Brits send 'U R dumped' txt msgs

LONDON (Reuters) -- Nearly one in 10 Britons admit to dumping their partner by cell phone text message rather than breaking the news face-to-face, according to a survey.

While a third of those polled said they had had an argument by text, nearly half admitted flirting by cell phone message.

Of the 771 Britons aged over 15 polled by market research firm NOP for Swiss software company Sicap, 38 percent confessed to reading their partner's private messages.

I know several people who have been the recipient or instigator of this activity. The heartless bastards with intimacy issues that pass for my friends sometimes...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I got broken up with online, but that was more due to the fact that the girlfriend just happened to be there at that moment and she had already told me "we needed to talk, call me".

Still sucked though :)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

never been dumped by text, but i did date a girl who split up with me in person a few times, and who would send text messages along the lines of "I was wrong, I can't live without you and I love you with all my heart" as my train neared 30 minutes away from where she lived.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i was the recipient of a "it's not working out" type text. i knew it was coming and wasn't too bothered about it, but it sucked nonetheless. bonus points for it being so timely and 21st century and all that, i suppose...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

and i recently tried to explain/apologise for some stupid behaviour on my part via text, and it is damn near impossible...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

carrying on any relationship via email/SMS/chat is completely pointless and impossible.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

As I said elsewhere I was dumped by text, totally out of the blue aswell, it was pretty bad. I'm still friends with the person but I think I'll always remember the pure emotional cowardice of it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

-- ipsofacto (heyniceti...), May 6th, 2004

i have a fine business relationship with this company i'm doing now via email.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i find it so damn hard to express myself properly in a text message. it's very frustrating. i prefer email! oh yeah, there's the whole "talking in person" thing too, i suppose...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"[pssst, dan, check yr mail]"

Jeez, db, call him up, take him out for coffee, and let him down easy.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

is it not sometimes more painful for BOTH parties for the break-up to occur face-to-face tho?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I can imagine this being pretty satisfying if the person in question has fucked them over and you want to dump them in the most ignominious way possible.

Otherwise, colossal dud.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never done it myself, or had it done to me. But a friend of mine did once break up with her boyfriend using my PC.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've once dumped someone with a letter. I sent a block of chocolate, six dollars and a note saying 'don't call me' it was gutless.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

6 dollars?!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i mentioned that i got dumped by text recently (a first both for getting dumped and getting dumped by text, so it was an interesting day)

to be fair, he was slightly upset about the other two guys i was dating at the time, and decided it wasn't worth it. so not quite as heartless as others.

i have also flirted and fought by text in the last two days.

god, i feel so modern...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ah everyone flirts by text. though last week I got drunk and flirted by text and gave someone totally the wrong idea!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yes u bstd u r stll nt frgivn eithah

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I owed him six dollars and he was really cheap and I didn't want to owe him anything or give any even vague excuse for him to contact me. The chocolate was because i ate some of his chocolate and he got all upset.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

My problem is I hate doing the short form thingys, so I spend ages trying to write stuff out properly, and my phone is so fucking tiny and the keys are shit - I hate it. i shld lrn 2 b lke u txt kds omg wft

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

christ i can't even write out WTF properly. i should be expelled from ILX...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Writing like prince allows 1 2 feel very modern.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I only learned how to use my text dictionary a couple of months ago and it's a real champion. If you've got one, learn.. it's not as hard as you think.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate short form aswell, it makes me feel stupid. I respect people who send me texts in full form.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have started, conducted and finished entire relationships by txt/email/msn messenger in the past. It ain't pretty, but at least it's better thought out than hopelessly ejaculated ill-conceived spoken words.

Actually, I'm kinda starting to see the benefits of, y'know, conversation an' that again. Phew.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

is the whole short/long form preference something corresponding to age? i really don't like the short stuff either.

charlie-- how does one conduct an entire relationship by text? sounds, um, interesting.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I get confused and a bit embarrassed when friends who're my age text me with the whole "hi m8 u comin 2 pub 2nite c u l8a" schtick - it makes me think a 14 year-old's nicked his mobile.

I do my level best to write long-form as much as possible, but sometimes I'm feeling mean and don't want to spill over into a second text and so go back through what I've written and abbreviate accordingly. I feel bad insodoing, however.

charlie-- how does one conduct an entire relationship by text? sounds, um, interesting.

Well, not solely by text, but certainly predominantly on msn messenger. I was young and foolish and, well, we didn't get to see eqch other as much as we would've wanted. That said, much fun can be had textually, as that footballer chap has discovered to his possible cost...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

IT MAKES ME THINK PEOPLE ARE THICK WHEN THEY SEND TEXTS IN ALL CAPS

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

pros: designed to be used one-handed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do full form texts, but have no one to dump!

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello everyone, newbie here... Don't your phones have predictive text? I always just use that and then follow CharlieNo4's idea of abv. things if I run out of space! It takes me longer to write shorter, I find...

Flameproof, Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I do use the predictive text/dictonary thing, I'm pretty fast at texting, and I STILL find it tedious.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

My former flatmate just texted me in short form and ALL CAPS and she is 38 years old. Go figure.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate predictive text, it messes with my flow.

paul mccartney's band?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

predictive text, bah. i would never dump anyone via text, but sometimes send messages to people to avoid dealing with them. if i have to back out of plans or otherwise disappoint someone and i don't want to get scolded, then i'll send a text to avoid the hassle.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I dumped someone by post once. But as I never saw them and they didn't have a phone it was the only way to to do it. Well... I could have phoned them at work, but that would have been mean.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Predictive text could be problematic in and of itself:

"'It's muds'? What does that mean? You don't want me to shit on you, do you?"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my gf says she has done this before. 'it wasn't a real relationship.'

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't exactly do this, but my last girlfriend and I ended things amicably with two text messages. it felt weird as that was a first for me.
