to work in urban outfitters record store!???!!!

Should I brush my hair left or right?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what bands can I say I like????

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about Ireland -- but if it was the U.S. I'd say something like Modest Mouse or Bright Eyes (ugh).

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i would gel your hair up in a designedly messy fashion.

say you like akufen and the no neck blues band.

look at their foreheads and not their eyes.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even know urban outfitters had record stores, so what do I know?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck

CAss (CAss), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If possible, wear a black turtleneck and spike your hair straight up. Make sure you tell them that you like obscure releases like (make up band name and convoluted back-story; promise to play it if hired).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like we're trying to camoflauge the golf raver as he moves into enemy territory.

Good luck, obv!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wear mirrored sunglasses, a Slayer t-shirt, smoke and generally act like a shit.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck. I had a job interview this morning!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh over here it's a dance record shop, and not totally indie in terms of clothes either. It's kind of getting harder to distinguish between "dance" and "indie" clothes though I guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Be like the Weatherall.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry -- over here urban outfitters is uber-indie.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

EVEN BETTER: wear a pacifier around your neck when you go to the interview and claim to be straight-edge! (NB: This might actually be bad advice.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It might help that one of the interviewers is one of my best friends!

x-post a military moustache??? maybe!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Encompass the Murphy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

be urself

CAss (CAss), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it might take me 4 years to grow though, feel the felix.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Claim the crown from the Clarke.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Could you not just ask Phil? (xpost)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It might help that one of the interviewers is one of my best friends!

Then what are you worrying about! Just play it cool and don't vomit on the other interviewers' shoes or whatever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It might help that one of the interviewers is one of my best friends!

HAHAHA! In that case, my advice is: Don't drool on your interviewer and don't punch anyone in the crotch.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only worried because this would be the first job I'd ever have which I am already skilled in and which I would enjoy. I sort of feel it's a formality and I have the job but I don't want to just assume, because the disappointment if I don't get it would be big!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Alternately, get them online and show them this:

Taking Sides: Pasties vs Pasties

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

they have that on a t-shirt I'm sure Dan

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

take an e

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

for the party afterwards?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

to attain genuine empathy

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck btw!

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Pringle, you fool.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard about this guy who was known as pringle because of his similarity to the crisp packet.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the pringle duck lips/beak and wear flippers, you'll walk it (kinda)

penelope_111, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the job!

Just have to finally confirm but I was given hours and a start date and shown how to do stuff.

HOORAY!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

well done ronan!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Woohah! Well done Mr F. Now you can swap dumb-record-buyer stories with Jess.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I will begin honing my screw face

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

so what records do they sell in an urban outfitters?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

in this one, mostly dj mixes on cd, some indie and dance artist albums, and some dance 12 inches. The stock is sort of low at the moment I think. It is a dance shop though, that'd be the main market.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Now can you sneak Sister Ray onto the stereo?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you won't have to worry about the owners playing Dido like at Jess's store.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

If you sneaked in the Rabbit In The Moon remix of "Fear", would you get fired?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for the Ronan! Stream all ILXORs radio shows.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry -- over here urban outfitters is uber-indie.

I may not have much cred as an old preppie liberal, but calling Urban Outfitters 'indie' when it's owner Richard Haynes and "his wife have contributed $13,150 to (Senator Rick) Santorum and Santorum's Political Action Committee over the years," seems a little far-fetched.

http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/archives/article.asp?ArtID=5725

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, because there's absolutely nothing indie-hipster about its clothing line, household products, or book selection.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the owners are ultra-conservative (one of the many reasons for not shopping there), but the store presents itself as being indie/hipsterish and someone wanting to work there would probably have to fit in with that identity.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't dispute that Nicole, but I find it deplorable.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, so what was your bone of contention?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That the indie-hipster ethos is being co-opted for money by a right-wing dick. How indie-hipster is it to put profits in Haynes' pocket which he will then give to, not just Republicans, but to Santorum, one of the most outspoken homophobes in the country?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So basically you were looking for a place to grind your axe and Nicole's words looked enough like a whetstone that you didn't actually care what she said?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

My only advice:

WEAR A BIG VIKING HELMET!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There really isn't a person alive today who wouldn't benefit from a viking helmet.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the indie-hipster lifestyle necessarily have a specific political attitude?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I will put aside my semantic hat in favor of a viking hat.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

There really isn't a person alive today who wouldn't benefit from a viking helmet.

Amen to that!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

when it's owner Richard Haynes and "his wife have contributed $13,150 to (Senator Rick) Santorum and Santorum's Political Action Committee over the years," seems a little far-fetched.

Given Sen. Santorum's post-Savage Love infamy, perhaps he made the contributions ironically?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

First off, I have been rude and ranted before wishing Ronan luck. As to the Viking helmet advice, the Vikings did found Dublin so you might get points for that.

Does the indie-hipster lifestyle necessarily have a specific political attitude?

Perhaps not, but I do.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was about to make a comment about abject stupidity masquerading as irnoy falling right in line with indie-hipsterism but then I realized exactly how assholish that sounds. I really need a viking hat.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I'd like to blurt out that I think my job interview on Monday (well, it was more like two interviews, 45 minutes of informational sessions and an hour of QA testing) went pretty well and I'm just waiting to hear back now.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah for Jordan! All will be well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what questions did they ask you this time Jordan?

(oh yeah, congrats to Ronan and all that)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get my job. :/ now I am directionless and a bit sad.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh yeah congrats Jordan too, hopefully)

Sorry to hear that Cozen. What job were you going for?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No riddles, unfortunately. Unless you count stuff like "have you ever had a conflict with a co-worker, and if so how did you deal with it?"

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Cozen, maybe that's just a sign that something better will come along soon.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Or it might be a sign that you're supposed to start a band!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a sign, as I have found. I just got offered a consultancy from a maaaaajor fashion client and it's doing my head in because they've just said 'cost the job' and I have never done anything like this before. It's going to make me more money than I'd have earned from the (art-mag) job I near-missed, and I wouldn't have to take flak for disorganised publisher (they're all like that, but this one was worse).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations Suzy! That sounds great.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What does 'cost the job' mean?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

cost the job = name your price?

well done suzy

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell them 80K!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

One million...K!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it ws for the sc0ttish law c0mmission. I was approved by the board (i.e. I am good enough and will get a job if any further posts come up w.out further interview) but wasn't within the 'highest of the competition.' I felt really good about the interview as well. oh well. it's just the next couple of years were kinda structured round it and I'm not really sure there are any other jobs I'd like to do, nevermind love to do.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That sucks cozen -- maybe they'll have another post available soon?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, I doubt it. but yeah - sucks. I'll just have to find something else to do. maybe this means I can get off my backside and study at LSE.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

FBI

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

sniper.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Way off-topic by now, but does indie-hipster in the states mean that you will be mostly into indie music? Here it's as much if not more likely to be dancey stuff (the shop in Urban, Carbon Records, is predominately dance).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew otm. Here, indie people are like monks.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for you Ronan - sorry not to say earlier - but will it give you writing time?

Well, with my thing, after some consultation I'm still sans cleu, but have to talk to the woman who asked me to do this tomorrow just to clarify the structure she's after and THEN ring someone I know who also requires this kind of service from time to time and ask her how much she pays for it (subtle self-promotion). She should give me sound advice in any case, and the fashion woman came to me through a cool friend.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally Suzy, the boss is one of my best friends, I think I do 24 hours in a week or so, plenty time for writing. I managed to write a bit last summer when working 9-5 in a bank, so it should be cool this time around. I love the idea of having lots of long days off, obviously, lazy waster that I am.

Congratulations to you too, sounds really exciting, and lucrative of course.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, sorry ro, congratulations!!!! *jealous jealous* :)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It was really cool. Just before the bank holiday my friend who'd been doing maternity cover at Harper's and Queen and who had been raiding my numbers as a result for unorthodox subjects told me she'd mentioned me to this woman and hoped I didn't mind her passing on my number. Next day I get the call inviting me to posh lunch at Hakkasan guy's dim sum palace (v. nice) and she gave me the lowdown at lunch yesterday. Today I got the brief biked over and apparently I have to sit there on a cloud dreaming up concepts or something. Hmmm.

Other news coming but will be relevant, see former Emap mentor for details.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I anticipate increasingly amusing (=suicidal) stories from Ronan about a different person each day coming up to him and asking if they sell anything by Dido.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You're organising some, AREN'T YOU?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

nah I'm going to love this job!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's that group that had a hit with "Rose Royce(?)"?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)
