Aggressive Porn

I logged on to the Internet today to read ILM and check mail. As well as loading up FT, Explorer also loaded up 2 disgusting porn sites. When I tried to close them, more sprung up and multiplied. Then I got a site that said "Your computer knows you've been reading porn sites. Download Internet erase" that offered some sort of commercial product. When I tried to close one site it took over my screen. I had to switch off my computer and start again. 2 porn sites were loaded again but I'm ignoring them now. Has anyone had this happen before? How did you deal with it?

I would get one of those pop-up stopper programs. It helps block out a lot of crap, especially those irritating camera ads.

Unfortunately, a lot of the bloggers happen to have a hella-lot of pop up ads that makes these little pop-up killers a must have.

But Sundar, they pay so well!

This happens to me all the time at work when I'm trying to categorise websites - the record so far is 14 pop-ups from one site.

Shit, I thought you meant VIOLENT porn. Like the stuff in 'Videodrome'. That stuff rocks. I hate soft 'erotic' slush!

I've never had this happen such that I actually had to switch off my computer. Did you try quitting your browser (with Alt-X or whatever it is?)? That always works for me.

Generally when this happens, there's a Javascript program running in a browser the size of a pixel which opens up a new window every time a window is closed. If you're on a Windows platform, look in the task bar for an IE window that says "about:blank". If you can find one, get rid of it. If something takes over your whole screen, try hitting alt-tab to switch to a different program, then delete the offending window from the task bar.

Alt-F4 is the shortcut key to close the window you're currently viewing, by the way. Saves wear & tear on your wrist and your mouse.

Having had to endure that awful cascade a couple of times thanks to practical jokers, I ask if there's any proof that such aggressive marketing tactics for porn sites actually work?

I can't imagine that even a netporn addict would want to deal with this... It's not as if people who surreptitiously rent video porn want to come out of the box with a 1000 sticky-note porn promo flyers affixed to their clothes.

Netscape won't let browser windows appear without the window title bar (including close buttons etc), which is good. normally a quick application of Alt-Tab and Alt-F4 will find and kill the offending windows.

as for the effectiveness, i think it works on people accidently clicking on the windows. the people putting the ads in pop-ups etc are probably getting paid per click - they're not the owners of the sites in the adverts, and don't care whether or not the ad results in a sale.

Yeah, but as we've seen from the mass dot-com poopings, this business model has to cave in at some point. Then again, who am I to criticize the most successful and lucrative online industry?
