I thought the Spurs played sloppily in the 4th quarter, so I'm hoping they'll regain their focus and drive once they head on over to L.A.
― Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)
What, because he didn't learn 100 neato tricks to do on the court to impress the cameras, and simply goes about his game without flash, just effectively doing his job better than most anybody else can, he's not worth mentioning? He's only one of the better players in the league right now. Who cares how "boring" his style is. But this person still keeps saying it to this day.
LA fans will probably claim, if they lose this series, that it was all Kobe's trial that did it, though.

The Kings want to finally get what they thought they should have had in 2002, the T-Wolves want to cap off their most successful season in franchise history with a ring, and the Spurs repeating would mean talk of the Laker dynasty would go from a light murmur (them saying last year merely 'interrupted' their dynasty) to a dull whisper.

I remember when the Magic (I used to be a rabid Magic fan, I was there from the inagural season until about 1997 when I gave up on the NBA) went to the finals that one year, they had a great starting FIVE. Not everybody was all-star worthy, but they weren't doormats, either. Now you'd be shocked to find three players in one starting lineup who did anything but flop around.

exactly. unless you are jordan, and even he needed help, you need good roleplayers. they are few and far between right now- i think detroit and indiana have all of them in the east right now. (nets kind of used to when lucious harris or bench scrubs would actually step up occasionally)

Another thing I'm impressed by -- the Lakers themselves aren't doing a heck of a lot of trash talking. Sure, there have been those few words said, but those were to be expected. I don't know how they managed to do it, but they've actually become something of a class team. And even Phil Jackson is downright mature compared to that idiotic clown Mark Cuban. Now only if they can solve the issue of the supremely immature Times sports columnists....
xp: You know, any complaints about how the NBA is in a weak position or that the Spurs are "fairly weak" strikes me as criticism coming from people who refuse to give the Spurs their due, no matter what they end up doing. Because I could've sworn the Spurs organization had made great strides in improving themselves and their game for all except for maybe this year, when I was a bit bothered by the huge lineup shuffle.
also, dee, i would say the la press definitely notices san antonio, it's just this season they got pushed to topic #4 (1 kobe drama, 2 shaq-kobe and general team drama, 3 sacramento rivalry, 4 s.a. rivalry).
*snort* I would say, except it all comes back to us as being purely trash talk of the worst order, e.g. "S.A. is a rundown, ugly, one-horse town filled with idiots and you should avoid it at all costs". I was actually thinking more along the lines of the national press people; maybe I should've clarified that.

parker is a great player and they have fantastic roleplayers- even most of the roster turnover was done cannily, ie horry replaces kerr and etc.
― rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)
On a side note, the Magic are in horrible shape. They used to be the class of this city, now nobody gives a fuck about them. At games this season, they were taping advertisement papers on seats trying to solicit people to purchase ticket plans. Sometimes the papers outnumbered the fans, it seemed. I even got a phone call from the Orlando Magic after going to a game, trying to book me a 15 game package. They must be desparate to sell seats now.
The best Magic-heat game I saw live, though, was in 1993 when Greg Kite started fighting Rony Seikaly.

And I cannot stand the Mavericks. I view them as the Spurs' worst opponents who are unfortunately taking their cues from their truly uncivilized owner. If the Mavericks roster wasn't as nasty as it is, I wouldn't be as bothered by them, but heck, I've seen more class on Kobe's right ear lobe than in the whole of this team's roster.

Actually, I'm collapsing under the weight of being this confrontational and mean-spirited (sorry, but this really isn't my style), so I'll do a big cop-out routine and say that maybe my opinions were formed by the actions of a handful of members of the team in question as well as what its owner has been like (another sorry -- I will never be able to view him in a positive light), as well as the fact that the rivalry between this team and the team I'm a supporter of is such an intense one. So sorry to disappoint you like this, but <whine> I wanna go back to being happy and accentuating the positive now! Waah. </whine>
(Ha. You've already made up your mind about me, most prob.)
