i enjoy the sparring between these two on sky sports. particularly because the odious, xenophobic, arrogant mr.marsh is usually outquipped by the dashing, quick-witted stelling. is there a pundit who delights in his own smarminess like rodney? i think not. i sort of enjoy watching him though, he keeps on finding new ways to disgust me.

Today's been great to watch, with Jeff waving his monkey (that isn't a euphemism, surprisingly) in excitement at Hartlepool getting into the 2nd Division playoffs. I always like it when professional neutrals let it slip in that kind of way - less when it's in favour of a big club, and not when it's against hated rivals, but getting excited about your own modest club is always classic.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Rodney's new way of disgusting me today was announcing Djorkaeff's second goal. A defeat next weekend at Man City and this could (mathematically) be Everton's worst season ever.

Stelling is stellar.

Now, I'm a quiet man. I am a peaceful, fun-loving, philanthropic individual. But I hate, yes hate, Rodney Marsh with a passion I usually only reserve for dictators and lords of the Sith. No acid has yet been manufactured which would cause this odious man pain enought to compensate for his blackened heart and ignoble outpourings. I'm sure there must be people on this good earth that wind me up more than him, but I can't think of one.

Jeff Stelling's great, everything Des Lynam used to be before he started believing his own hype.

However the real star of the show is Chris Kamara for his ott enthusiasm and being probably the only man in the UK in the 21st century with a jheri curl.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

At one point today, Marsh ended some vague nonsense with something like "...so we'll be able to talk about this more intelligently in August," and Jeff said, very drily, "Oh I very much doubt that, Rodney."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't Jeff Stelling resonsible for 'And they'll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight' ...?

Dougie Donnelly presented the Old Firm match on BBC yesterday afternoon wearing a Clyde FC club tie (Clyde could have clinched promotion to the SPL later that afternoon, but didn't).

you silly billy, marsh.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

hmmmmm, seems a bit harsh, hypocritical even. but Marsh, entertaining as he is, is a rather arrogant pundit who could maybe do with being taken down a peg anyway.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

why hypocritical steve?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

hard to articulate but i have this feeling that with football punditry being what it is, and bad jokes so rife in the tabloids, at the games (among rival fans) and in the TV studios (Andy Townsend has committed far worse crimes against pundom, tho not as 'offensive' to anyone perhaps) it just smacks of...if not hypocrisy then double standards or inconsistency or SOMETHING, esp. as this is SKY (Fox) we're talking about, run a by someone hardly renowned for their good taste.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

How does this compare with Big Ron's infamous incident(s)?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Ron's will be seen as far worse because of it's direct racist connotation. i guess we should be taking Marsh's quip more seriously than had any been made about 9/11 when that happened tho...which would've been considered hugely insensitive. Perhaps like Marsh I am continuing to unappreciate the scale of the Tsunami disaster because a) it's too vast to comprehend, b) humour as a way to deal with situations is always tempting to those not deeply affected by it and c) it's further away (not just geographically if you see what i mean) to the likes of him

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

incidentally, the BBC site uses a photo of Marsh SMILING alongside the caption 'Marsh fired for making tsunami joke'.

Inappropriate picture/story combinations is a huge factor in shaping reader response.

Only every week! I don't know how I missed this thread first time round

Is it true that Jeff Stelling is going to be the new presenter of Countdown? If so, inspired appointment, Channel Four.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

He's turned down the opportunity, according to our C4 connection. Apparently it was down to him, Rory Bremner, and the dude off the Pimms adverts.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff Stelling would be great at Countdown. Someone make him reconsider!

ailsa, Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:29 (sixteen years ago)

This has got to be the most one-sided TS ever BTW

I feel a poll coming on...

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 October 2008 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

There's a drinking game based around things that happen/are said on Soccer Saturday - I reckon Kenny Deuchar moved to the US to save the livers of the viewers.

ailsa, Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

marsh would be great telling stories in dictionary corner. the 'pull you off half time' anecdote at least once a visit.

Barunka Hussein O'Shaughnessy (Frogman Henry), Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

Are working class types allowed in Dictionary Corner?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

They let Arthur Smith in every so often.

ailsa, Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:02 (sixteen years ago)

Ah, I haven't seen Countdown in years

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 October 2008 12:03 (sixteen years ago)

Yet somehow, every time I watch, it's always Rick bloody Wakeman (except a couple of weeks again when it was Anton bloody Du Beke)
