i think both of these shows could have ended their runs last season..the x-files lost mulder which ruined the scully/mulder team i loved and watched religiously for 3 years and the simpsons had a somewhat boring season last year. both of these shows had rumors of ending a few years ago so is it time or not for them to end? I don't watch X-Files, so no comment there.

But as for The Simpsons. That show is utter crap now and for the last 3 or so seasons. Early Simpsons sucks as well, and it seems that there was kind of a middle "high" period where every episode was ace, but that ended sometime around all the good writers took off.

Desperate celebrity cameo after desperate celebrity cameo does not equal entertainment. Facile and obvious political satire does not equal comedy. Taking well developed, sympathetic, and interesting characters and turning them into a spastic wad of worn out tics and catch-phrases, a la late Seinfeld, is the death of many a good sitcom.

I don't know about the X-Files, but what's happened to The Simpsons in the last few seasons is an absolute disgrace. The writers have turned the greatest show of all time into a joyless meta-farce based on the apparent premise that episodes don't need plots, believable characters or situations, or even funny jokes - just a lot of random shit happening. I think the last good episode was the one where Lisa cheats on a test and Homer buys a lobster, and that was a couple years ago.

I don't agree that early Simpsons was bad, however - that early Christmas show is still much, much funnier than the more recent one where Bart accidentally burns up all the presents. There was something very original and strange about it back then - maybe it's the lack of a laugh track. Now all the jokes on the show seem so obvious and heavy-handed, they might as well start using a laugh track.

Today, on the blackboard outside my college chapel is written 'The Simpsons. The discussion'. Maybe the Chaplain reads ILE.

The X-Files? Jesus, that should have ended after the second season.

Why is Xena The Warrior Princess on the X-Files now? I saw that on a commercial.

The Simpsons has been for at least two years one of the worst shows on the face of the planet.

Dang, The Xfiles are going on this year or is it just because their behind in England? The Simpsons last season was a huge improvement of the last three or four I thought but I dont have a tv so its the only show I get to watch (sometimes Malcom in the Middle which borders on near brilliant sometimes).

x files should end, shoud have done ages ago. I dont really watch the simpsons much but I have a lot of friends who enjoy quoting from it verbatim. So I would like to get rid of it except they would probably hunt me down and bludgeon me to death with a tightly rolled up TV guide
