The Pokemon/Yo-Gi-Oh/Etc CCGs

Yeah yeah yeah kiddie crack and so on, but are these actually any good? Like, as games? I heard some eight-year-olds trash-talking YGO on the way to the library and it made me all happy, but nostalgic for MTG and Netrunner and that at the same time. So, does anyone play these? How about computerized versions? I can't really afford to be spending bazillions on useless pieces of paper these days, but a GBA rom or a couple of starter kits or something might be kinda fun...

Pokemon is a great game!

My son (8) is really into Yu-Gi-Oh and has a collection of cards. He found some rare card sets on eBay and asked me to bid on them saying they were 'only' 40.00 GBP (opening bid). I tried playing the game with him once but it seemed really complicated and uninteresting (to me).

Here he is, going through his cards the other day.

Cool! More info, y'all! (Especially David's son, aw). Can you have decent match with just two starter kits? Are they strategic, or is it just deckbuilding? Does anyone in Britain fancy a game?

Previous Magic thread:

Magic: The Gathering C/D

The cheapest way to play is to ask a serious player for his (or her - ha ha, doubt it) junk cards. They will be happy to unload some of that for cheap or free.

There is also a free Magic simulator, "Apprentice", but you don't get the nifty card artwork.

The biggets factors in winning, from greatest to least:
1) Deck build
2) Luck
3) In game strategy.

I'm already on that thread, mtgfan! But asking for junk cards is a great idea - do Pokemon or Yu-gi-Oh have "land" equivalents, or would any 40-or-so cards be a valid (if crappy) deck?

I think I've played my share of Magic, for now - isn't Apprentice great, though? And do you fancy that memory magic matchup over on that thread?
