I don't have a TV and I don't have a watch. What do you do without?

Tom, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a cell phone.

Samantha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A car. It kills me. Also a DVD player. Also cable. Also a LP player which kills me as much as the car.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

watch. shampoo.

Alan at home, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I also don't have a mobile phone, a car, a turntable, a table, and a dishwasher. I'll be getting one of these things soon.

Tom, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a tv or a cell phone either.

Norman Phay, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A watch, a car, a cell phone, independence, a digital camera....

Maria, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No car here.

Sean, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A car. It kills me.

No car = pleasure. No auto insurance payments, no gas payments, no maintenance issues, no worries of theft, no car wash concerns, *plenty* of spare cash for more music and good things. Hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have had no Tv for 18 months now and its is heaven, I can watch DVDs of good films or series on may laptop. I have no dishwasher either but would really like one of these, especially since its my turn to do the washing up.

Ed, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But if you live in the suburbs or country, no car means you have no means of transportation to anywhere more than a few miles away or where you want to look nice unless you are willing to beg and become indebted to people.

Maria, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't own a watch. But is that really doing without? I don't want a watch.

Ally, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Admittedly a concern, so I'm not pretending it's an ideal state. And I should note that my not having a license does have something to do with it. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a watch. Or a girlfriend. Or a robotic butler.

james, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, I wish I still had a dish washer. And a washer/dryer in the building would be nice. Woe is me.

bnw, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People tell me I need to get a watch because I am late all the time but that's the point of not having one. I don't have to rush.

Maria, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Money.

DavidM, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned -- How do you live in LA without a car! That's impressive. You're right about the extra expense.

I didn't get a watch until age 30, but now I love it. Reconsider that one.

No cell, no cable TV (some people consider this going without) no DVD player (I don't care about that, really) -- the worst of all -- NO CD BURNER! This is number one. Then a laptop. Then a minidisc player.

Mark, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No CD Burner yes. Grr.

I don't have an umbrella which is starting to become rather urgent'n'key.

Tom, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CD burner = heaven for first month then hell of guilt. wish for money instead.

Maria, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, no dishwasher, no washer and dryer, no health insurance. We just got cable a couple of weeks ago but half the time it doesn't work right. bleh.

Samantha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gurlfriend <sob>

also, car, dishwasher etc - but these are hardly essentials. in fact, i find loading/uploading a dishwasher infinitely more annoying that washing up. car is probably an inconvenience in London. hooray for public transport

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No TV, no watch, No DVD player, no umbrella, no personal golf course...

(SIGNIFAKINT others don't count, as I'm guessing the jist of this here is doing without material possessions..)

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Things missing from my life: A VCR and a Björk LP. I'd also like my minidisc walkman fixed.

Graham, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not have a hairspray fringe or scrunchies

, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no t.v., no life

tim, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CD burner = heaven for first month then hell of guilt

I am going without guilt....and a hedge trimmer.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am still going without most of my clothes as they are still in john street N.Y., N.Y.

Ed, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned -- How do you live in LA without a car!

Quite easily these days, actually, and I should note I do actually live in Orange County rather than LA. I'm still wondering how Brian survives Seattle without an umbrella!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not have breasts. I am very happy about this and will do whatever I can to maintain this happy state of affairs. (So far this week I've done 80 pushups. I'm not a manly man, but I do have bulging pecs of steel.)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still wondering how Brian survives Seattle without an umbrella! BIG
ASS
TREES

(and in Ned's defense, I was a carless Orange Countian for a while -- though looking back, given my rampant concert attending lifestyle, I don't what I'd do without one)

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have a computer. i have to post to ile using internet telepathy.

hamish, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good looks.

I would die without a watch though...

Nicole, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a trip to europe

anthony, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A shower. A car. A computer. A garden. A career ladder. A wallet. A bedside table. A temper. A team.

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A home... a place I can call my own... a private conversation on the telephone... wake up every day, that would be a start. Then I would not complain about my wounded heart!

kate, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a win at the pub quiz......sobs

chris, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite possibly a piñata, hideously. Curse the timescale of papier maché and also going for beer and curry and Powerpuff Girls instead of home-made crafts. Ok, change that to AUTHENTIC piñata, I am sure I CAN HACK ONE if need be.

I'm missing the modern interweb at home. And subsequently lots of eBay auctions and emulator fun. I'm missing a VCR, a DVD player, a cd player that WILL JUST PLAY THE SONGS dammit and I don't have to punch to try and get sounds from both speakXors... I am also missing the clear 7" of Gwenn Ni Goffen by Gorkys Zygotic Mynci. I have the b- sides on tape but it's not exactly the same. I have everything they ever did up to Gorky 5 which to be honest is rubbidge. APART FROM GWENN NI GOFFEN curses chiz.

Oh god.

Also I am missing a Stannah stairlift and one of those old peoples batmobiles. And a trampoline. And a proper hard DDR mat. The plastic one slips about something rotten. And a big screen TV. And a front room.

However I still have some homebaked oatmeal cookies left. Ah well, All The Small Things as hem hem Blink 182 would sa.

Sarah, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the old school CD-R. Philips=quality.

james, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a win at the pub quiz......sobs

But Chris we did win. Or joint win, anyway.

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gorky 5 which to be honest is rubbidge.

When you say this I start thinking I have got a temper after all. I'm not sure I want to ever see your stupid face again.

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not want to see yours either which is a good job as I do not intend going to your LAIR ie HADES, get thee behind me ect. You mong.

Sarah, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a car. I vaguely feel it's lack, but as someone who lives in the city centre and has never driven I basically don't miss what I don't know. I could theoretically get myself a car (second hand cars cost nuppence in Ireland) and learn how to drive and stuff, but I'd probably pay more than my appartment for a parking space.

I don't have a TV, and I don't think I'm missing very much.

DV, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No cellphone. No *functioning* turntable. I have a dishwasher but it doesn't work right now and I can't be bothered to stay home from work to get it fixed.

No boyfriend...waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

j.lu, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I live without heating, a passport, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster (Sarah. Stop insulting Nick and get thee to Harrow. We need to burn bread ever so slightly)I also have no ear lobes, or a watch. Or a bicycle, or a coffee table, or an overdraft, or a credit card, or a tenancy agreement. I do own a foot spa.

Ed, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since age 22 I've also gone without an appendix. I never miss it.

Mark, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

However I never go anywhere without Mark's appendix. I carry it in a velvet-lined case.

mark s, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lixi, you quite clearly had a sandwich toaster when I was there, which (in my severely abbreviated knowledge of domestic appliances and flour based snack food), while technically only an isotope of a true toaster, can be used to burn bread ever so slightly.

So either you a liar, or you and your dream demon have raided my BWANE and stumbled upon my discovery that sandwich toasters are really just one big hoax perpetrated my Pete Waterman for his own wicked ends and don't really exist.

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a stove or an oven. Other than my microwave oven, that is.

toraneko, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck.

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Been a while, has it?

RickyT, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Sara's not putting out.

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(NB As I said to her yesterday)

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Sara the new divine LC?

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think she'd rather be the Divine S-MW.

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh - double-barrelled! Get him.

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pay attention to the hyphen please Nick. Not posh; from Nashville, Tennessee.

Graham, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No car. I don't even know how to drive. Whenever I mention this to someone in the Greater New York Metropolitan area, they invariably say "OH MY GOD! And you grew up in the suburbs, too! How did you ever survive?" I'm fucking sick of people asking this.

No cellphone. I have no need for it, though after 9/11 I toyed with getting one.

No dishwasher. I'd like one but my new apartment has no room.

No wide-screen TV. I know that hardly sounds like deprivation, but I know a number of suburban families in a certain socio-economic level who consider them absolutely essential. I don't need one because I have no intention of playing a DVD of Jurassic Park at ear- splitting levels to show off overpriced media toys anytime soon.

No watch. Actually, I do have several watches -- I just never wear them. The last watch I wore on a regular basis lasted for only two weeks before it mysteriously popped off my wrist while I was riding between two old LIRR diesel cars.

No vacation. I haven't been on a "real" vacation (in other words, vacation time spent somewhere away from Long Island) since I was a teen. I am now 30.

No boyfriend. Help me.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No remote for the VCR or stereo. It makes me choose what I want to watch or listen to and stick to it. Also I end up sitting thru the "plot" bits of porn tapes and gain valuable insightSor into the characters' motivations.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No car. I don't even know how to drive. Whenever I mention this to someone in the Greater New York Metropolitan area, they invariably say "OH MY GOD! And you grew up in the suburbs, too! How did you ever survive?" I'm fucking sick of people asking this.

Mr. Daddino, meet Ms. Kearney. Who will never, ever invariably say that to you. I, also, cannot drive, nor do I have a car. That's what my friends are for, chauffers. Public transit, hello, what do you need a car for in this area? Assuming you aren't all the way out in Ronkonkoma or Wading River, you're basically fine.

I don't have a proper stereo, just a ghetto blaster and my computer.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thirteen years pass...

surely should start with "I don't even -own- ...." but a fair q nonetheless
