I need a purse.

right now I'm carrying a handbag from Un Apres-Midi de Chien that I got super cheap at Bendel. It is tiny (maybe 6"x6"x4") and packed dense, but my recent purchase of the Dell DJ has pushed it over its limit, and I'm getting tired of having a bag I can't put over my shoulder.

I don't know a lot about bags because I'm so picky about how they look that I only manage to find one I like every couple of years. I don't like bags that are big or mushy/slouchy, I like them to be structured and have lots of pockets.

stuff that's always in my purse: (this is a nice subthread)
palmpilot
wallet
cell phone
dell dj
digital camera
passport
tiny notebook
pen
rescue remedy
burt's bees lipbalm
small bottle of hand lotion

you need a backpack or a suitcase.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

was there ever a cartoon where some nice lady had a purse that was actually a portal to another dimension?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

girliest thread aeverah!

What's a DJ?

I love purses/handbags. I have tons of them and switch them out every couple of days (or depending what I'm wearing.)

sounds like you need a tote/messenger bag rather than a purse, teeny. with all that stuff.

My purse essentials are wallet (which has a little handstrap and can double as a mini-purse when neccesary), cellphone, brush, lip balm, lip gloss, lipstick, powder compact, lotion, gum, hair ties, asthma inhalers, pills, sunglasses and usually a couple of pens.

I am trying to find an example of something I like and I can't even do that. :(

haha no really, I'm against large bags! I can technically fit all that stuff into my little tiny bag but I have to take everything out to get at what I want. (The Dell DJ is like an Ipod except slightly larger)

I like the looks of this one but it's just one big empty space inside; I need multple pouches to protect all my electronics. I will probably just end up hitting the vintage store anyway.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, try Target. I buy a bag nearly every time i go in there. They have so many and they're all pretty cheap so good for experimenting till you find something you like.

Purses rule.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps you need a filing cabinet with coasters?

Doggy Bags

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny, where are you?

i also like pockets in my purses, and have had good luck with kenneth cole reaction, dkny and nine west. but i don't know if those brands are available outside the states much.

all of them do stuff that is cute yet functional, with pockets galore. often in something other than leather (which just seems too heavy), and sometimes in good colors.

if you're in london, there is a store that has bags with TONS of pockets in various sizes on floral st or wherever the tin tin shop is, in covent garden.

and the gap has some cute smaller bags with loads of pockets as well...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean casters.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

like wheels.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I love bags like this and wish they weren't so expensive. I'd love to line my walls with them:

That one carries optimal "smack would-be attackers in the fucking face" effect.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No, they're worth to much. Wouldn't want to crack it.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in the midwest, target is probably a really good idea, as is kenneth cole. That bag is awesome, sam!

this is classic but also boring:

ooh, I like this! (for $400, bah)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would warn against two things (as you don't seem to be the change yr bag every couple of days kinda gal):

-avoid colors like red and pink. Hot now, will go out of date before you probably need to replace it.

-Avoid light colored bags. Dirt, yo.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get fashion.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that first purse was the shiznit, Teeny. I'd make you one but after the strap broke on the ferry I lost faith in my purse-making abilities :(

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

My purse is celery green. It's the tiniest purse I've ever gotten (from H&M), but it forced me to carry less weight around.

I read recently that dark green is a wise purse color choice because it works year-round.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny,

go here:
http://www.carolinehwang.net/

then go to store, then bags.

i think her bags (not to mention her art) are really amazing, makes me wish i had someone to buy one for.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This weekend I got a tiny black bag with 'sagittarius' on it. It's strictly going out only as it won't hold much.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like the first purse teeny linked too.

i have several purses and shoulder bags. the one i use the most is small, black leather, and has some red, orange, and green stitching along the bottom panel. my favorite-looking purse isn't necessarily the best-quality one, but it's covered with tiny beads, black on the sides with a pattern of squares that have pink, green, gold, blue, and white triangles within them.

what i carry:

wallet
keys
pressed-powder compact
lipstick
passport (sometimes)
ortho tri-cyclen compact
whatever coins have fallen out of my wallet or haven't gone in yet

i'm getting a new cell phone very soon, so i'll be able to add that.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Target does have some purses with a lot of pockets that are kind of cute -- I'd recommend them if you're looking for something attractive and pretty inexpensive. Coach has some very nice purses with a lot of pockets and compartments, but they're really overpriced unless you buy them from at an outlet, etc.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this one, it seems huge!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not what teeny wants, but can someone remind me of the name for those medium-large, over-the-shoulder, slightly saggy (nylon?) tote-bags that are solid (often pastel) on the sides, but a different color on the in-set top part that has the zipper? those are great.

i think her bags (not to mention her art) are really amazing, makes me wish i had someone to buy one for.

haha. girlfriend = excuse for shopping!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(not that i don't share the sentiment)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 16 May 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam, can I borrow your new bag? All the stores seem to have astrologically themed bags so at least there's something for me, as I am totally screwed by the initial trend.

I wish the Esprit outlet hadn't closed as they always had cute and cheap bags.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 16 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, boys like to buy girls bags??

That red one way upthread is absolutely beautiful. Reminds me of a wine jug.

one month passes...
What would you call one of those smaller purses with really nominal straps that you would use to accesorize with formal wear, like if you going to the prom?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

a clutch purse, i think

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I would call it a purse. But I'm a dude.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

A baguette.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A pain au chocolat.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what if it was heart-shaped, had a small strap and you were going to a prom?

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like queen bee stuff . . . it's a little pricey, but worth it, i think. here's a couple of their bags --

http://www.buyolympia.com/queenbeehtml/images/fishbag_cutout_lg.jpg

http://www.buyolympia.com/queenbeehtml/images/orbit_truck_green_lg.jpg

the second one is more of a messenger bag style...

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's an omelette au jambon, I believe.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that I got super cheap at Bendel Henri Bendel? Fifth Ave? I thought you went to chicago or somewhere. Is bendels there too? Cause it wouldn't have been super cheap, even at 75% off. But I've only been to Chi-town once.

Skottie, Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the one with the fish is awesome.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

er, yes, bendel on fifth in NYC, I last went Feb 2002, I got my little purse for $15 marked down from about a hundred and got a larger one for my mom (same brand) for $20 marked down from about 150.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 26 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 26 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

THE GREEN AND BLACK ONE IS PERFECT.

If the shark one didn't have that sure to be annoying white chunk at the top, it would love it even more. The sharky rulez tho.
