Can men be sexy on purpose?

Cathy said that "men's underwear generally just isn't sexy. Men's underwear that is supposed to be sexy is ridiculous."

Is there ANYTHING men can do on purpose to be sexy?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

floss

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Be yourself, allegedly. But apparently you're not supposed to do that on purpose.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

*shrug*

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer's answer: flee the country and appear distant and aloof to all of us over here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, I know the answer to this . . . sens eof humour, right?

Well, it's either that or continually profess your love of and expertise at the gentle and noble art of cunnilingus.

Johnney B, Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You're all proving my point beautifully.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i get approached by random girls and told im sexy, at which point i have no idea what i am doing to make them say this or why only strangers ever tell me this and everybody i know tells me otherwise. erm..my point..whenever i have been reffered to as sexy i have not been trying to be so. when i do try i fail, so i dont try and apparently it must come natural. also i have no idea when im being funny but if people think im joking about something i tend to go with the flow.

leon vincent, Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I try my best to take the sexy out of being sexy.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Woman finds cunnilingus sexy.
2. Man give good cunnilingus.
3. Woman finds man sexy.

Where is the fault in my logic?

Johnney B, Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am always sexy and I mean it.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I do it deliberately.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't you, mean "I am, always sexy and, I mean, it"?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it must be such a burden though

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

More commas please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

One sexy thing you can do is plant tomatoes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going down to alphabet street, i'm gonna crown the first girl that i meet, i'm gonna talk so sexy she'll want me from my head to my feet.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess, the only way I can imagine being sexy, on purpose, is, purposely, not thinking, about sexy or being it.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly, I think men's sexiness is most commonly a "negative" quality—by that I don't mean that it's bad, I mean that it often comes about through an ABSENCE of certain things—what are these things??—rather than a positive quality i.e. the result of performing specific actions. I scarcely need to say that I'm talking about normative sexuality and reactions to it, I don't think any of this stuff is inevitable or genetic.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.thesunmachine.net/image_archive/archive/feb03/hasselhoff.jpg

don (don), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Some might argue that a woman's sexiness also comes from an absense of certain things, such as clothing.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

naked women : (((((((

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Robbie, what does it mean to 'crown' a girl? It sounds like it ought to mean punch.

I don't know the answer to the question, sorry.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Prince means it as in to make a girl one's queen...

potentially it's just there cause it rhymes.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

naked women : (((((((

why the face?

Oh, I see, Robbie.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it doesn't mean that, at all, robbie lumsden.

I either meant to have the closing bracket, instead, or I am having mood swings and bouts of amnesia.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the lyrical analysis of prince songs is always a joy to me....

what does it mean?

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Women look better if they keep their watch on.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

robbie, if you have to ask...

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

...i do...

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

continually profess your love of and expertise at the gentle and noble art of cunnilingus

Actions speak louder than words.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Can men be sexy on purpose?

No.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes I'm sexy, move like a stud
Kicking the stall all night
Sometimes I'm so shy, got to be worked on
Don't have no bark or bite, alright

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

crown Verb. To hit on the head. E.g."Can you see a lump on my head? I've just crowned myself getting up."

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince then recontextualising a jaded term to put an interesting spin on the idea of sexual power?

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

a possibility.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

if i droped down on my knees in front of you and looked up like a hungry puppy would you let me eat?

harry p, Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Not with a name like "analvengence" I wouldn't.

C J (C J), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha!

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Men who appear sexy are usually confident, and also don't take things (themselves included) too seriously. I guess those are things which men can do on purpose, even if it means faking the confidence thing.

C J (C J), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't take myself at all seriously!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Nor does anyone else :)

C J (C J), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool!!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Shave your head. Seriously. Only stay away from my wife.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think your wife would fancy me, Dan.

C J (C J), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Does intentional bed-head count as sexy?

mouse, Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

NO!

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad we cleared that up then.

mouse, Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Intentional breadhead is, however, very sexy.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Like hell they can't! I have seen it in action. I have fallen for it.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Another easy way men can try to be sexy on purpose...

http://www.kuci.org/~brianm/ile/negra.jpg

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a beard for a while. I got schoolgirls fancying me. seriously...

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what I'm talking about.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

How to wear suits

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

So the answer is - get 'em drunk, tell 'em a joke, and boff away.

Johnney B, Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the main point is: the cliche maneuvers (i.e. what you see in the movies) just have the opposite effect.

Yes, tho of course they might also ellicit a "aww, he's trying to be sexy, that's so cute!" response from some chix0rs. Trying to be sexy the traditional way = the new not knowing you're being sexy? (I have no idea wtf I'm talking about)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it's more like "awww, he's so not creative", was my point.

Obviously, trying SOMETHING that isn't horrifically freaky or harmful is better than doing nothing at all, however dorky or cheesy it is.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't this not being able to be sexy on purpose thing a form of independence, I mean that ideas of "sexiness" with men are not ruled by convention or whatever.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean wouldn't everyone, male or female, be happier if it was all truly subjective?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It is all pretty much subjective, Ro.. the problem basically is the signals of sexiness in question... hence (I'm guessing) the thread(?)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I suppose, but isn't a lack of signal more favourable? I'm not sure the signals of female sexiness aren't just programmed into us anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surely totally disgusting to some women. And I'm likely attractive to some women out there, too. And I'm surely more in the middle "meh" category to most women out there. (this includes my looks, body language, personality, interests, sense of humor, everything)

there are also a lot of women out there.

So, it's kinda futile to make such a huge fucking science out of it. As long a guy can learn from his mistakes (a mistake being doing something horrificaly freaky and harmful as I mention above.. like creating a bad reputation), then what's a guy to do? Just do his thing and hopefully a gal will come along and like his thing. (intentially set up for a saucy VengaDan rejoinder)

My point is: women are different. men are different. trying to figure out the opposite sex is kinda futile, because not all of one sex are ever the same. Just try to have fun being single, be a little adventurous if need be, and who knows what will happen. (this isn't addressed to you, specifically, Ro, this is just a general "you" I'm talking about.)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the sexiest men are the ones who don't try

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard that so many times and I still maintain loads of those men try their hearts out.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i'm sure they do butt hey certainly aren't the ones i go for.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

butt hey!

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

surely some women looooooove being prizes to guys, and these are the ones those guys go after. (and sadly, this is what mass media usually portrays as "the way it is between guys and girls", which is complete bullshit, cuz there's this rest of the world, see...)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck off! i've had two bottles of red wine, I have a right to spell things incorrectly! :)

x-post

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG, no more butt hay for you.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure they do butt too

xxxxxpost yeah

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why is a naked woman sexy and a naked man is just... funny?"

Ashton Kutcher (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

because the mans body dosnt need to be sexy

le v, Sunday, 9 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hey ipsofacto, how ya doing?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a sexy mind. it is no accident.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

can a man with bitch tits be sexy?

truism, Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, if he wears a cone bra and is liberal with the cherry flavoured nipple drops.

penelope_111, Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I also forgot about winks.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, winks are good but not done in a leery obvious way, they must be discreet and done with a half smile, certainly not cheeky chappy fashion.

penelope_111, Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(Tracer to RFI: Shelter Island thread already, someone's waiting there for you...)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude aren't you supposed to be sunning yourselves right now?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is a naked woman sexy and a naked man is just... funny?"

wtf??

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i am very sexy when i'm naked.

a naked woman, on the other hand, when viewed from certain angles, is just... fanny.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

a naked man, on the other hand, when viewed from certain angles, is just... an arsehole

C J (C J), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

this properly is not exclusive to men.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

but of course, from some angles people sometimes see me as a complete dick.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

and some people take pleasure from that.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i take pleasure from it often too

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

too often, perhaps

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

nobody ever sees me as a complete dick, probably because im circumcised

le v, Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Try a complex yoga manoeuvre and you might be seen in dickheadedness glory

penelope_111, Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

or it might all go up in yoga flames.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I often wonder if men who do yoga are bendy enough to

Never mind.

RJG - I think that alphabet street isn't about cunnilingus. Prince is never really euphemistic about sex. (Sadly Prince did sing a 12 minute ballad about cunnilingus (entitled Come) which outlines in some detail his technique and performance).

Also the Obstetrical meaning of 'Crown' then becomes soooo unpalatable that i choose not to accept that interpretation.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Sunday, 9 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

alphabet street.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 9 May 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep thinking of Sesame Street, for some inexplicable reason.

C J (C J), Sunday, 9 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"On a very special episode..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 May 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sesame Street is brought to you by the numbers 6 and 9

C J (C J), Sunday, 9 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

my undies are skidmark-less

uh (eetface), Sunday, 9 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pleased to hear that.
