Fletch: Chevy or Dud

Before the Brass Eye thread gets sidetracked to the subject of possibly Chevy Chase's finest movie - I thought it deserved a thread of its own. And under consideration is the film Fletch, the somewhat lacklustre sequel Fletch Lives, the long and fantastic Fletch series of comic crime novels by Gregory Macdonald and the current plans for Kevin Smith to make a new Fletch movie with Jason Lee.

How's that for starters?

Classic. Is Jason Lee 'Jay'?

chris, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nope - that's Jason Mewes. Lee was the one that wasn't Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy.

Fletch = default dud (seen it, can't remember it). Suspect only Chevy classic is Vacation; that was kewl. And European Vacation didn't completely suck = good result for cash-in sequel.

Fletch is a classic, CHevy Chase's best work, by far. It was also the last thing he made that wasn't bad enough to cause siezures.

Did anyway see his dreadful movie "Nothing But Trouble"? Outside of perhaps "Boxing Helena" that is the worst piece of filth I have ever seen.

Wasn't the soundtrack by Harold "Axel-f" Faltermeyer, and quite good to boot?

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yep, the Fletch theme is even better than Axel F as fifteen year olds don't constantly play it on casio keyboards in Dixons.

Have none of you read the books. I guess this area is to high minded for comic crime fiction (yet not too high minded for Porky's II. Hmm.)

Comic crime fiction - Donald E. Westlake is the Daddy of 'em all...

Andrew L, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Donald E.Westlake is indeed the Daddy of comic crime fiction. The beauty of Macdonald though is in his taught dialogue (which you can therefore see in film form). I learnt aaall I know about US politics from Fletch And The Man Who (Might become the next President Of The USA).

I've joined this a bit late but let's get back to Chevy. The Three Amigos is surely his greatest film. If you haven't seen it for ten years because up until recently it has been denied us on video then I recommend you watch it again. It is, simply, fantastic. Chevy steals the show as Dusty Bottoms, although El Guapo does provide some stiff competition.

I have two words for you - "Foul Play". Another chance to see a hair- brained car chase around San Francisco, dwarves, albinos, Barry Manilow soundtrack, pervy Dudley Moore. My god, this film is sheer perfection.

Kate, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My word, Yes. Foul Play is fantastic, particularly Dudley Moore's little cameo. Can anyone pull a better confused face in cinema than Chevy Chase?

I don't doubt Chevy Chase as a fine comedian, which is illustrated in 70's SNL episodes as well as a few Vacation films. However, Fletch was not a good movie because Chase did not have the means to portray the book Fletch. The Fletch in the book is much cooler and hard to break. Chevy Chase in Fletch (as well as all his movies) seems a lot more jittery and clumsy. He may try to act cool to play off foolishness, but is only cool to play it off. I don't know who will play Irwin Maurice Fletcher in Kevin Smith's movie, but they had better be good. Maybe Jason Lee, but it had better not (and I mean it) be Ben Affleck. Of course, Matt Damon wouldn't be too bad.

my favourite gag is how he gives all these fake names - "I'm sorry I didn't catch your name Mr...?" "Nugent. Ted Nugent."

AP i think yr wrong about this one, i reckon you'd prob. like it a lot.

I hated it at the time and I'm sure I'd hate it again.

Reagan had just been re-elected by a landslide when the film hit theaters in 1985, and Fletch reflects, in a strange and roundabout way, an era of wrenching liberal despair. While the enlightened bourgeoisie and their scruffy spawn were no longer running the country, they could at least laugh along with Chevy Chase as he poked fun at Reagan's America—the nouveau riche, the pig-headed cops, the Mormons.

What the fuck is this shit?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 28 May 2007 03:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Fletch is an all-time classic.

"Ah, that's a terrific wing. I love this shape!"

"I'm a shepherd."

"Yeah, do you have the Beatles White Album?"

"I rent 'em. I have a lease with an option to buy."

"I like men. I like to be manhandled. I like youuuu."

"Yeah, but I mean the very end, when he actually died. That was extremely sudden."

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 28 May 2007 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

that scene makes no sense.

s1ocki, Monday, 28 May 2007 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Fletch is so abominably bad because it's trying to be a slobs vs. snobs comedy, but all the while, Fletch is the biggest snob of them all.

OH FUCK OFF STUPID SLATE GUY GREGORY MCDONALD WROTE THE NOVEL IN 1974 FOUR YEARS BEFORE ANIMAL HOUSE CAME OUT

I've never seen it, but the closing credits song is so fun.

There's a great article in the new EW about why the Fletch reboot remains in limbo after about a thousand tries to get it going (and several lead actors turning it down).

I'm kind of hoping it never happens. Did we not learn our lessons from The Pink Panther reboot?

We watched Confess, Fletch last night, and it was surprisingly good. The trailer made it look like the worst thing ever filmed, but in retrospect that seems to be because the trailer is trying to sell it as one of those Judd Apatow/Anchorman type ensemble comedies, but this isn't that at all. It's very low key, plot focused, nice and short, and an excellent use of the Hammster. I recommend it.
