Red Bull: Classic or Dud?

I don't think anyone's mentioned it on the alcopops thread yet, so I thought I'd get in quick.

I can't make up my mind if it's great because it keeps you dancin' all night or dud because it tastes like a foul, viscous mix of Haribo, Jelly Tots and Irn Bru. Has anyone puked Red Bull? Does it taste the same going down as it does coming back up?

Madchen, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As a matter of fact, I believe I have puked it.
Red Bull is acidic enough - Red Bull + Stomach Acid...
well, you can imagine.

Kerry Keane, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud. Dud, dud, dud!!! I have drank it exactly twice in my life. The first time, I got very violent, started headbutting one of my friends, and ended the night running up and down a random street in Oxford screaming my head off.

Or maybe it's just Oxford that makes me violent and bad tempered drunk...

The only other time I've dared was before a gig in Portland, OR, where I was hungover as hell and unable to move because the night before Raggett and Barrus had taken me out and poured tequila down my throat all night. The Red Bulled night ended up in a dive bar full of scary Dandy Warhols rejects and a man dancing around with a pumpkin smashed over his own head.

Never touching the stuff again.

masonic boom, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It tastes like carbonated cough syrup. Made me extremely hyper, so it could come in handy again when I face another lack-of- sleep day. More a "meh", that in-between ground that's neither classic nor dud.

Nicole, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Red Bull, any of those caffeine drinks -- dud. It is amusing to watch undergrads around here pound those suckers down come finals, though.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am vexed by this mystery drink. I shall try it. Has anyone tried the new mountain dew "Core Red" ?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

New Mountain Dew = SCREAMING DUD. Avoid at all costs.

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've only had it once, unfortunately not while drunk (I feel this may be important). It had no discernible effect on me, but tasted like it contained a shovelful of glucose, a shovelful of sherbet, and perhaps the entire unsold supply of Parma Violets (which I love BTW). And it costs like £1.20 for a (thankfully) tiny can. Yueuesh.

Graham, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'Tis well grim. I spat out the first mouthful I drank and have never had the urge to try it again. There are much better ways of keeping yourself dancing all night than drinking something that tastes of deodorant.

"Tastes like deodorant"?

Now I'm looking forward to this!

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's only ever good when mixed with spirits in a ratio of roughly 2 shots to the half can. Preferably something light like Vodka.

Personally I think that if you want some caffeine what's wrong with a coffee you freaks?

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You are a SICK motherfucker, Dan. At least spike it with some vodka or *something.*

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Fact: until it caught on, Red Bull was under 50p a can and said "DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES MIX WITH ALCOHOL." I think they've got rid of the warning now, haven't they?

Fact: it's not meant to taste nice.

Fact: the best thing about it is that if you have around ten cans in a night, apart from the implications of the caffeine, you'll knock yourself out with the alcohol you mixed it with but then wake up at 7.30 the next morning when the effect of the caffeine peaks. Be quite interesting to know the medical implications of doing that too often.

By the way: vodka and Red Bull is not as good a Bull Shocker, which is the same but with a shot of Aftershock in. Can we explode the myth that Aftershock's strong? It has a strong taste, but that doesn't mean the same thing. Anyway, the reason it needs to be in a vodka Red Bull is because it makes it taste fucking lovely. The Bull Shocker has taken over from alcopops in my world.

Greg, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud, I think. Tastes horrible, although it still seems quite easily ingestible after a while of drinking it. But why not drink something nicer instead? I remember being fed it in an Edinburgh club once as I was falling asleep. I can't remember if it worked or not.

Comedy Red Bull story. Some canadians I know had heard about the whole vodkaredbull thing and thought they'd like to give it a try. Unfortunately in canadia Red Bull is a type of cooking lager which they dutifully poured the vodka into and wondered why they got drunk very very fast and received no form of caffiene high...

Classic, in small quantities. I went through an awful lot when finishing off my thesis, and have been treating it with respect ever since. It is, however, excellent for treating hangovers. It's not as fizzy or as acidic as Coke or Irn Bru, so it's much easier to keep it down when feeling a little queasy.

At college, I went for four days straight without sleep by drinking Red Bull with ProPlus. Combined with my usual daily caffeine intake. Ended up collapsing but my housemate couldn't take me to hospital because she was trying to seduce a boy in the kitchen. Haven't touched it since.

just pulled this from our daily: - WORLD

Red Bull under microscope in wake of three deaths

It's a favourite of shiftworkers, sportsmen, partygoers and the hungover - but the top-selling energy drink Red Bull is under investigation over fears it may be linked to three deaths in Sweden.

Wimbledon champ Goran Ivanisevic and his friends reached for the Red Bull and vodka as they partied through the night to celebrate his win over Pat Rafter on Monday.

But it appears they and thousands more in pubs, clubs and gyms around the world may be putting their lives in danger by mixing the drink with alcohol or drinking it after strenuous exercise.

Red Bull is already banned from all shops except pharmacies in Norway, Denmark and France, where it is classified as a medicine because of its high caffeine content.

The Swedish National Food Administration is now investigating the drink following three recent deaths.

A 31-year-old woman, known only as Therese, collapsed on a nightclub dancefloor in March after two cans of the drink mixed with vodka.

"Suddenly she just fell down beside me. Her heart had stopped and she was completely lifeless," her boyfriend John Andersson said.

A second Swede died after mixing Red Bull with vodka, while the third dropped dead after drinking several cans after a hard gym session.

A fourth death in Dublin last year, of 18-year-old basketballer Ross Cooney, is also thought to be linked to the drink.

"What we have is the suggestion that three people have died after drinking this substance, although there is no hard scientific evidence available as yet. We will be looking at the death certificates and going through the autopsy reports to identify whether or not there is a link," Swedish National Food Administration spokesman Anders Glyn said.

Red Bull is high in caffeine, a stimulant which raises the heart rate and blood pressure, and taurine, a building block of protein which is considered beneficial in small doses.

A study at Dublin's St James Hospital last April, following Cooney's death, found that only two cans of the drink caused some arteries to dilate so that blood pressure fell, while others stiffened and led to higher blood pressure.

While the two effects may cancel each other out, the addition of alcohol could create unpredictable effects. "If you drink a lot of Red Bull, if you are dried out, and if you mix it with alcohol, it can be very dangerous," Dr Dan Andersson of Stockholm's South Hospital, where two of the victims are believed to have died, said.

More than 900 million cans of Red Bull were sold worldwide last year, 230 million of them in Britain.

But Britain's Food Standards Agency has no plans to launch an investigation, while a spokesman for Red Bull said the drink had a safe record stretching back 14 years.

"There had been rigorous scientific testing even before the drink came on the market," he said.

Red Bull was invented by Austrian Dieterich Mateschitz, 55, who stumbled on to a health tonic in Bangkok and launched his version in 1987 with claims that it revitalises the mind and body, increases endurance, improves reaction and concentration and helps eliminate toxins from the body. He is now a billionaire.

Red Bull is still not available in Canada, trust me I tried. I found all sorts of Jolt products but no Red Bull or Irn Bru. I like Red Bull, my softball team from work gave it to me with vodka during playoffs and laughed, fun. I like super caffienated drinks. I also like vodka nearly as much as I like Rum or rye so its all good.

Red Bull is fantastic and makes you stay up later and dance harder and generally more crazy when drinking. Also vodka and coke or lime or anything is fucking horrible. Obviously drinks which taste like medicine are nice, Aftershock being another example. Only problem with Red Bull is the insomnia which ensues after vast quantities are consumed. And the nightmares, I never had evil Elton John dreams till I started drinking too much Red Bull.

Red Bull is great. Red Bull does not replace fluid like gatorade, that why it is necessary to drink additional water. Red Bull does replace energy. Also, Red Bull is not full of caffeine. It is equivalent to a small cup of filtered coffee. If you want a drink full of caffeine, drink a espresso or Mountain Dew. Lastly, Red Bull contains Glucuronolactone, which is an endogenous substance which acts as a "detoxifier". So after you get drunk, drink a Red Bull and some water and piss all the bad toxins away. Red Bull has many rumors about. Be careful on what you believe.

Red Bull is a classic, for many reasons. It is not about the taste or how is mixes with vodka -both of which I have no issues at all with. It is so because of its stimulanting effect. The caffeine plays a role, but only a synergistic one, with the other kick: the amino acid Taurine. The taurine is isolated and in its free form state, which means it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. It also gives a quick boost of carbs with glucose. It doesn't taste like candy, and it doesn't taste like cough syrup. It tastes like Red Bull. Like a true classic, it's unique. Red Bull was the first, but it is by no means the only kickin' energy drink. The other one I've had success with is Hansen's ENERGY. It actually tastes GOOD! Kind of citrusy, so if you can't deal with RB, try it. And it's American-made, where as Red Bull is Austrian. But don't over do it (3 or more), even if you are drinking, or beware the jitters- a very unpleasant state.

Red Bull has Taurine, an amino acid. Not unlike Glutamine supplements sometimes taken by weight trainers, it's one of those amino acids that does strange things with regard to energy. Anyone who's drunk a can of RB knows it has an effect unlike coffee or soda.

It's interesting that Taurine is found in a lot of cat food. Cats cannot produce Taurine. In the wild, they get their Taurine from rodent brains. Delicious. I'm hoping the kind they put in RB is not derived from that source, hopefully it's of better quality than what they put in Cat food... :P

Anyway, does anyone know the exact amount of caffiene in one can of Red Bull?

Energy Drink HUH, DUD,DUD,DUD!
Red Bull sucks, Its bad for you, It taste's terrible, it's loaded with calories (110)per can, 27g of sugar, 28g of carbs, has Sucrose and Glucose as Sweetners. And it only has 80% of your daily dose of B12. Some so called Energy Drink (DUD)
And as for XS Energy Drinks, XS has only 8 calries,0 sugar, 0 carbs, and 4900% of your daily dose of B12. Its got Ace K as a sweetner and Ace K is the sweetner that is recomended for Diabetics. It also has 300% of B6
100% of B5
100% of B3
By far a True, Safe Energy Drink!
Its amazing that most all the responses on here are talking about how messed up they got drinking Red Bull with some kind of Alcoholic Beverage. First of all Alchohol is not a stimulant its a depresent. Then your mixing a depresent(Alchohol) with a synthetic stimulant(Red Bull), your heart doesnt know whether to speed up or slow down, and when drinking multiples of these your heart could get so confused on what your trying to achieve that its very possible that it could stop. When mixed with alot of things that are not good for you. Oh did I mention Red Bull also has 280mg of sodium (salt). If your going to mix alchohol with a stimulant you might want to consider what your heart is going thru in order for you to get your BUZ! Althought most people never think of the adverse effects of anything when Drinking. XS is a WINNER!
Red Bull is a DUD.
Its just a matter of time before that more people find out about the side effects of Red Bull.
And a Final thought, dont think that Doctors are not resurching the Red Bull Product. They are! Reading these I count many negatives not many pluses. Except that everyone is getting waisted. Think about it. XS Energy Drinks do not give you a hangover when mixed with Alchohol and is actualy good for you. Respond back to me if your interested to know more about XS.

I thought it would help if people had more information on what they were discussing. Resurch it for yourself, that would be what I would do and that is what I have done. If there is any advertising going on here its advertising that Red Bull will get you waisted if you drink it and you will get angry possible, do stupid crap when drinking it with alchohol, throw up, and have huge hangovers! Great advertisement.I thing according to what I've read here that Red Bull gives you more than wings. Think about whose advertising and what it is that their advertising.

I'm intrigued by this Red Bull+vodka+Aftershock combo - I really must try it one night.

has anybody here had the surprisingly-delicious Red Bull Cola? I didn't really know what to expect, but it has basically nothing in common with Red Bull (i.e. it's not loaded with caffeine and taurine and whatever-the-fuck). a lot less sweet than Coke or Pepsi, with more of a spicy/citrusy/kinda-bitter flavor. very good mixer, too.

Gross. The first night I went out with a friend who downed these with vodka, I had to carry her home, sit all night on the bathroom floor with her and apologize to the dry cleaners the next day.

It *was* the first time she kissed me though. Not that that was worth it in the long run.
