Never smoked in my life. Always had other things to spend money on. So, what have I missed? Apart from a cure for colitis?

The irrefutable, indefinably seething pleasure that comes from sucking on something so small and dangerous.

a bond with strangers as you stand outside. sucking.

Looking sort of dodgy

Addiction can be reassuring at times. A form of faith perhaps, but one based on the slightest of chemical rushes and the staving off of minor mental tribulations.

i think one is stronger for having known addiction.

although i think my meaning of 'stronger' there is a little vague.

only thing I've ever smoked is the illegal stuff.

I like cigars now.

i smoked a pipe last summer, when i was trying (and failing) to give up cigarettes. I just remember being outside my work on a boiling hot day in the city centre smoking a pip and wearing a duffel cup and looking like the oddest thing....

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

duffel coat, i should say....

Something to cling to.

It really is crappacious in so many ways.
Yes I am a reformed smoker, luckily it wasn't a long addiction
(six years). I simply worked out all my reasons for smoking, realised I didn't need fags to satisfy those particular needs, and stopped. I'm just as nervy as ever, but now I kind of have an addiction to not smoking, so.
(Plus I was getting headaches off them, so there was an urgency to
quitting).

It makes your lungs go "OWIE-ahhhhhh...."

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

No idea, on account of the fact that I didn't go to Eton.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like having a friend who's always there for you and never lets you down.

unless you don't have any that is*

saza bob, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, smoking cures colitis?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Dunhills are only $5 now at the corner liquor store... that's what everything costs. So I can be a classy Hunter Thompson type and smoke Dunhill's now.
