I'm leaving new york for the summer in five days

God damnit, this sucks. Despite my love/hate relationship with NYC, I have a sinking feeling that suburban Rhode Island will be much worse. So anyway, hopefully I'll see a lot of you NYC ilx0rs at the show this Saturday, but if not I'll be back for shows, etc. over the summer. Acid Mothers Temple & SubArachnoid space in like, two weeks or something, even.

Anyway, tell me about your first summer home after college. Is it awful and bleak and empty? Did you fuck lots of high school hotties?

my first summer home after college was IN new york city, so no!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if I remember much about it, to be honest. Other than I was drunk a lot.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You get to hang out with the bitter, depressed, alcoholic townies.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realize it was such a big deal.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian....are you an NYU guy or something?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

summer before college was more memorable: I was an ice-cream man.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't remember much, either. not a very eventful time, i guess. i never liked high school boys much even when i was close to their age, so a definite no to that one.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be at the acid mothers temple show!

dude stence you were an ice-cream man?! tell us more!!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm trying to picture this. what'd your truck play? tony conrad? terry riley?

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I needed cash, and I couldn't find a regular job. I got to drive around the East Jefferson County suburbs all day dealing with snotty kids and their crabby mothers - one of the worst routes for the company (best route was unsurprisingly Fort Knox - soldiers like ice cream after 15-mile runs). Most of my co-workers were some of the strangest urban-rednecks I'm ever likely to meet - and if I remember properly, one of 'em got busted for selling weed that summer. Thankfully I spent most of the time in a super-hot (not hot as in "wow neato" but hot as in "boiling") van with no A/C, no radio and not even a regular ice-cream song but a shitty-ass bell.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

on the days I took a radio with me, I was likely to blast the Jesus Lizard's Goat on repeat.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

on my last day of work, Rodan was playing at Uncle Pleasant's. I parked out front and invited all of my punk rock friends to raid the freezer. I think I lost like $40 that day.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

best ice-cream man ever.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had a lot of fucking weird jobs, that's for sure.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

also that was the summer I nearly got arrested. Okay, you're saying "what does 'nearly' mean?" Well I mean interrogated by the Louisville PD in a cemetary for 3 hours on a Friday night but not having to go to jail is what I mean.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

[insert that pic of a young rollins and ian mackaye serving ice cream that i am too lazy to google for]

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Were the police trying to solve the mystery of the empty ice cream truck?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaha no, and that's all I'm going to say.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My first summer after college was pretty much like the preceding and subsequent summers, except it was the only one of the three in which my roommates included a concrete pink lawn flamingo hanging from the ceiling and a steel traffic barricade that flashed orange at night.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think, for the most part, I was miserable thru most of that summer (like most of college). I worked at a record store though.... That was alright.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 13 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I never went back home.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I never left my hometown. I was a bitter, depressed alcoholic townie.

I worked at a restaurant on the lake, drank crazy amounts of free booze, fell for a rich girl slumming as a hostess, and got a DWI at the tail-end of the summer.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

milo is Patrick Swayze!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto teeny. It never even occurred to me to go back to my mother's house, and I'm always slightly startled by people who flit back and forth during college -- even though I had to jump through a million bureaucratic hoops to be able to live off campus, without which I wouldn't have been able to stay. Go figure.

(A contributing factor is probably that my mother moved into a new house two days before I left town, so "going back" wasn't possible -- there was no "my room" for me to move back into, etc.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, tell me about your first summer home after college. Is it awful and bleak and empty?

I lived at home while going to college, so this doesn't apply at all. I was still working the same jobs (graveyard-shift manufacturing job, delivering cars for an auto broker, etc.). I saw the Meat Puppets a lot.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I never went back home.

me neither! i went to summer school and took baths every day at noon and generally went to seed!
