I'm thinking of going there in July but don't know where yet - want to avoid the whole Ayia Napa thing like the plague but also be somewhere there are bars and restaurants aplenty. Ideally we'd stay in a hotel that was right by a sandy beach yet a short stroll from some picturesque harbour town with tavernas etc. Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

go to Northern Cyprus! They have a TEMPLE OF BARBARISM there.
(I don't actually know if Northern Cyprus is worth visiting, but I feel sorry for them and so think people ought to visit it)

I was reading about Paphos last weekend and am now dying to go (it may turn out to be my beat-the-blues winter sun destination next February).

If you want a sandy beach, avoid Limassol (it's otherwise OK if you aren't right in the centre of it where it can get a bit Ayia-Napa-ish. Actually my parents stayed away from the centre of Ayia Napa and loved it - it's quiet through the days as the nutters are all still in their beds, and it is a lovely town with great beaches.) I've heard nice things about Protaras, and Paphos was lovely. Go somewhere where you can get to the turtle beach (near Paphos), and try and make time for a trip to Famagusta as well if you can.

Oh I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
Where I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things
That a woman ain't s'posed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me
(this part is spoken...) Hey, you know what paradise is? It's a lie.
A fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be.
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, and it's that man you fought with this morning,
the same one you're going to make love with tonight. That's truth, that's love.
Sometimes I've been to cryin' for unborn children
That might have made me complete
But I, I took the sweet life and never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost too much to be free
Hey lady, I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me
I've been to paradise - never been to me
(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise - never been to me
(I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
While I sipped champagne on a yacht)
I've been to paradise - never been to me
