Using your cell phone in another country

I have a fairly new Sony-Ericsson cell phone with a SIM chip, which is unlocked. i'm going to europe in june and heard i can easily buy a prepaid SIM chip and pop it in my phone....but then I also heard that wireless companies have gotten hip to this and have created extra security measures (what exactly, i don't know).

has anyone done this before?

Is it a tri-band phone?

When I want to Prague my phone personally welcomed me to the Czech Republic.

i'm not sure if it's tri-band. i have a sony-ericsson T616...i didn't see anything in the web spec about whether or not it's tri-band.
here's the weblink for it on the sony-ericsson page http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp1_loader&php=php1_10076&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10076

assuming your phone is a tri-band, you shouldn't have a problem getting your sim card swapped.

sweet!

so generally, are european cellular companies cool with selling prepaid SIM chips for phones that aren't purchased through them, or are they as uptight about this as american companies?

in other words, should i try and go to those slightly dogdy indpendent cell phone shops, as opposed to a france telecom or alcatel store?

thanks so much, by the way

i've never switched a chip in france, so i can't offer you country-specific information. offhand, i'd say you should go to a reputable-looking shop that's not affiliated with any one brand. someone will be able to advise you as to which service will be the best for you.
