I'm visiting Shelter Island for a couple of days with some friends - does anyone know about this place?

is it next to Long Island?

A friend of mine lived there for a great while. It's essentially a pleasant summer community ala the Hamptons or Fire Island (only not quite as posh). Trouble was, his parents had just split, so my friend went to live with his Dad full time on Shelter Island (and ended up attending Shelter Island High...which I gather was somewhat akin to Piggy's travails in "Lord of the Flies"). It's a nice place for the weekend, but I wouldn't want to live there full time.

HONOR THE FIRE ISLAND!

Hi Emma! Shelter Island is very pretty and comfortable but it is ground zero for Lyme disease: 90% of the island's abundant deer ticks are carriers of the disease. Tuck your pants into your socks! But have a good time!

Emma and I went walking in the woods of northern New Jersey once, inspected each other thoroughly (ahem), put all our clothes in the wash, and took scalding hot showers. Emma came out with a towel around her, Alice gave her a cup of coffee and shrieked, and I think actually dropped the cup mid-handoff because a tick was crawling on the side of Emma B's face!!

Of course I'm remembering the monster-movieish Tracer Hand version, which may not be the exact truth....

I hope you're having fun Emma! Get away from the computer though, sheesh!!

Wait no, I mean... wait, come back!!

We have been trying to get your attention since yesterday night.
It was so funny, I had the feeling I was entering your world for a moment. We could see that you were online and we were reading your posts.
We are all missing you and me a lot...
By the way, no tick and coffee on my face this time.

This is too weird... Is it sunny there?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(I mean I'm guessing not... btw "getting my attention" rarely works on here since I don't actually PAY attention)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It is not sunny, we are all indoors in this big house with lots of windows. Paul made excellent pancakes and we are drinking bloody marys.

hi Tracer, Tracy & I have a share out here in a house which holds 8 and one of the others couldn't go so we asked Emma along. it's raining today so we're going to work on a Heironymous Bosch jigsaw puzzle! we're staying well away from the deer ticks...

we travel back to New York tonight

Watch out for that puzzle! The whole set-up sounds like the first five minutes of a freaky tale of the supernatural... maybe you shouldn't fit that last piece in?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 9 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)
