i hate carrots

carrots: ruiner of food? i can't stand them mixed in with salads or egg rolls or any other thing that uses them. they always overwhelm the other flavors, almost as if they're saying, "keep quiet you scumbag flavors, i am the true flavor and the only one worth tasting". in that sense, they're taste "bullies" or "flavor fascists" if you will. carrots by themselves are fine, but when they're in something i wish that carrots had never appeared on this earth.

i love them. soups, stews, vegetable medleys, bring 'em on.

Raw carrots: Classic
Raw carrots mixed with other food: Dud
Cooked carrots: Dud

Bbbb But Carrot soup! Num.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Big time classic.

I sort of "rediscovered" them this past year. I used to buy them only sporadically. Now I buy a three pound bag of 'em every couple weeks. GREAT snack food. Healthy, and enough roughage to fill you up.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does carrot always turn up in vomit???

Bulk Bogan, Monday, 10 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That's stomach lining, innit?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Carrots are an excellent snack. When you're peckish, simply grab a carrot instead of evil food such as biscuits or crisps. They're far more nutritious, and your eyesight gets a small yet worthwhile boost. Alternatively, sit on one and close your eyes for a bit.

carrots in soups not only aren't bullies, they're incredibly flexible

also search carrot cake, I mean who doesn't love some kickass carrot cake with a wicked fuckin' cream cheese frosting

y'all know what I'm talkin' about

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 10 May 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I always find that pepperoni and other strong meats on pizzas act like "taste bullies".

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Braised carrots. OH MY. They're like candy.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"carrots in soups not only aren't bullies, they're incredibly flexible"

well, i'll concede that sometimes under certain circumstances the carrot can absorb the flavor of a soup, stew or sauce, and that can temper the flavor a bit and make it taste better. but usually in most foods it just takes over and annoys me.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I made some carrot and coriander soup last night. Carrots, red onions, potato, a handful of fresh coriander, simmered in fresh vegetable stock then processed in the blender with a dollop of cream and lashings of black pepper until smooth and velvety. Lovely.

Plus carrots help you see in the dark.

C J (C J), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't actually help you see in the dark. Incredibly, that was british war time propaganda, in order to cover up for their use of radar.

Raw carrots are the work of little food angels, especially when freshly out of the ground.

Whither stock without them?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't actually help you see in the dark. Incredibly, that was british war time propaganda, in order to cover up for their use of radar.

I thought that they were in some way good for your eye sight, and that the British forces just sort of used this myth in exaggeration for the reasons you said.

also classic with turnip

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

aye, your probably right.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Carrots are awful. It is fortunate that they're brightly coloured and thus easy to pick out of otherwise-decent food.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"I thought that they were in some way good for your eye sight"

Actually I remember reading that even though they are good for you carrots don't contribute to better eyesight at all.

I love carrots! The only bad thing about them is that they are an integral part of most cole slaws, and cole slaw is the vilest foodstuff ever created.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

raw carrots, delicious

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love carrots! The only bad thing about them is that they are an integral part of most cole slaws, and cole slaw is the vilest foodstuff ever created.

Now that's when I have to stand up and say "waitagoddamnminute!" Cole slaw, when done right, is the best thing ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed. It's not the carrot's fault, it's all the goddamn mayonnaise people put in it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't even remind me...yech.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Cole slaw, when done right, is the best thing ever.

Completely correct. El Diablo speaks sadness here. There aren't many good cole slaws at ALL but there's a place around here that makes one flavored with blue cheese (and next to no mayo, though I don't mind that at all) that is JUST RIGHT for taking the edge off of spicy dishes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

destroy: that weird carrot-raisin slaw that never tastes good no matter how many times i try it.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Ew, yes, now that is vile.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

some mayonnaise and some carrots are essential to good cole slaw, but yeah you don't wanna overdo it.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: good recipes that do without the thing most often associated with them i.e. mayonnaiseless coleslaw, and especially tomatoless barbecue sauce. Of course there's the carrotless bong but that's obviously some kind of novelty madness.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't want to argue about recipes again.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember what happened the last time.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

how could I forget?

anyway Jody OTM: never put raisins in slaw.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Cole slaw, when done right, is the best thing ever.

true. unfortunately, like potato salad, it's done wrong 99% of the time. this is in no way the fault of carrots, though. carrots are delicious, full stop.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren you missed the best cole slaw ever!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago)
