Just finished reading this, thought it was really good. Anyone else read it?

Sparkle (Davel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but i want to!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. I thought it was really good to. It was sad when the dog died.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

well, no reason to read that book now.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, both my wife and I read it. Wonderful book. My wife used to work with autistics and was quite impressed.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a quick, easy read, and very engaging.

A neighbour of mine has an autistic teenage son, and (though this sounds ungracious of me) I've always been a bit reticent about talking to him because he's so difficult to understand and so unpredictable. Reading this book really helped me understand things better from his perspective.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I read it a couple of months ago. Interesting-ish, but I got a bit bored towards the end. I admire the author's discipline in sticking with the style (which can't have been too easy).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's quite good. it's not as good as all that, but it's quite good.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i would say pretty good. i am attempting to read it to my mother

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My hint Alang, Shout. She lives over two hundred miles away.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
I got this for my younger sister for Christmas and she's already finished it and gave it the thumbs up. Funnily enough my Dad also got it for me and I'm hooked. Really interesting style - Mark Haddon must really know his onions. It made me laugh (though there are no jokes in it) and there were some genuinely moving and sad parts but all in all a fantastic read.

He's married to Sos E|tis too! I just found that out. *Swoon*, a bit.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Bonus question: What'cha doing tomorrow then G?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Kee-YUTE Victorian lecturer crush!

I'm not sure actually! I was thinking of going to Hitchin and seeing AUTOFIRE, is this a good idea? I hear they're rubbish.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Should I phone Holly btw? She is this insane 40ish flake-woman who gave me a lift back from Brigtonish fields once, she would know where the parties were though.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

They're alright I guess... but if you wanna go, I can meet you on the train down as I finish work at 4:30. You can come over to mine for a quick bite and join us for the setup and early drinks then we'll go up to London and go raving. Anyway, I'll text you the details.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

That's down to you man.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Can you get me some? I'll pay you back!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I love how this thread has no longer anything to do with Mark Haddon's best-selling Whitbread award about a child with Asperger's.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Mark Haddon? I would have said Arthur Conan Doyle or James Thurber!

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 30 December 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

OK! These are yours now:

Wicka wicka wah! Cheers!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really like this book, sorry chaps.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:11 (twenty years ago)

No worries! I like Camden, I went to oddballz and messed up magic tricks for an hour, it was good times.

(Haven't got your text, but I'll be on the 16.50-arriving train)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

rock on. I'll meet you on it. Remember - we're going to Letchworth first, not Hitchin. Ah well, you got my number so text me before you get there.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

That was fun!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Filthy scallies plz return my wallet, Kel's passport and DL's jumper, kthx. You pigfuckers.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Also, BOREDOMS!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

No, wait! I just found that! Sweet.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I liked it and thought it was very perceptive (and painfully hitting-home in some of the bits about family life).

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Maria OTM! The bit where his Dad breaks down and confesses all seemed so perfectly ironic and home-hitting it made me shed a tear.

Gravel: Yes it was ace man - we all had a great time. Those pesky scallies when I catch up with them why I'll..!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 2 January 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Track 7 on NOIZEMANIA sounds like a noize belle & sebastian! That's my favourite so far.

Are we still doing that top 10 exchange?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

This thread also reminds me that I haven't read a work of fiction for like a month, wtf? I'm meant to be doing a literature degree.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

i read it. i thought it was pretty good until about exactly halfway through the book (those who've read it probably know what i'm talking about) and then it went completely to shit. the last line especially was unforgiveable.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Gravel - I only listened to that CD once before passing it to you so I don't know which track it is. TBH I don't think all the tracks are noise... how does it go?

I'll knock up that top 10 soon.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

It's the one that starts with an acoustic gutiar and builds into trumpets over fuzz, seriously lovely.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 2 January 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

I think that might be OOIOO who are a Boredoms spin off project. If you like that kind of thing then promise me you'll download Giant Steps by the Boo Radleys.

We need a seperate thread innit.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 2 January 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

uh yeah

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 2 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

well sorry, tough.

Gravel, I just realised that track may well actually be a song called "Spaniard" by the Boo Radleys. Was it kind of shoegazey with bull-fighting trumpets?
