What do you think of Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy?

Those who know: why are they famous etc? THose who don't: whatchoo think? bonus question: what about those 2 guys (or is it 1?) who make animatronic sculptures of cartoon cowboys fucking each other? whaazup?

I saur an exhibition once of a Kelly-designed conference room. Walls adorned with "fax humor" murals ('workin hard? nope, hardly workin') etc. I liked that for some reason.

Wasn't Mike Kelly in Destroy All Monsters?

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know. But he did do the cover art for Sonic Youth's "Dirty".

Kelly is my favorite of the two. I couldn't list reasons, but he seems to make me laugh harder than McCarthy, who often leaves me merely grinning with disgust. Perhaps I admire Mike for his scatalogical eloquence--take this for example: "pants shitter & proud. PS I jerk off too (and I wear glasses)."

Both Kelly and McCarthy deal with similar subject matter (scatalogical humour, repressive family structures, the subversion of ideaological constructs, sex, "bad taste," violence, shit, stuffed animals, etc...). Both live in LA, and have collaborated on numerous occasions. Both artists work within the conceptual framework of 'post pop' and mine low culture for their subject matter. Both artists are concerned with 'taboo-smashing,'but this violence toward burgois morality is used in their work to explore the smbolic violence of social and media indoctrianation and is not an end in itself

I made Easter bonnets with Mike Kelley at a party once.

Yes, he was in Destroy All Monsters. Also in the band for Ann Magnuson's Luv Show album with fellow LA art bigwig Jim Shaw.

I know people who had him as a teacher at Cal Arts. I should ask them and get back to you, Tracer. Cause I don't really follow the local art scene too much.

Revive! McCarthy's new exhibition in a disused bank in Piccadilly is entertainingly fucked up. And really disconcerting, because it's all based around the disused bank which really feels only half refurbished, and like you're trespassing or something, especially the basement. I had no idea where the installation begins or ends.

A good friend of mine was his assistant for 5 years, his studio is in my neighborhood and I would see him around. Do they really think it was suicide?

This is awful. In a weird way, he was one of my favorite humorists in any medium, and yeah, he seemed like he had a lot more left to cover.

bentelec, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

Mike Kelley was a brilliant artist, although I think his best work was behind him. I like Paul McCarthy a lot, but Mike Kelley was in a different league. It's really sad.

Oh man.RIP. Here's John Wojtowicz's all-seeing eyewitness account of a Vienna art experience instigated by MK (mention of his music-related cred in my brief intro is just unnecessarily to rationalize posting it on mostly music blog, which is also why it was edited to emph music-related elements of exhibit, but basically still conveys where MK's approach was coming from)
