i think the british overrated him. i remember an away game against poland where he kept on mishitting clearances straight to the polish striker. after that i always had my reservations. not to mention the badly-timed bloopers (nayim and ronaldinho).

of course, some great contributions in euro 96. i'd call him a very good goalie, but not a great one.

superb voice.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

PONYTAILED LUMBERING MISHAP!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

He was in my dream last night for some reason.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as good as Chris Woods.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Woods rocked.

Which is not a good thing for a keeper to do.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

He is the new face of Curries. And you thought it couldn't get any worse than Linda Barker!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

shame the halfway line is just out of shot

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it is a great shame Seaman had to end his international career with that ghastly revisit of this scenario at the World Cup - he cried bitterly afterwards apparently and you can't blame him. still that save against Sheff Utd in the semi-final last year was as good as anything else he'd ever done.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i forgot that save! incredible. old safe hands, indeeeeeeeeeeed

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That Sheffield United save was some Mr Tickle shit, indeed.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Great save in the 5-1 Germany game when the score was 1-1. But you can't excuse those multi-coloured tops he wore in the 90's.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he was a very good keeper, but I guess I wouldn't put him in the Shilton bracket, or alongside Banks. That's not such a bad thing, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't Shilton over-rated tho?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen shilton or banks play but easily one of the great goalkeepers of our time. And yes, people make the odd mistake.

x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i've just remembered Shilton remains technically the most famous person i've ever interviewed and he was a lovely bloke and i won't hear a word against him

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Shilton was the second best English keeper in my lifetime. Seaman might be third, but Clemence might beat him.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

they are the only England goalkeepers from before 1990 i can name

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(plus Banks obv)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Corrigan! Didn;t Phil Parkes play once for England?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the british overrated him

National hero in Scotland after the 2002 World Cup, but I would hardly say over-rated...

King Dud of Dudsville on They Think It's All Over. He's that bad, it would be better if Lineker came back.
