CD Repair Kits. Some involve liquids. Some involve sticking your CD in a small plastic contraption and turning a handle. But which ones work, if any? Is it worth the bother and expense if all you want to do is (a) feel better about yourself and (b) flog your old CDs to unsuspecting punters over the Internet.

(a) is designed to attract the 'retarded middle-aged man' comments I've grown to love so much.

Skipdoctor has saved many of my CDs that have got in the way when some beer has been spilled. It basically involves coating the CD surface in the magic liquid (actually distilled water) and then turning it in the turny thingy so the very top layer of the CD (with all the gunge/scratches on it) is scraped off. It makes the CD surface all dull though, so although it works a treat you won't pass those CDs off as new.

Thank you.

Is there anything that leaves them all shiny?

If ypu have scratches in your CD, and they aren't huge, try rubbing them with toothpaste. I'm not kidding, it actually works; apparently the toothpaste polishes the CD so the CD player won't mind the scratch.

I have minor scratches on CDs that come in cardboard sleeves, like the 'Harlem World' old skool hip-hop thing. I will try toothpaste if I can pluck up courage.

Toothpaste actually works wonders on scratches in any kind of transparent surface (like watch faces, for example).

What about Eucryl smokers toothpowder, how effective is that?

I've got a David Grubbs CD (yeah lucky me) with a big crack on the edge and it plays just fine.

Also, If you have scratches which are fairly deep, get out the Brasso and rub with a cloth over and over again, it will make the surface dull like the above skipdoctor contraption, but will make the whole area thinner, thus removing the scratch - I have saved a few CDs this way, although I have then backed them up afterwards.
