Newbies! Introduce Yourselves!

In response made to a comment dropped in Tom's ILE Suggestion Box:

If you're new-ish around these parts, and wish to formally introduce yourself, get to it! Those ubiquitous w/ ILE need not reply (unless you're going to be cheeky and funny; then it's OK).

David Raposa, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This was an earlier Introduce Yourselves thread

Ed, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, but that's an OLD thread. This is a NEW thread. Therein lies the difference.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the word 'newbie'. It makes me want to throw up.

Nick, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

newbie newbie newbie

n. u. bee, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What would you suggest instead then Nick? New person sounds too formal (or too much like an advert - 'I felt like a whole new person once I discovered ILE')

Andrew L, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

statscock jr?

Nick, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Temporally Challenged? Residentially Challenged?

WHERE ARE YOU, NEW PEOPLE! Also - tell us your favorite food, favorite piece of clothing, and most hated celebrity.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm newbie enough that I'm not in the old thread. I am a girl and I live in Melbourne and I like to talk about sex but not actually do it. I am very opinionated and can be belligerent and insensitive. Strangely enough, no one here has told me they hate me yet. I'm shy deep down inside though no one believes it and everyone in real life thinks I'm a bit mad. I hate myself physically but am totally entranced by my image too. I have a page of just me at http://www25.brinkster.com/toraneko/default.asp where I put up pictures I don't like as well as ones I do.

toraneko, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, favourite food is rice, favourite vegetable is sweet potato. Favourite clothing is fishnet stockings or black lycra. Favourite topic of conversation is *ME* or the virtues of microwaves.

toraneko, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was it DG who said its better when people drift into seeming like they've been here for ages anyway. As a relatively new ILxer I have to concur that this is better. Also more fun when you notice people begin hating you. Or liking you obviously.

Ronan, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm also relatively newbie newbie newbie newbie too. i'm sorry for all the geek threads, sorry for all the telly chatter, sorry for constantly being flip, sorry for berating fatnick about his paltry karaoke attempts.

i'm over the average age here by a good chunk (over 30 will do you), i am recently singled and a little sad about that. i am also v glad to find people who at least know what i'm talking about.

I actually find KoC pub to be OK, and a good central point to meet me friends. i gather it's seen as falling on bad times. ta, again to DG for saying hi at said pub -- i look fwd to seeing IL*ers again IRL.

Wuv, alan.

PS party hard

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

toraneko - yr a grrl? owah...shit, how's that, you thought i was a grl, i thought you were a guy...weird.

Geoff, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, Toraneko (mind if I call you Tora?) - you've already exceeded the daily bandwidth allocated for your website! That's unreal.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you have just reminded me, torenako, that I must cook sweet potato chips and crisps this week

Ed, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

microwaces ae evil though, the technology to make food soggy in 30 seconds.

Ed, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm new, and also old (by average here) at 30. I'm in Yorkshire trying to finish a phd and lurking on ILx is the most entertaining prevarication I've yet found. It seemed creepy and vampiric to lurk, so I posted a bit, but I suppose it could be equally creepy, and rude, to gatecrash.

Favourite food: the last really good thing I had was cracked roasted potatoes with cumin seeds and feta crumbled over. Favourite item of clothing: cloche hat, stripey mittens.

So, hello, and thank you David for the welcoming committee.

Ellie, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(cutting and pasting from original newbies thread)

Me Brian. Me 29. Me almost 30 -- cum December 6.

I used to be now FT editor Ned Raggett's roommate, until I moved here to Seattle in February 2001. Like Ned, I was a college radio DJ at KUCI in Orange County for several years. Occupation: video game programmer. Favorite bands of the moment: Pinback, Hochenkeit, Andrew WK (ducks), Amon Duul II, Sientific American...

Side interests: Making music... indie/droney stuff and electronic stuff. Also DJing all sorts of dance music.. hip hop/experimental/weirder techy house/80s/whatevah

No personal home page... but here's a recent mix CD I made, as well as a few electronic tracks I did for some tributes. And here's what I look like... (..and just so other IL*'ers won't give me grief about it. Yes... the goatee is now gone.)

I should have done this a long time ago. Sorry.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm new, and also old (by average here) at 30

Not sure if that's true, Ellie... Well, I think we established by science that the average age was 27, so you're not far off anyway.

Hello, anyway. I like what you've posted so far. But you seem to be misinformed about the meaning of prevaricate. It doesn't mean to waste time or procrastinate, y'know. Everyone seems to think it does though, so maybe dictionaries will start saying it does too.

Nick, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello, I'm Mark (haven't I already done this?), I'm *the average age* apparently. I like talking about me, Nick Dastoor, and Nick Dastoor's lovely balls. I look passable in lycra but poor in fishnets. I spend more time posting on a financial community than anywhere else. I always begin my sentences with the word "I". I sometimes end them with it too. I have a tendency to avoid clique-slang like the plague, but secretly envy people who can use it unselfconsciously. I know and like at least a dozen people who post here. Especially Nick Dastoor, and his lovely balls.

Mark

(sorry Nick - I bet you thought this sordid episode was in the past)

Markx, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re prevaricate: I KNEW THAT (blushes furiously).

Actually you're right, technically I meant procrastinate, but in a sneaky way I can have prevaricate too, as in 'quibbling' or 'equivocating'. I sit here at the desk and i _mean_ to finish chapter 5, and then I think, just a little look at the interweb won't hurt, and my better self looks disapproving, and so it goes on. See, I am evading or quibbling with what I know to be the right thing to do, and I do that by procrastinating. I am, in a very real sense, only cheating myself.

Ellie, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Especially Nick Dastoor, and his lovely balls.

PERVERT. This is a sign of appreciation. Welcome! And to all new people I haven't said hi to yet.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm new and oldish. Always have lived in Southern California, love it more and more. Happy to answer any questions on US magazine subscription/newsstand marketing. Kinks, Prince, Loud Family, and everything else that's good. Wildly grateful to have found boards with so many sharpies with so much taste.

dan, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another SoCal person, v. nice (I'm in OC, Arthur's in LA, I forget who else we have of the regulars here in the area, but our contingent seems pretty small in comparison to NYC, London and of course Dunedin).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi, nice to meet you all. My favourite band is the Carpenters. Also, Brian Wilson is playing in London next January. Yay!!!

james, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hiya Dan, so glad you could make it.

Arthur, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have red fishnets on and I believe my shirt is lycra (it is multicolored). I fit in so well!

Maria, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R a newbie. My favourite food is BEEF, or failing that a nice hot chicken tandoori of some description - NO CHICKPEAS, katie...or tofu for that matter! My favourite piece of clothing is my belt, cos it stops my trousers falling around my ankles, and my most hated celebrity is nobody because how can you hate people who are celebrities and thus so adored by the general populous, but other than that it would have to be JAMIE HOLMAN or maybe Nina Myskow or anyone American.

Yes, definitely :)

I R got homepage which can be worked out from my email address which has secret hidden cthulucam for benefit of all HP Lovecraft types.

ogden, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm an oldie (age and posting period), back from the days of a.m.a, but I never posted enough to permanently impinge on anyone's consciousness. I'm in the L.A. area, and I R neither fat nor Dastoor. In high school I loved prog, and have re-kindled my love of certain bands from that era - Gong, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, Hatfield & the North - but mainly listen to relatively widely-known non- mainstream groups like Yo La Tengo, Luna, Replacements, Stephin Merrit, Liz Phair, Sonic Youth, etc. I usually don't know who the hell you people are talking about.

nickn, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like talking about me, Nick Dastoor, and Nick Dastoor's lovely balls.

Great Caeser's Ghost!

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, SoCal Person #4! And you're old! Excellent. nickn I salute you!

Arthur, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My name is rainy and I am addicted to Mizone Sports Water. It's true.

rainy, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hi pals! my name is chaki from los angeles and i really love this place. recently a dj from KUCI came to one of my shows and gave me a bad review but it wasn't ned.

chaki, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Nick, I think I remember you. Weren't you the guy who was on ama way back when before the rest of us upstarts even knew it existed?

RickyT, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hello I am a newbie too. I'm from Dunedin. I'm an arty sort of person. That means I stay up late, sleep late, smoke too much, drink too much, and work too much sometimes. I do computer stuff. I am related to Shayne Carter (I taught him his first guitar chord).

smythe,mr smythe, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi. I'm relatively newish. My name's Mandee and I live in Colorado. E- mail me if you want explicit detail.

Mandee, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

recently a dj from KUCI came to one of my shows and gave me a bad review but it wasn't ned.

Eh? Wait, what band are you in, or are you solo?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I may not be "the guy" but I remember Tom, Ned, and Brian from those days, and I was on rec.music.alternative even before that. Both went downhill when teenagers got internet connections (sorry, kids). I'm 44 and in Pasadena, by the way.

nickn, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a fairly new poster, though I've been lurking for a few months now. Creepy. :) My real name's Vinnie, and I have no problem using that instead of palpable, so I'll go by that from now on. My fav bands, website, etc. is listed in one of those "Introduce Yourself" threads somewhere.

Vinnie, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sean>supply teacher>lured here by occasional fencing partner/ILM addict>hello

, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I just got smacked real, real hard for posting about rap in ILM, so I guess I better say something. I'm a student in (fucking cold) northern Minnesota. I like psychology, critical theory, film, and the dark empty hallways of abandoned school buildings. Oh yeah, and comic books. I really do have the best intent, but I seem to rub everyone that I would otherwise like very much the wrong way. I'm sorry.

Dan I., Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've got an ex-husband in Pasadena...

rainy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose I am vaguely new having been here for less than a month. I did not appear on the original thread anyway.

As you may have ascertained I am from Dunedin and am trying to infiltrate the art and music scene for want of something better to do. I am a sort of one person entertainment committee guaranteed to lower the tone of any conversation & provide cheap amusement. It makes a refreshing change from the Philosophy and English I study at university. There are far too many intellectual wankers around there, it gets boring.

Right now I would really like to have some pancakes, its nearly four and I have not had breakfast. There is a strawpeople remix playing in the room I am in so I dont know if I'll be able to keep it down though.

Huge helpings of Shalom to you all

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i did not know you came so recently, menelaus, because you have infiltrated so successfully!

Maria, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kind of ubiquitous right? I have had a lot of spare time recently, no university so I occupy myself harassing people online.

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't worry, you didn't annoy me Dan, and i (pretend to) like Jay-Z;)

gareth, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan - don't worry about it. But you can't really be surprised if people take offence if you suggest that they are only pretending to like something and must really be into something else. Can you?

Nick, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There seem to be a number of threads being revived recently after an eight or nine year gap. It gives me the willies, a bit, when I see my old posts after that length of time.
