you have reminded me of Cronopios & Famas (or whatever it is called). i started that a couple of years ago, and then left it somewhere (probably at my parents). i will dig it out and finish it off

Joan Didion - Slouching Toward Bethelehem and The White Album, The American Way of Death by Jessica Mitford, or Men at Arms by Evelyn Waugh.

I am reading a great social history blah fascinating blah blah. Seriously though it's called The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction. Talks about irish, polish, and black fids getting swiped from their poverty- stricken families in NYC (circa mid 1800s) and sent to catholic families in arizona and New Mexico. Most catholic families in the SW were Mexican though, so white townspeople freeked out when they saw white kids being adopted by Mexicans.

"One People" by Guy Kennaway. It's got a similar tone to "Tales of the City" (probably not everyone's cup of tea - this book is much funnier and less self-conscious, and deals with rather more real people), and is set in a poor village in Jamaica. A more clueless but empathetic cast you've never seen - the chapters are almost stand alone tales/parables, but there is kind of a central story that persists throughout. It's brilliant, easy to read but not empty and shallow. It's, ahem, irie.

i second what Markx said...

I am hijacking this thread to ask if I should read 'A Fan's Notes' by Frederick Exley, which a friend has just lent me.

Nick, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes! Fan's Notes is incredible -- I always thought of it as a bildungsroman for ppl. who had already come of age.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So what's it about, then? Me, I've been reading some of Pushkin's prose pieces...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

About a middle aged man who watches sports and is depressed and was in an insane asylum then left and is a cynical vital mess.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, the life story of Dennis Miller, then.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A Fan's Notes is amazing--touching and hilarious and beautifully written.

You can read Secrets of the Flesh: A Biography of Collette. That'll keep you going for a while.

Ally, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone read the Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay yet? It's been out in paperback for awhile now and I'm tempted to pick it up.

fritz, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm about 100 pages into K&K, and it's damn good so far. And I haven't even gotten to the heavy comic book stuff yet! Excellent, excellent stuff.
