David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have 1,800+ words down - so far, one of my main characters hooked up with an ex-girlfriend. Hot stuff, lemme tell ya.

David Raposa, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're writing too quick for my blood, but that's time zones for ya. ;-) I'm about up to 1000.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey y'all...

Work in Progress

Warning: Contains language that some people may find offensive and seens of an adult nature.

48986 words to go!

james, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Less than 1000 words, but I've already fit in an anal sex scene and a double-murder. I am da MAN.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow! go Dan!...You could have 100 corpses by the end at that rate!

james, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

While Dan is have perverse fun, I am far more sane. Or am I? Anyway, first chapter down, I am aiming at 2000 words a day. Go here to keep tracks of things as I add to it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will never get beyond the first three pages! SOB.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you mean? You can't have already written yourself into a corner!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I have no plot, so I've spent today fleshing out how much of a bastard one particular character is. I've suddenly realized that after this first chapter, I want him to vanish into thin air and now I have nothing to write about. I didn't really want to insert grocery lists and a loving description of every article of clothing that I own into this thing, but how else am I going to get the word count up?

Perhaps I should stop whining and write.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite so, my son. :-) Finding an actual course of events to write on has always been my main concern with fiction, but I stumbled across an idea that I quite liked. We'll see how it goes.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Writing about an anal control freak's daily routine is DRAINING.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the coolest thing ever in the whole of today! I can't wait to find out what happens next with the freezer dude...

Kim, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

884 down. I'm in a grubby recording studio in Scotland and the hero's ex just committed suicide in Southampton.

chris, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and nano's been hacked.

chris, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As I said on my blog I've had to pull out cos of my work situation, but I'm really impressed by how everyone's doing! (Though I did write some stuff yesterday...)

Tom, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the hero's ex just committed suicide in Southampton.

An interesting challenge would be to make the hero commit suicide that early on and then have the rest of the novel carry on without the use of flashbacks. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or I should finish it with you unsure whether he did or not. I'll leave him on the Isles of Scilly in 49000 words' time...

chris, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I have no plot, so I've spent today fleshing out how much of a bastard one particular character is. I've suddenly realized that after this first chapter, I want him to vanish into thin air and now I have nothing to write about.

Have another character off him (accidentally or by more nefarious means) and then look for ways to cover up the death/avoid being caught.

Nicole, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I will have 3000 words by the end of today. But, I've hardly eaten, so I'm not fit to type.

james, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But what I can say is, Mr X and a secret key.

james, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan...your character could disappear, and the rest of the story, could be in past tense, finding out about the character etc...a discovery of a diary, videotapes etc...Incompentent police investigation etc...That's what I'd do!

james, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

James, Nicole: Those are both good ideas. I think what I really want to do, though, is use this bastard character and his disappearance as the prime motivation for the behavior of his kids, whom I've just decided shuld be the main characters. I'll write a dodgy SF epic yet!

Of course, I haven't written a word today. SIGH.

Dan Perry, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Next chapter down, whee. I'll have that up later today, possibly with another one.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5000 words. EAT MY DUST, SUCKAZ.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I took a break from writing today. I don't wish to burn out. Tomorrow, I am writing an in-depth description of a train journey.

james, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5,200 words. That's about on pace (going by the 1,600+ word/day limit). I stopped trying to follow a linear timeline (given that I don't have a plot), and had my other main character go on a little first-person bender regarding women and his slightly off-center, holier-than-thou ideas about 'em (which might not be too far off from my own gutless misconceptions - eek).

I should be writing a racy SF novel about a sex drug that makes people uncontrollably horny and excessively voluptuous / endowed. And I should blow up lots of stuff, too. Maybe for my next book.

David Raposa, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should collaborate with Dan P. on that one, David, it would be a match made in heaven. ;-) Planning on two more chapters tomorrow, at which point I'll do a massive upload on the site to keep things running.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In my novel...Bobby Ewing is going to step out of the shower and realise it was all a dream, then Buffy will kill him coz he's really a vampire.

james, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

2,200 words in 2 hours!...I could finish by late Tuesday, if I keep typing non-stop! :)

james, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reconfigured my Work in Progress page...nice purple table and new condensed writing!

I have no shame, the same link twice in the same thread

james, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

E.Johnston is v.cool, James, with his "goatee beard and greasy unkempt beard"

mark s, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can be my editor if you like Mark! :)...

The continuity will be FuXored by abt 10,000 words!

james, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Up to 6000 words or so, and hopefully another chapter ahead in the next few hours. I'm finding that I can't just keep racing along -- every 2000 words gives me a vaguely logical ending point for a chapter and gives me time to think of the next one.

Amusement -- my biggest problem with fiction has been coming up with some sort of overarching structure. In this case, I consciously borrowed one from somewhere else and have enjoyed watching it quietly mutate.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't started on mine b/c I've been too busy reading! perhaps I should give up?

Samantha, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, just let it happen as it does. Or you could just change the names and write a 50,000 word meditation on Hank and his qualities. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a breakthrough last night; the novel is going to be all about the bastard's daughter. As a result, I get to graft some comic book ideas I had when I was in junior high onto the plot. Whee!

Dan Perry, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hope everyone's novel is going okay! I'm thinking movie deals for mine. No writing today. Tomorrow I shall describe the vapour trails left by aeroplanes, and a sunset on a bright cold day.

james, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Movie deals already? They'll gut your work and smack you in the face. ;-) Besides, you stole my plan as well, so fooey. I figure indie cinema with me, though. ;-) Up to 8000 words, viva. My 2000 word chapter a day plan is holding...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Such was the lot of the Business History lecturer," is my favourite line so far, James.

rosemary, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Rosemary!

Ah Ned you'll see, I'll be at Cannes next year, then getting my Oscar in 2003! :)

I've decided to kill off superfluous Steve. I just can't decide how he'll go though. Words to write....

james, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My novel's proving to be a laborious bore. Plus I miscounted - I'm just under 6,000 words. Oink. I might have to bring in my comic book ideas - the Egyptian gem / Stonehenge / government super-team / alien conspiracy / time travel thing. With some hari kari thrown in.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*bows in acknowledgment* Likely enough, dear James. ;-) Me, right now I'm now seeing if I can work with a record store setting without invoking High Fidelity -- and so far I'm not, or so I hope! That's Chapter 5 just down now, and I've broken the 10,000 word barrier, rock. Just to go ahead and post that link again -- sorry about the screwy punctuation, I'm too impatient to redo everything for HTML properly.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, i finally made it over 1000 words this morning. but then again i am a minimalist ;)

maura, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only just got back from Sri Lanka, but do have a solid plot and characters in my head so later instead of being jetlagged I may jump in to the fishpond. I know I can make that word limit as long as I don't go to the pub every night....

Pete, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you might be better off writing the novel in the pub. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Progress is slow...but hopefully tomorrow I will get some stuff done.

james, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*beats down some more chapters* Right, up to 16000 words. I seem to be veering between hyperdetail and swift leaps in time. Hm... Well, I'll post the new chapters tomorrow...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow! Ned you are on target! I'm still down at 6,000 words! I hope to get 3,000 done today. My time frame is so far 3 days.

james, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a SLACKER. I've only written 2000 words. Still, at least I know what's going to happen for the next couple of chapters.

Dan Perry, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Always good to have a plan. ;-) Anyway, chapters 7 and 8 are now posted. I should say my whole plan is to have everything happen in the course of a day, so I'm using flashbacks and reflections extensively, or perhaps will be doing so. Then again, I'm also of the opinion that more can easily happen in a day than might be realized! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

did I say I was writing 3000 words today? Forget that...I played indoor football today, and I'm knackered. Scored seven goals though!

james, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicely done. :-) Now you have to introduce that element to your novel. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*writes writes writes* Damn, I'm on a roll or something, I think I've found my rhythm. Anyway, chapters 9 and 10 are now up, and I've hit the 20,000 mark. Yow! I hope to finish two more chapters later today, if possible.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*comes up for air* Wow, this is nuts. I've actually reached the halfway point, 25,000 words! Chapters 11 and 12 are done and posted, and I'm halfway through chapter 13. I think I'll stop here for tonight, but hopefully I might even get to 30,000 by tomorrow before I head out for the show. Kewl. Perhaps I'll be done by Thanksgiving at this rate, but we'll see...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to report (for the record) that my novel is officially stillborn. Chances of resuscitation are slim, but there is some hope. Just over 6,000+ words. And it's all blech.

David Raposa, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, don't fret about it, David -- remember the official aim is quantity not quality. Just pull a Flann O'Brien and have your characters protest at the plot and then create a new one. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*writes more and more* Yow. Okay, 30,000 words reached! What a bizarrely productive weekend. Anyway, my goal is clear -- finish this by Thanksgiving. I think it can be done...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I really want to buy into that "quantity is EVERYTHING" rhetoric - I was espousing that stuff just a couple of weeks ago - but, damn it, it's tough. Duh. Maybe I'll just pop some Nyquil and wait to get really, really, really sleepy.

David Raposa, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the next 4 hours I'm going to write!

james, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned - you appear to be experiencing the speed writing rush - the one I get whenever I set about writing a novel. A natural high akin to - well probably akin to a good shit but you get my drift.

Pete, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An interesting comparison -- but it works. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still stuck on 7000 words. But I just wrote a plan. I can do this. Ned has inspired me with his lightening pace!

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go *forth* young James. Now at 34,000.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*writes writes writes...* 38,000 and the end is very much in sight, six chapters to go. James, m'friend, how fares it with you?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote a plan! I know where the story goes now...I have a whole day free tomorrow to write! I'm doubtful is my novel will be 50,000 though! You will be a NaNoWriMo hall of famer, well done Ned!!

james, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, franks. But let's see if the novel is any good (yes, I am aiming for quality and quantity, dammit, and I will make it work). Anyway, now up to 40,000 and about finishing another chapter to make it 42,000. I think my plan is to finish everything tomorrow. :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am very envious of you, young master raggett, as i never even started mine.

however, now that i have a collaborator, i am going to begin work on the *childrens* book i've been promising to do forever.

jess, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Collaborate with me on a Carrie the Catfish story. I will finish that eventually.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm...shall i ask my illustratrix if she can draw catfishes?

jess, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We should start the rival "ILE childrens book month" for December...min 10,000 words :)

james, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck yeah, why not? Only I think a collaborative effort is the answer here. ;-) Maybe we should start a new thread...in fact...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FINISHED! Woohoo! Finished at 3 pm today and celebrated with the grand Zwan show later that evening. 50,000 words, yow...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned = speed writing genius! Blooming heck! Well done guv'ner!

james, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, now I've got to revise the damn thing...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
