Newshound, I admire your enthusiasm, but the words 'old news' don't begin to encompass this. Sanctions have been mooted for a while, Syria's been targeted for a while, the sanctions would have been announced some time back but the death of Hamas's leader (the sheikh, not his short-lived replacement) resulted in a postponement.

In this case it's not the sanctions that interest me but the timing of the announcement.

There's no way they'd go after Syria militarily... Syria is not the same at all, they're pretty badass. They have an airforce and everything.

I believe Cheney or some other nut in Bush's administration has talked in the past about the possibility of regime change in Syria. (Wasn't it on one of Israel's wish lists to the U.S. as well? I think so.)

Given the ever-squelching morass right next door, BushCo seriously thinking about Syria right now strikes me more as bemusing than anything else.

i liked this part:

The White House had no immediate comment and there was no word on whether the sanctions included anticipated curbs on future U.S. investments in Syria by American energy companies.

Q: How many US servicemen does it take to pave the Middle East?
A: 100,000 if you spread them thin enough.

(you get the point though...)

Bush imposes export ban against Syria

(Washington-AP) -- President Bush has signed an order banning U-S exports to Syria, except for food and medicine.
Today's action is the exclamation point to long-standing U-S complaints that Syria supports militant groups and has failed to stop guerillas from crossing its border with Iraq.
Annual trade between the U-S and Syria totals about 300 (m) million dollars.
There are a few exemptions to the ban.
A State Department official says the sale of aircraft spare parts will still be allowed -- to prevent any danger to Syrian commercial planes. And communications equipment can be sold, to allow Syrians access to outside information.

I find it particularly rude of the administration this. My social calendar is already bursting at the seams for that week. Who, I demand to know, are these dreadful people?
