I don't know about the X-Files, but what's happened to The Simpsons
in the last few seasons is an absolute disgrace. The writers have
turned the greatest show of all time into a joyless meta-farce based
on the apparent premise that episodes don't need plots, believable
characters or situations, or even funny jokes - just a lot of random
shit happening. I think the last good episode was the one where Lisa
cheats on a test and Homer buys a lobster, and that was a couple
years ago.
I don't agree that early Simpsons was bad, however - that early
Christmas show is still much, much funnier than the more recent one
where Bart accidentally burns up all the presents. There was
something very original and strange about it back then - maybe it's
the lack of a laugh track. Now all the jokes on the show seem so
obvious and heavy-handed, they might as well start using a laugh
track.
