Not able to be here and feeling bad

I have a new job (hooray!) with more money and responsibility (woo-hoo!) but it also means that I'll have to spend less time here (grrr).

It's the weekend so it's not a problem at the mo, but I just wanted you to know and see if anyone else has been faced with the same problem.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

...and also to let you know that if you think I've been ignoring you, I'm sorry and don't take it personally.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, its harsh innit? As you know Mark, I have the same problem. Although the hoel in my life is being filled withe something that, some would say, is a little productive (new job, improved career etc) I do feel pangs of pain when I see my name slipping down the statscock . . .

Johnney B, Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations on the new job, Mark!

I have moved to new/better jobs and thought I would spend less time here, but it always lures me back in the end. Do you think you'll be able to kick the habit? I am currently on a No Internet Before Noon thing and I'm managing to stick to it at the moment.

*looks at clock*
*points out that this rule only applies on weekdays*

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, once I stopped posting from work, I felt less and less like I knew what was going on, losing touch and all that. It's kinda sad to go from 4th or 5th on the statscock to 45th or whatever, but probably a good thing overall. Weekends are the best time for ILX anyhow!

Congrats on the new job!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, Madchen. Yes, I'm enjoying the challenge and the odd fact that, despite being in the same building and working for the same company, it is completely different from what I did before! I'm effectively in a dept. of one, so I manage *everything*, which means no-one covers things when I'm not there and I have to deal wth scary things like invoices (ulp!).

One odd perk of the job is I get a day out in London at the firm's expense, as I have to get info from a couple of libraries for which it is the only possible source (seems odd in today's interweb world). Which means there's potential for arranging FAPs and going to existing FAPs (there's a little bit of flexibility abt when I go: should be once a month or so). Of course the flipside is that I won't be able to read when the FAPs are, or see if anyone's replied to threads I've started about ones I (try to) organise!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

congrats mark.

Don't feel bad, like jel says there's always the weekend.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel, weekends may be good for giving you time to post and think up questions, but I don't think they are for bulk of posting, so there is the danger that you find you don't get as many replies as you would in the week - at least that's always been my experience, I'd love you guys to refute that statement!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am able to be here and still feel bad.

penelope_111, Saturday, 8 May 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Penelope, sorry to hear that, but do you mean you feel bad that you're spending time on ILX or bad coz of other stuff going on in yr life? If it's the latter there are ppl here who can at least try to help you out I'm sure.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes sir, all of the above.

Thanks for the offer, I shall keep it in mind.

penelope_111, Saturday, 8 May 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, come to think of it, I feel fine. I just wanted to dust off my angsty vibe for a bit - see if it still fits.

Anyway, best of luck with the new job.

penelope_111, Saturday, 8 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to think of an answer, but I'm stumped, I agree that you don't get as many answers if you ask questions on the weekend, but I'm not so sure if that's a bad thing or not. Perhaps, it's probably a question of you and I liking different things about ILX. I like silly, mundane and weird threads best, and pretty much ignore the more serious and really long ones.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm in the exact same position as mark h ... not like my absence has been missed, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i read that as "misused"

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Saturday, 8 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Let us misuse Eisbar.

Rah for new jobs all around -- hey, you check in when you can, I say. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of envy you guys -- it would be nice to be busy enough at work where I didn't have time to post here all day!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think you want my new kind of work-busy ... the paycheck and the commute are nice, though!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am all in favor of increasing the weekend traffic.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, ya got me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Many congratulations on the new job, Mark!

I don't post here much during working hours (hence I linger far down the statscock). I find the best approach is to be disciplined about it and only read a few threads during a pre-ordained time, such as when stopping for a mid-morning coffee, or if I don't go out of the office at lunchtime. That way it's possible to keep up with what's going on, even if I'm not posting very much.

I'd be here all day otherwise. And out of a job, most likely:)

C J (C J), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats, Mark. I just got a new job myself - the kind I've been working towards getting for 3 years. I don't think I'll be spending less time, here, though. It does seem to me there is more posting going on during the week.

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 8 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think CJ's method has a lot going for it. And an OxFAP is U&K if we can arrange it....
