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

more drugs, now.

BRING ME TO RELAX

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Read a thread by some of your 'favorite' posters -- I need not name names -- and you'll fall pleasantly into a stupor.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it one of those gowns that is kept together by a couple of ties at the back and you have to pull it together to stop your bare ass being on display?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"stop"

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it was one of those.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

From my totally non-professional-medical book of advice..... My friend broke a couple ribs once. It's one of those things that they can't do nothing for. Just gotta wait for them to heal together.

Sucks dude.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)
