s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I love stuff like this. Must make a mental note to scrounge up the tales.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the Ponzi book.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you didn't buy it in some sort of dubious profit-making scheme did you?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, have you read the big con?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That I have not. Do tell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

david maurer was a linguist in the 1930s who set out to make a study of underworld slang. specifically he began to focus on confidence men, and ended up writing what amounted to an ethnography/history/linguistic analysis of the con man subculture as it existed then! unbelievably fascinating and really well-written to boot!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I want every one of these

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like the sound of that, Slocki!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

*swoon*

i want these

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I so had to resist not buying all three at Pegasus yesterday. It's a bonus that they also have a quite wonderful aesthetic going for them.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah they look niiiiiice. how much?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

A love of thieves, scoundrels and lowlifes.

Luc Sante is general editor of the Library of Larceny (Broadway Books). His books include Low Life, Evidence, and The Factory of Facts. He teaches writing and the history of photography at Bard College. (September 2004)

Since Luc Sante is invoked in this thread, I'll link an older blogpost from Mike McGonigal here to note he has a collection of Sante's essays coming out later in the year, Kill All Your Darlings. Having only just gotten around to Sante's essay writing (yeah yeah, I'm slack), I gotta say this is going to be a treat and a half.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh cool. i agree. treat point five.

Luc Sante submitted a playlist for the Times's Living with Music blog that includes lots of vintage dancehall reggae (plus The Fall):

The great Luc Sante, who has so long navigated time, space, and much else, has joyfully announced on instagram she is transitioning and is now called Lucy. I wish her luck, happiness, and many more years of work.
