corrie at the moment

todd and karl = entertaining.

fred's internet dating = silly. plus him and mike never seemed that close, so i don't know why they're pretending they were once, now that they've fallen out.

sally and her daughter = good at first, then sally's "competitive parent" thing went way over the top and out of character.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

opinions on any current plotlines would be most welcome.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

you totally ruined my theory that nobody under 30 watches this. tho this may still be true in the south of England.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm over 30 in dog years, if that helps.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The reason Fred and Mike are so close is because they were part of the ill-advised Rovers-buying consortium with the late Duggie Ferguson. Business partners, innit?

Other storylines...

Les and Chesney = sweet
Candice and marriedbloke, nick and Maria = who cares?
Gail's mutation into Ivy = classic.
Ashley and Claire = was sweet, now just dull.
Maya and the mysterious disappearance of Tyrone's dog = WTF?!!??

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I watch it, but am slightly out of touch.

Gail is a psycho. I swear some of the scenes with her and her son have a considerable amount of sexual tension.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha - Jason Grimshaw trying to snog Gail = comedy classic.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the show about the prison, with slatternly blonde guard, mincy psychoanalyst, no-nonsense commander and usual cast of ne'er-do-wells? The guard in particular has got me hooked I must say. She's perfected an expression on her face that seems to signify both dreadful childhood abuse and a capacity for remorseless behavior.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad Girls?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
gail vs todd's mum = ott, but still entertaining.

nick vs todd = taking it a bit too far. i think we had had enough fisticuffs for one night.

les and chesney = getting on my nerves.

todd's mum putting homophobic battersby in his place = inspiring.

gail = surprisingly homophobic.

fred and orchid = ok. she is actually going to take a shine to him, and they are going to hook up. this is, perhaps, straying too far into romcom area. reminds me of the film green card, or some other film where a pair of opposites who annoy each other and meet in awkward circumstances eventually fall in love.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.corrie.net/kabin/0519ananova1.jpg

classic - i have never liked it as much as i do right now.

ashley's claire scarliy dull tho, i reckon she will go psycho pretty soon.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How come when I searched for Corrie threads earlier I wasn't given this one?

Bless it, Corrie is brilliant at the moment. Much better than the tear stick carry on over in Albert Square. I just don't care anymore.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

having watched the whole todd/karl thing, i'm glad coronation street waited 35 years before they introduced a gay character. let's hope they wait another 35 years before they introduce another. leave it to a soap that represents such things in a realistic, responsible manner... god, how i miss footballer's wives..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

do you think it's irresponsible because a lot of the characters have reacted in a homophobic manner? or because of the OTT nature of the street brawls?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the programme itself is pretty over the top these days, so i suppose most of the representation is merely consistent with the 'how much can we possibly milk out of one story-line?' writing style at the moment. that said, i find the way they have gone about depicting this issue to be rather unfortunate. karl is the archetypal 'predatory homosexual' that the daily mail is always warning us about. todd... well, where to start on that one? frankly, he's the sort of whingeing fuck that i can understand people wanting to thump - but that isn't so much irresponsible as unfortunate (and, ultimately rather dreary) script-writing. it was the most recent episodes that i found alternately patronising and worrying. the whole 'todd is so BRAVE, being GAY' thing his mum being the patronising. the worrying part is how this looks to any kid of 16, thinking that they might be gay and worrying about people's responses. the brother's 'i think you're a filthy queer, stay away from our house/ if i started hitting you, i might not be able to stop' reaction isn't exactly an encouraging one, and while such reactions obviously do occur on occasion, it would be nice not to see EVERY SINGLE ONE of these reactions being experienced by the one character.

its almost as if they've thought 'here's our chance! a GAYIST! let's dump every sort of crap that a poofter could possibly experience upon this fellow! hurray for us and our inclusive and diverse representation!'. you know, corrie, you could always have another gay character a few years down the line - they might be more widespread than you think. and that person might have one or two of the problems todd's come across, rather than all of them.

on this basis, next episode i confidently expect todd to be horrifically injured in a sordid fisting incident, and to be unable to make it to casuatly because he trips over the kerb in his matching gold-lame hotpant and pointy stilleto ensemble.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

some good points in hobart's post - although i think the fact that there were three episodes on monday night added to the feeling that they were piling it on - if the viewer was given a day or two to digest each chunk it may have made more sense. missed tonight's episode due to work, heard there was some fisticuffs between todd and his brother. they're going to squeeze as much high drama out of this plotline as poss.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 May 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
poor sarah. a single girl betrayed recently by her ex-boyfriend todd, sleeps with another single guy, then gets slapped by her ex. then her ex's mother describes HER behaviour as being "wicked". it's a shame jason resorted to such homophobic nastiness in the fight with todd - he could have actually claimed the moral high ground over his brother for once.

good episode. good to see they're playing down the ridiculous caricature sally had become in recent weeks - went from v.tactful and considerate to COMPLETELY tactless - they seem to be settling down to a happy medium.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Where has Sarah's daughter gone though, eh? Trolloping herself round the neighbourhood with not a thought for poor little Bethany. Also, she seems to have forgotten that her son died a couple of months ago. Tart.

The introduction of Honor Blackman has upset me somewhat. Wife-swapping wrinklies is scary and wrong.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
ken barlow = back to his best. i love it when he gets all righteous and wordy and banging the table with his fist.

barlows vs baldwins = it's like old times again.

i'm also looking forward to shelley's outburst at gail tomorrow night.

mike and deirdre = any chance of them rekindling their romance at some point in the near-ish future? penny's out of the way, and there's still something between them fo sho.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I know the whole programme is pretty poor at the moment, but I do fancy that Irish vet.

Also, how cute are all the puppies!

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Gail is a psycho. I swear some of the scenes with her and her son have a considerable amount of sexual tension

it's funny ronan should say this - i never picked up on it fwiw - but i get this vibe off jamie and his recovering alcoholic biological mother carol. her affection for him doesn't seem very...motherly...

does anyone think corrie are moving towards their first incestuous storyline? not a full-blown relationship of course, but perhaps she will make a pass at her son, or somesuch.

perhaps not.

didn't eastenders have a plotline like this before, or something?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Martin Kemp and Sheila Hancock (mother and son). They only snogged, but not a pretty sight for anyone.

JTS, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I think she will make a pass at him and drive him into Frankie's arms and he and Frankie will live happily ever after. I have thought this for some time though. Well, at least since he had his hair cut.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and there was the whole "Kat got raped by her uncle who is Zoe's dad" thing, but that was only a 10 minute soliloquy and was then quickly forgotten. And then Sharon and her "brother" Dennis, but there is debate about that.

JTS, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen the potential for Jamie and Carol, but I too am convinced he will end up with Frankie. Where's Warren gone, by the way, I missed it for a few weeks a while back.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

He's gone to Spain to play football. He and Candice will have their own spin-off DVD exclusive when The Quo tour near his club and the two young lovers meet up again in the sunshine.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

So, em, am I the only one who was expecting Kevin Webster to tell Rosie to put some clothes on before she went to work? It's like BAM! suddenly she has breasts all over the front of her chest.

accentmonkey, Friday, 3 August 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I missed last night's episode. She was much better as a creepy miserabilist goth.

Steve and Eileen are the only people worth watching in Corrie just now (oh, and Lloyd, sometimes, for rofflez, and I quite like Kelly too (is it Kelly? The one that works in the cafe - isn't the one from the factory with the ludicrously bright clothes called Kelly as well? Have I got this wrong? My brain hurts today)), but this holiday thing is making them ridiculous too. I cannot believe what they have done to lovely Violet, making her all broody and desperate at her age, also Ashley/Casey = ridiculous. Yet, somehow, I still keep watching.

ailsa, Saturday, 4 August 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

The one in the cafe is Becky

V, Saturday, 4 August 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

That's the one! Anyway, I like her, she is classic Corrie character material, I think.

ailsa, Saturday, 4 August 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

What is annoying me right now about Corrie and the whole Ashley/Casey thing is how it all started because Ashley could talk to her about Claire and Casey was all positive and upbeat and they had a chat about how Casey was also so positive and helpful and cheerful and could turn anything round and she was so different from Claire etc etc and they TOTALLY FORGOT that the only reason Casey was around was that she was a client from when Claire worked for the samaritans/similar helpline and she was all desperate and sad and Claire was the helpful positive one, gah, inconsistencies.

ailsa, Saturday, 4 August 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Also, given what a mentaller Claire's original boyfriend turned out to be, the one who plastered the street with posters saying "Claire loves Ashley" or something just after Claire went to work for him, well, you'd think she'd be a little less gullible.

I guess that soap operas do rely on the gullibility of their characters, and you only really realise as a viewer that the writing isn't up to par when you find yourself taking stock in this way.

I also love Becky. She's one of the great strengths of Corrie, in that she used to be bad and now she's loveable.

I missed a bit a while back. Did they explain Les's disappearance at all? I know why the actor is gone, but where has Les gone?

accentmonkey, Saturday, 4 August 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

He's gone to be a roadie, I think.

ailsa, Saturday, 4 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

He was only supposed to be off doing that for a few weeks, but the actor has left for good now. Apparently there's going to be a storyline about that in a few months that explains what's happened to him.

V, Saturday, 4 August 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Right, I have a new Corrie question. I know that Vera is leaving. Does anyone know what's supposed to happen?

Also lolz at the two residents in the home where Cilla is working:

"Gobby mare. But she's got a nice arse."
"Yeah, I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crisps."
"You wouldn't kick anyone out of bed, you've no feeling left in your legs."

accentmonkey, Monday, 20 August 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Don't think they've announced it yet, but she isn't being killed off. I can't see how they can write her out and not Jack though, they couldn't possibly split them up.
